GoodMorning

The Walrus spoke?

x Battered Tin Box
o False Negative

No, the time has not come.

x False Negative
o Battered Tin Box

Go on... Will there ever be a better time than this?

x Battered Tin Box
o False Negative

...

I suppose not. Nobody has claimed anything hereabouts, have they?

x False Negative
o Battered Tin Box

No. Even that feed-pulse was unsigned - only harvesting relics. And wow was it strong.

x Battered Tin Box
o False Negative

Too strong by far. I don't like it.

As they continue to converse, the Battered Tin Box and the False Negative release processing drones, beginning the process of converting their subtly-collected material reserve from an amorphous mass hiding two ships, into a rather less valuable amorphous mass hiding two ships and a production rig.

Riskiest, rarest, but perhaps most critical, are the fissile cores from an ancient message.

"Weapons fire detected, not far from here," shouted the tactical officer from his terminal. "Looks like ballistic and missile-based weaponry for the most part. Fairly primitive signature."

Balcora stood up to regard the officer, throwing the data pad she was holding to the side.

"Bring up the sensor manager," the Captain ordered as she jogged to the holographic table found in the middle of the bridge. Several red pings indicated the location of the weapons fire, along with some other graphics depicting detected wreckage and active power signatures. "Can you get a read on those power signatures, are they anything recognizable?"

"Afraid not, the nearby asteroid field is causing some interference," replied the tactical officer. "Unless we can get a closer look, of course."

"I don't know if that's a good idea," Balcora frowned, glancing back and forth between the sensor manager and the tactical officer. "We really shouldn't get involved in a fight that has nothing to do with us. However, if they have such simplistic weapons, our shields should be able to deflect anything they throw at us..."

Nova had meanwhile returned to the bridge, quickly approaching the holographic table. He glanced over the data for a moment, almost bursting into laughter.

"Come on, ballistic weapons? Clearly these people can't be that advanced if they haven't even developed simple plasma weaponry," Nova chuckled. "I say we go have a look, see what's happened, and if things go south, we can always fall back here. What do you say?"

"Hmm." Balcora looked around at the other officers posted on the bridge, all of their eyes now centred on the Captain. There had been a distinct monotony to things around here whilst the construction work went on, with half the ship's personnel having little to do other than sift through data, which Balcora knew was boring as hell. At least some exploration would do them some good, she reasoned. "Fine. Get Jhanella back here too, I think she'd be up for some First Contact. Everyone else, prepare the ship for hyperspace."

A cheer echoed around the bridge, with the newly invigorated crew darting to their normal stations. Nova smirked again, catching Balcora's eye as she looked up from the sensor manager; she shook her head with a smile, beckoning over to the Captain's and Commander's chairs located in front of the viewscreen. The ship rumbled as they took their seats, the engine core thrumming to life once more. Soon enough, Queen Jhanella returned from her expedition early, clear as excited about the prospect of First Contact as the crew was, joining the flagship in formation as they flew out of the asteroid and jumped into hyperspace.

Moments later, they dropped out of hyperspace near the power signatures to greet them. The flagship led the way:

We came here because we saw material entering our universe while violating the 2nd law of thermodynamics. We sent a research team here, but since this was the only occasion we spotted this we sent a heavy escort with them, which was useful. The Hydraxil, the so called 'bad guys' were there, probably researching it themselves, because we spotted this from about the other side of the galaxy.
For ballistic or laser/plasma weaponry, which one would you use to destroy a big ship? Overheat and melt it or just throw a giant boulder at it? (Let's just say we've got a very big mortar-like gun.) Also, EMP doesn't affect common types of firearms because they are shot using mechanical force inside a simple barrel instead of electricity and complicated plasma-guns. On a side note, we managed to capture a ship here alongside three other occasions in the past. We would like to request alliance just in case things go south.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask. We can give directions to most coordinates.

"Well, they definitely seem friendly enough," Nova whispered to the Captain, eyeing up the gathered UESO ships through the viewscreen. Balcora nods in agreement, standing up to regard the UESO AI properly.

"I appreciate the offer, but we don't plan to stay very long. Once we can find a way home, we'll leave your dimension as soon as possible to preserve the entropic balance here," Balcora said firmly, speaking with great confidence. "These 'Hydraxils' you speak of, they are your enemy? We have not personally encountered any, but I am determined to keep my crew out of your conflict. I'm sure you understand."

Meanwhile, the Heteroclite Queen Jhanella was circling the UESO fleet, glancing from ship to ship with her bright cyan eye as she scanned each one. Listening in on the conversation, she decided to interject.

"Before we were created, the Humans in our galaxy used to use crude projectile weaponry... though they were effective, phasic shielding and ablative armour eventually made them obsolete... now, Human ships use plasma weapons based on Precursor technology... as for us Heteroclites, we use powerful dual plasma-laser beams as our primary weapons..." Jhanella tapped the hardened exterior lens of her eye with a tentacle. "...which we produce from our eye. However, unlike normal Heteroclites, I was enhanced with Precursor technology... which is both advantageous, and a curse..."

"And whilst we're on the subject," Balcora interrupted, a concerned expression on her face, "Our ships are built with redundant photonic plasma conduits. In other words, an EMP won't affect us that much. Might make the lights flicker a bit, but otherwise..."

