Out of curiosity, roughly how far away is the on-line map sharing when the game is released? I realise it’s hard to give rough estimates, but I’m curious if it’ll be a couple of weeks or a couple of months 🙂

    Awesome.

One thing I’d like to point out:
Unique game play featuring an enemy the flows over the map
    maybe should have been
Unique game play featuring an enemy that flows over the map

Other than that, just pure awesome, cant wait for it to be released 😀

      And filtering them by features.

For instance in CW2, hide everything that involves experimentals. Or filter by gravity/build direction.

          JF-T September 17, 2013 at 4:27 pm |

It’d be much harder to add a game where you can only move up and down more depth. CW3 i imagine is like a return to origins with the top down style of cw1 than side view style of cw2.
I bet it’d also give a more nostalgic feeling, and i don’t know of anyone who hates nostalgia and the feelings associated.

Seriously, full gameplay series unop me buying it which will be on the same day upon release!

          GET HYPED GUYS! 😀

How would it be a 3D version, where you can go up, down, left, right, forward, backwards. With pixel grafics, much like minecraft? nope, but it would be scary to see creeper flow out of a sudden hole in the ground

            1. JH
              JH September 18, 2013 at 2:03 pm |

              3d view? Probably not.

But if Virgil implemented a digging system similar to the one used in Dwarf Fortress, I could definitely see digging as a possibility while keeping the top view intact.

How about something about how this is a physics-based game (as you mentioned in one of the comments in one of the CW1 maps…something about how physics-based doesn’t have to be purely mechanics, but can also be fluid dynamics/comp sci)?

  19. GamingSatyr
    GamingSatyr September 17, 2013 at 1:36 pm |

If the creeper flow is still based on thermodynamics add that line back in from CW1. It is what got me interested enough to try to first game, and it is a very unique way to program enemy behavior.

Also, I can’t wait! Keep up the great work!

    3. Mike
      Mike September 17, 2013 at 5:20 pm |

Virgil said a few posts back that he didn’t want it to be more than $25. Though it may end up closer to $30–Which everyone ever would and should probably pay.

      1. Sander Bouwhuis
        Sander Bouwhuis September 19, 2013 at 5:40 am |

Really? Oi, I was more hoping it to be $15,- or so. Weren’t CW1 and CW2 also around that price?

$30,- for an indie game is going to be a very difficult sale. Even the immensely popular Minecraft and Terraria aren’t that expensive.

        1. McGrauniad
          McGrauniad September 19, 2013 at 1:42 pm |

Chill. While I don’t know the price, Virgil i keenly aware of what indie games sell for and he will price accordingly.

            sweetdude64 September 20, 2013 at 2:01 pm |

Yeah, Virgilw is a pro at these things. Besides, have you seen how much work has been put into this game? Also, I think it was said somewhere along the line that this game would end up on Steam, and games of all sorts of prices are on there.

          2. Spencer
            Spencer September 20, 2013 at 9:02 pm |

I agree with McGrauniad but even if he decides to put a $50 price tag I would still pay for it just because the quality of CW1 & CW2 were great, so I know CW3 will be just as good if not better 🙂

Here’s a couple of thoughts for your snappy feature list.

(though you may need to reword them/they may not be totally applicable re: actual launch features)

Share thousands of unique maps with an established, enthusiastic online community.

Fluid Dynamics ‘Physics Game’, with living, growing, spawning threats. (I’d like to see the ‘Physics Game’ aspect bigged up)

Share your scores online – compete for the number one top spot on international hi-score tables.

DMD (Dial Map Device) to generate an infinite supply of customizable and shareable maps.

Return to the Creeper World ‘Roots’ in this ‘top-down’ RTS.

Isn’t it a bit too late to put the game on Greenlight? I mean, it’s already in release state, it doesn’t need additional funding anymore.

      1. Loner
        Loner September 18, 2013 at 12:31 pm |

Greenlight is not about (or not only) about additional funding. Mainly its there to get some new games to Steam, and as a result of that available to a broad audience. (+ different payment-methods for me ;))

      2. Lanklord
        Lanklord September 18, 2013 at 2:29 pm |

Greenlight doesn’t provide any form of funding to the game. It is used to get indie titles such as this one on Steam. If anything, games in this phase are ideal for being Greenlit.

You have until the end of the month. At 7pm, on Tuesday The 1st there will be an uprising, and we will amass at your front door with torches and pitchforks.

