Just played through it again.
They die at 38 seconds, there' is NO saving them. Sometimes you just have to lose some assets, to protect other assets. Use the energy they create to make more Reactors before they die. With the starting Energy, and the two Red Crystals, you should be ok.

Another helpful hint is to destroy the Tech Domes at the start of the game. Remember, each Tech Dome costs 5 more than the last one. With all those useless Tech Domes another one will cost you like 100 instead of 10. It takes a LONG time to get a Beacon to illuminate those pre-made ones.