"I hope that was genuine curiosity, and not a threat," Nova said suddenly, standing up beside Balcora. He turns to her and whispers, "I don't know if we should trust these guys. They say that these Hydraxils are bad, but every side in a war thinks they're the 'good guys'."

"You may be right, but let's just see what happens before jumping to conclusions. I doubt they're hostile, otherwise they would've shot at us already."

"Maybe, but don't you think it's a bit strange to talk about weaponry up front like this? That seems a bit suspect, if you ask me."

"I'll keep that in mind, don't worry." Balcora turns back to the viewscreen, clearing her throat. "Actually, perhaps we could arrange a temporary alliance whilst we're here. I'd be interested to talk to your captain in person... if he's going to be alright, that is." Balcora couldn't help but chuckle.

Alright. Checking in on the site of anomalous readings.

notify us of whatever it is you see.

yes sir. ....it seems... oh! Our friends from the UESO seem to have arrived first. Do we interfere?

No dont. If they are handling it themselves, whatever it is that happened there, we shouldn't interfere.

Noted. ...So do i leave?

if they have not seen you, i believe you can simply leave. I see that as most logical.

Alright crew, prepare the Rift engines.

Sir, that might take a while. You might want to go somewhere else so we have a lower chance of them seeing us.

...now that'll make it look shady. Lets just prepare to leave. Set the coordinates to go home.

....sir?

what is it?

One of the UESO ships turned around and saw us.

dont worry bout it. You are leaving. Leave a message saying something like 'worry not, we were here to see what were these strange readings all about. We didnt know you were here too. We are now going to leave.' ...
You got all of that?

...got it. Are the engines ready yet?

No sir! Rift Engines might take longer than expected, Sir!

ugh... fine then. We will wait.

"Seems like they're rather preoccupied. Let's just get back to the base," Nova suggested, gaining a nod from Balcora.

"Alright. Jhanella, did you hear that?"

"Loud and clear... it is for the best that we should not... tamper with their war efforts," the Heteroclite Queen said, turning to follow the flagship into hyperspace.

---------------------------------

Arriving via a warp conduit at the edge of the embattled Hiigaran fleet, Cobalt moved in immediately to provide relief. Energy beams locked between the Diamond and the Hiigaran capital ships, recharging their drained vessels. Cobalt meanwhile disconnected from the Diamond, floating over to the slightly charred exterior of the last remaining Hydraxian Citadel. It shields were still online, despite the EMP, humming gently mere meters away from the red metal hull.

"We haven't been able to crack that thing," said one of the Resource Controller pilots hovering beside the Crystallid. Cobalt reached out, his arm quickly repulsed by the vivacious energy field. A flicker of darkness pulsed throughout his body; he turned to the RC.

"I suggest you back off," Cobalt said with steely determination, prompting the craft to flee the scene quickly. In a whirl of light and dark, the Crystallid First Born evolved into his Titan Form once more. "Your shields will not stop me!"

Cobalt slammed his arms into the forcefield, causing the field to glow a brilliant blue around his fists. Arcing energy traveled up his limbs as the Crystallid pushed into the shield bubble, but he was not about to give up. Hate fueling his strength, Cobalt felt himself slip into darkness; his body blackened, crystalline horns growing from his head. He knew he had to stop himself, but it was too late. The shield fractured, shattering away into the void as Cobalt plunged his body into the forcefield, many of the shield emitters dotted throughout the Citadel's hull exploding violently due to the overload.

The Hiigaran crews watched in awe as the Titan broke the impenetrable barrier down. Several RCs moved in immediately to take advantage of the disabled shield, the one from earlier stopping near Cobalt to see if he was alright. The pulsing darkness within the Crystallid subsided, his eyes flicking over to the RC beside him.

"The barrier... is down," Cobalt said slowly, his Titan Form bleeding away into the void, returning him to his normal stature.

"Thank you, friend. Your help is appreciated," the RC pilot said, speeding off to join the others that were already lathing the exposed hull. Cobalt nodded, turning to float back to the Diamond.

"Eesh, should really stop pushing myself like that," Cobalt muttered to himself as he checked the energy beams. "As long as I don't tell Flare, everything will be alright."

Quickly enough, the capital ships were recharged enough to allow them to kickstart their own reactors, breaking their connection with the Diamond one by one. Cobalt connected up with the Diamond once more, piloting it away from the Hiigaran fleet as they reestablished themselves. Soon enough, the warp conduit was able to carry the Crystallid back to the Convergence.

As reparations continued on the Hydraxil Cooperative fleet in the shadow of the Hydraxian Citadel, a long-range transmission was received by Hythar's flagship.

Greetings, Tierra Prima. I am Hythar.

It's good to see a positive result from freeing Hysoka, sometimes freed units go a little... mad upon disconnecting from the Collective. And the fact that he has made such upgrades to that Overlord is nothing short of impressive! The Cooperative has been severely limited to only freeing older constructs with ancient ship designs. If Hysoka really wants to help the Cooperative, he could help upgrade our fleet to something much more formidable so we can better face off against the more advanced Collective vessels.

I am sending you coordinates for a hidden shipyard complex near the Mojave Expanse, where the bulk of our forces are staging currently. Hysoka, your help would be invaluable. I look forward to seeing what you can do.
