Aside from the double top secret things I researched this last week, I enhanced the terrain editor so I would have finer control. This in turn led to hours sitting around making shapes and structure on the terrain. And that in turn led me to refactor the way line-of-sight is calculated. And that eventually landed inside the mortar, which now does its best to arc a projectile up and over terrain. And if the mortar can’t get a shot, then it doesn’t shoot. For CW1/3 aficionados, your mortar world just changed.

Those shapes look awesome! To think of the possibilities!
As for mortars, I feel like it adds value to have strategic concerns when using them. Even if those concerns are small and relatively rare. More options for map makers.
This is super cool. I would love to see caves but that might be a bit complicated. (Being able to hide layers of terrain so you can work with lower levels)
Digitals would be an interesting thing with 3D environments, allowing creeper to flow uphill just like CW3 (Unless i’m completely wrong about them doing that, but that’s what I remember)
Kind of. Digitalis growth ignores terrain. As such, the creeper that flows within can also ignore it. However, in practice, there’s still a difference between water (read: creeper) gushing out of a hole or the whole dam breaking. The creeper spreads evenly across the digitalis, so it is a very persistent obstacle, but not as much of a threat when it comes to containing, unless the mass of creeper within is truly massive, because the firepower that destroys the digitalis can slowly deal with the creeper as only the small portion of the currently destroyed digitalis leaks out at once. Unless, of course, the part destroyed disconnects a larger portion of digitalis from the rest. In that case, all of that creeper will escape once the digitalis withers and dies, which can be troublesome, but usually, the area around there would either not be claimed or appropiately defended at that point by then.
I consider Digitalis not much of an offensive threat and more as a defensive measure that slows any counterattack on the creeper. The reason for that is, while digitalis makes that area much more “resilient” against attacks, it also spreads considerably slower than just creeper by itself. (Well, all of this could be different in CW4, if there even is digitalis as we know it.)
TL:DR: Yes, digitalis growth and the creeper conducted through digitalis has ignored terrain height so far.
Throwback to CW2
:0 AMAZING! IMO I think I’ll like this mortar a lot better, so it’s not an end all range concerns like blaster has. Woot.
So cool! And i think I’ll like this mortar version better.
SLOPES!!!!!!!!
now no more teraforming huge walls then mortar over them
Well, I usually put my entire base on lvl 10 in CW3. So that was never an issue for me.
Loving the weekly updates, please keep this up! A video every couple of months and a weekly screenshot with a quick recap of your week are a great way to follow development!
Depends on wether mortars have/get a proper fire arc, height and -not forget- range.
So you could wall off, but mortars cannot be placed directly behind wall and their traget area of creeper would be very limited.
A 1-10-1 shot could mean you have to place mortar in proper position but it still can fire only at exactly one point.
But this is a design decision and balance issue.
Should a standard mortar be capable of this?
One with some upgrades or only a maxed out one?
Or will CW4 be released on 09.11.2019 to celebrate 30th anniversary of fall of Berlin Wall..? 😀
That picture makes me think of a toybox level, which might be cool with all the different shapes.
Is the terrain height now set for each corner instead of per cell? Already wondering which choices you made for the case where opposite corners have the same hieght, but not the same as the 2 other corners 😀
Yes, the terrain works off of the vertices rather than “square” cells.
Cool. Would require relays to factor 3d distances and terps to be affected by LoS to prevent breaking the balance by putting a mortar on the wall.
Can’t expect any less for such a dramatic shift into 3D.
ok well hey do you Think that you can do Coop in CW 4 or a mod andor a coop CW game thank you * onilne CW *
So the mortar is going to work with like the sprayer and blaster now? Needing line of sight to fire? Seems like a nerf to me
Needs ‘parabola’ of sight would be more accurate. It can shoot up and over many things.
