Can I create a shield key in one world, and use CRPL in another world to check if that key has been collected? Or is this something beyond my wildest dreams? :P

That is their intended purpose. You can require someone to collect a key from one map before playing another map.

Please make sure the 2nd and subsequent maps in the series inform the player what they need to do, both in the description and if possible in game, and don't just instantly fail the map with no reason why like some of the early attempts to use these do.

Double-check you're checking the correct key.

You can look at the #UnitSeries maps as an example (maps 11-28). Each map checks for a list of keys and unlocks techs when a key is found. Some story maps use the same method to unlock extra techs. One CS map used shield keys to make you replay the map multiple times, picking up a new key every time you play.

Pretty sure I'm supposed to be banned, someone might want to get on that.