OK, so maybe not, but don’t make us start calling in the middle of the night (waking up you and the family) asking for status updates. Do at least try to keep us in the loop.

    Sincerely,

Maybe some statistics? Like how much ‘ammo’ have we used, how many hours have we played, etc….
    Also: steamworks!
We really could use some achievements, facility of payment, cloud saves and other stuff… Of course none of this is priority and could (should) be implemented after the release…

      “cloud saves”?
just what hunk of junk are you useing for a hard drive/flash drive?
if you can’t save on your computer get a real computer, one with at least 150 GB of hard drive/flash drive space
or have you downloaded to much to be able to store a file thats less then 10 MB? (on that note, how can you have enough space to be able to even download CW3?

or is it that you just want to be able to load your save from any computer? (!!warning!!: game must be installed on the computer in order to load save file!!)

for one other thing you mentioned:
      achievements: that’s in CW1

and why do i get a feeling of you wanting to have the game involve micro-transactions?
micro-transactions will ruin the game on account of there not being any ingame items/units that would need micro-transactions and will allso drive off most of the players

      1. ~
        ~ September 18, 2013 at 10:51 am |

I really don’t see your negative approach to Cloud saves. Have you ever heard about “disk failure”? With Cloud, you can play from any computer you want without having to carry the save everywhere with you, not only that, but it can’t get accidentally deleted for any reason. It’s not the case of having a crappy HDD…

Statistics would be fun, but microtransactions/DLC probably will never be a factor.

      2. Miranda
        Miranda September 18, 2013 at 12:14 pm |

        What the hell was that?
        Where did I say micro-transaction?
I hate that crap, and I hate almost all kinds of dlcs…

Let me quote Vergil about that
” I’m old school here, but when you buy a game I think you should get hundreds and hundreds of hours of unique game play.”

I guess that means there will be no dlcs.

As for cloud saves, Steam made it so easy / cheap for devs there no reason not to use it.
Have you ever traveled? Played on a friend’s computer? Bought a notebook? I’d like to carry my progress when / if I play o different computers.

Please go shitstorm somewhere else, we were having such a nice conversation here… And bang, you appear out of nowhere putting all kinds of words in my mouth / making stupid assumptions about my computer… How silly can you be?

I expected more of this fanbase… I thought such a small group would be more united…

I know I am splitting hairs, but the stars in the above image for the different “sectors” need to have more white in the center to actually make them looking like they are shining and have an actual core. Currently they look just like bright nebulae or something. 😉

I think you may have misinterpreted a video somewhere. I think you can playtest it while you are creating/ editing it, but I am pretty sure you cannot edit it while playing it (for a real score). Otherwise someone could take a map, delete some enemies, CRPL some heavy anticreeper and breeze through it.

Yep, I was inferring that you would have to go play it again after you made all the changes. In CW2 you had to go back to the editor, save, go to the game, and load. Every time you want to make a change.

    System specs please?
How much memory (RAM, Video Card, and hard drive space) will the game need?
    What hardware?
I know it probably won’t need much RAM or Video Card (But it might since it’s pretty graphic-amazing), so I’m just worried about Hard Drive space… I have less than 10 GB of space left… I can probably uninstall a few programs to make some space.
If someone could respond telling me, that’d be great. I’ve bought at least 3 games already that I can’t play because I didn’t look close enough at the system specs, and I’d rather not have CW3 JUST BARELY out of reach (As in, installed on my computer, but un-playable because I don’t meet specs)

Other than that, great job Virgil! Take my 20 please. Keep le change.

the game will be much much less then 1GB in size if the last 2 are any indication
it will probley be under 1GB in size

I would be *really surprised* if it hits 100Meg. I would be surprised if it hits 50Meg – unless there’s a whole lot of high quality audio.

      Revising…

Hmmm. FTL is 167Meg, so maybe that ballpark.

OK: *really surprised* if it hits 200Meg. Like, *really surprised*.

I guess if you start downloading a lot/all of the maps(when they get 1000+), then maybe you can hit 500+MB but only then, else i expect the game to be no more than 150-200MB.
Actually if you download/save DMD lots of huge maps, then it will be easier to hit(in CW3 you have giga-sized maps, +crpl code, if the map has lots of different new units(actually, i think someone can make a total conversation with crpl code), then you can hit higher MBs.

