Glad I didn't have to wait for all those walls to melt.

Call me new, but how do you melt the walls if not with the creeper?

Instead of an immediate answer, are there any maps that will teach this?

There is no way to destroy walls other than to
let the Creeper destroy them for you. Some map
makers use this to their advantage! So keep that
in mind.  ;)
