Is there a way to sort out topics that you do not want to show as unread?
In my case I want to remove/always show as read spam threads like forum games and such.

Virgil can install a mod to SMF that will allow you to ignore select topics and boards. *But* the forum software has become a little outdated and Virgil may have to spend a fair bit of time to get it to the latest release (and to make sure autopost works with the latest release) before he can put mods on.

For now do what I do and simply don't click on those threads until the end, then select the tab "Mark all read" and  all will be dropped off the unread list.

+1, the quality of the current forum games is dramatically poor.

The problem with this solution is that it also marks all custom map comments as read (and these don't show up in the 'unread posts since last visit').

If there is a specif smf mod that will do this let me know.  I will take a look at it and see if I can integrate it.

Nope, those both have to do with permissions.

This is the one you want: http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=1193

Unfortunately it only works with SMF 2.0 and higher, while Virgil still uses version 1.1.12

There isn't *one* it is almost as if you have to install a suite.

Ignore boards: http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=137  Can install on 1.1.12

Ignore board in new posts: http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=1338  Can install on 1.1.12 and would do the work you manually did for the comment boards, I think.

Ignore topics: http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=1193  Can install on 1.1.12

Ignore user: http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=185  Can install on 1.1.12

You can then also create a separate board for "Dumb Forum Games" :)

Next suggestion. Open Random forum. Click "Mark Read".

Do whatever else you would have done on the forum. :)

This is the same I listed and it says SMF 2.0 and up only.

Yeah, when there's no option of ignoring a topic, an entire board could be an option when the forum games would be put into another board. I'd still like to read the random discussion topics every now and then.

Yep, that's what I do at the moment.

This is bizarre. That mod was written in 2008, well before SMF 2.0 was even a glimmer in the eyes of the creators. I *know* it can be installed on the 1.1.1x versions, but they seem to have recently take an approach to not support the mods on the older back-level version. I guess Virgil is SOL unless he wants to depart on the route of adding more and more manual mods to the forum. Which makes it harder to migrate off.  If this was entirely up to me, Id' tell him to get the pressing work out of the way and then spend a few days  bringing the forum up to the 2.0 level. Or just leave it as-is, indefinitely.

Maybe they want to push all users to 2.0?

Or maybe the mod was adjusted later on to support 2.0 which made it incompatible with 1.x? I know the mod version still says 1.0, but it also says there have been changes since it was released.