Honestly, that hugely depends on how Unity builds its applications. Especially being a cross-platform compiler, it could have considerable overhead — depending on what Virgil used and what the optimizer pulls. Strict application type/complexity isn’t necessarily a good indicator of what the final size will be. This is the first time Virgil has used Unity for this game series, so unless someone from the beta chimes in, we’d really be guessing on the size.

I agree with the maps, though. They’re just instruction sets, so they’d be very small.

    3. Michionlion
      Michionlion September 19, 2013 at 11:31 am |

The current beta install folder is just over 250MB. You’ll be able to run the game if you’re on a computer with any type of graphics card, integrated or not. You might even be able to run it on a computer without one, it isn’t super graphically-intensive. I myself have an Intel HD 3000, and it runs capped at a solid 30 fps. Unless you have a seven year old computer, you should be fine.

Lol I beat it, but I wanted to cap all the emitters before trying to take back land from the creeper (I moved my base to the second emitter on the left. That plan works well ^.^ ) After 10 or 20 minutes, I capped the line of emitters, and now I have a HUGE blob of creeper covering 3/4 of the map XD

    4. Hairball
      Hairball September 18, 2013 at 9:23 pm |

I built two blasters, disarmed them so they wouldn’t fire yet, and once they were built and full ammo (just before the creeper got to my base) I moved the base and both blasters to the highest platform on the bottom that the one emitter is on (2nd one from the left). The blasters cleared the platform off and took care of the emitter and bought me some time to deal with the rest of them.

In other news, Virgil, I’m going this assuming you price CW3 at $20. If you do, I recommend a $30 or $35 price tag for the bundle. A $25 for all 3 with CW3 priced at $20 would seem a little bit low to me. But if you price CW3 at $10, try a $25 price tag for the bundle. I’m just suggesting the price. It’s all up to you!

$20 almost seems low for this game. Maybe because I’ve been following since the beginning, but there’s so much work put into it. I think $25-30 is probably a good price for a bundle – you get a small discount on CW3 and/or CW2 and get CW1 for basically free (because there isn’t much point in playing it after this, really, though that doesn’t mean I haven’t wasted dozens or hundreds of hours on it)

    Hello,

My suggestion : a huge improvement of the High Scores website page, over what he have for CW2.

On CW2, since this is flash-based, we can’t Search for text, and if we refine the search to a name (ours, to see how much better we’re ranking after beating our previous time) we shouldn’t be shown as #1 but with the actual ranking as compared to other members.

Another suggestion : directly allow users to record a video of their deeds. That’s auto-promo for the best, this way anyone would have an .mp4 (or even better, make it an .avi, it’s the only one that can easily be updated with stuff like virtualdub, haha) they can upload to youtube. This wouldn’t be a flood of creeper, this would be a flood of videos making the promotion of Creeper World 3 ! 😀

The word “unique” appears four times in the feature list (and all of them in the first half of the list). It might flow a little better if you mixed it up with things like “varied”, “different”, “individual”, “separate”, etc.

I know the feature list is currently very mutable, and you’re just tacking on people’s suggestions for now, so I’m sure you’re planning to edit the phrasing later, anyway. But I thought I should mention it.

Some thoughts on the feature list, some main aspects which I feel should be emphasised are:

    1. That the emitters can be destroyed not just capped, this might be an important distinction to people who just look at a few screen shots and think “Oh it’s just an updated CW1.” (we know it’s much more than that), since it might be one of the most wished for features of CW1, that you can eradicate the creeper threat. The statement on the feature list relating to this doesn’t need to state it explicitly, since it might be off putting to new users (making your potential customers feel excluded is rarely a good idea), it can be indicated by a more general statement that is more inclusive of people new to the CW series, whist still giving the required information to a more knowledgeable audience.

    2. I agree that the physics based element should be strongly emphasised.

    3. The strategic elements of the game should also be strongly emphasised. I notice that the word “strategy” doesn’t appear once in the feature list. Virgil might have his own ideas about how such a unique and different game should be categorised (if not given its own category), however it’s almost certain that CW3 will be categorised by some as a strategy game and it has a lot of features that will appeal to strategy game players who’s attention might be caught by the word strategy, as it’s something they look out for, and therefore capture their interest if they are scan reading a page.

I realise that a lot of this is obvious to the followers of this blog, but I am more trying to think of people with no prior knowledge of the CW series, where the decision to read further, consider the game further and perhaps ultimately buy it (and then become obsessed by it) might be marginal. For these people you might have only a few seconds to capture their attention, hence I think “physics” and “strategy” (and perhaps one or two other “tag” words) should feature in the first couple of lines and perhaps those words only should be in bold. After all the feature list could contain references to the coding of the game, how many hours it took to develop and even lies about including pink elephants, fluffy comical kittens and fashion handbags, and the followers of this blog would still buy it, or are at least interested enough to find what they want to know about it for themselves before making a purchasing decision, it’s capturing the attention and interest of the marginal viewers that counts.
(Virgil please don’t waste time now making maps with dialog or contours featuring pink elephants, kittens on washing lines, and a handbags (at least before release) 😉 , these are not important features, I was just trying to think of things opposite to the core values of the CW series.)

Some suggestions for the feature list, please feel free to modify or use any of the features in any way you wish (some things appear more than once, if necessary select the most appropriate instance):

Test out multiple different assault strategies against the insidious and relentless creeper.

Battle an insidious and relentless enemy with physics based behaviour.

Battle an insidious and relentless physics-based enemy.

Eradicate the creeper threat from hundreds of varied worlds and challenging worlds by destroying the creeper generating emitters.

Eradicate the creeper threat from worlds entirely by destroying the creeper generating emitters.

Hundreds and hundreds of hours of unique and intense strategic game play.

Hundreds and hundreds of hours of intense and unique strategy game play.
(The actual word “strategy” rather than one of its derivatives might be more important than correct grammar from a pattern recognition point of view.)

Use frontline assault combined with aerial and artillery bombardment to destroy the creeper

Use terrain modification and force fields to manipulate the creeper flow.

Test out multiple different assault strategies against the insidious and relentless creeper.

Different unit types with different abilities and effects on the creeper

    Manage energy and resources.

Create challenges and puzzles to share online.

Suggestion: A community dedicated to making and playing custom maps

C’mon, you’ve gotta say something about the community. Somebody else can word it better than me, however.

Other suggestion: Made by the greatest one-man team in the industry

That doesn’t say much since there aren’t many one-man teams in the industry, but it’s advertising and we all know ads are filled with loads of crap. It’s impressive (understatement) nonetheless that one guy made this whole game in a couple of years though. But if you count the alpha/beta testers as part of the team, then I could see you not wanting to say that.

Hey Virgil, would you consider releasing the CRPL Plugin for Notepad++ and a little CRPL documentation before the release? Or do you think it would give to much inside information away?

The future mapmakers could already learn the language and start programing. Once you release the game, people will not have the time learn CRPL, because they will be playing – at least I will.

        -1

I’m in favour of the map makers getting the documentation for CRPL, and no doubt Virgil has his development notes on it, but perhaps not in a publishable form that make sense to others.

HOWEVER considering the effort Virgil has put into the story missions, AND the alpha maps, AND the DMD maps, AND the map editor, which will come with the game on release, then it’ll be at least a month (and then some) after release before I’m DESPERATELY searching for custom maps with NEW CRPL elements. Also I suspect those that will write new code will already have worked out how to include (and probably adapt) the CRPL elements already developed and included at release, in new maps they create, which will add to the variety of new maps, without the need for new CRPL codes to be written just yet.

In short there will be more than enough in the game as released, and I’d prefer if Virgil concentrated on releasing the game for us to play and begin experimenting with map creation, rather than documentation for advanced users which can be released through an appropriate topic for CRPL programmers on the forum at a later date. I’d rather we all got the game sooner, even if it delayed the potential CRPL programmers from learning how to program because they’re too busy playing it.

    2. Jsmith45
      Jsmith45 September 24, 2013 at 8:08 am |

Actually both of those are currently available to the public if you know where to look.

Indeed, this is how (despite not being a beta tester) I know things like the fact that late in development VirgilW added support for CRPL towers to attach to the players network. which was a feature people asked about early on, and (If I recall correctly) Virgil stated that he was not planning on adding. I’m guessing he eventually found such a feature useful for some story mission, likely for creating some mission-unique structure.

That said, I will not be leaking the documentation information at this time, for the simple reason that it is (or was only a week or so ago) in pretty rough shape, and Virgil deserves the opportunity to improve it before most people see it.

CW3 is looking great, can’t wait until it comes available!

I love playing custom made maps and I download an try each and every one of CW2. So I have to play CW2 almost every day 😉

One thing I hope for in CW3:
In CW2 every new map has to be downloaded by hand and comments/ranking have to open in a browser.
I think it would be great (read: FANTASTIC) if there would be a option to automaticly download newly created (and released) maps. And, if possible, included with ranking, comments etc.
