One of the other cool things about CW3 is the overall flexibility of the map system. Your typical RTS map is rectangular, maybe with some holes punched in it. How about round? How about there being something outside the map that affects the game play? Take a look at this screenshot… see that red orb outside the circular map area? It slowly orbits the map, btw. Now look carefully at the way the creeper seems to be flowing…

This… This…
I am speechless…
This will be the greatest game ever…
lol you know it 🙂
Not only will this be the greatest game ever, it will be a fine addition to a series of the greatest games ever. Virgil needs to have a monument right next to Notch.
Can you imagine what would happen if Notch and Virgil got together on a game?!?!? 3D creeper pouring over the minecraft landscape… I just got chills……
Unfortunately, that would be difficult considering they already have the explody creeper thingies, and they cant call the amazing blue liquid “Creeper II”, that would be an insult. The blue creeper is way better than the explody creeper btw! 😀
Notch doesn’t deserve to work with this genius.
Indeed. Ever since Notch left Minecraft I’ve realized how great he is, and he is nothing compared to Virgil. You know how I know this? Creeper World is actually FUN.
Wow, that seems like a great map to play 😀 Interesting idea, hope it won’t be to hard to do this on the map editor 😀 and is this a map from the campaign? As a shield key lies around?
Maybe…. it’s a candidate map at this point.
Can’t wait for release!
I hope this doesn’t count as spoiling (because I think its easy enough to figure out from the text and picture), but…
the concept of gravity (to be precise: allocating mass to that red round object) sounds totally awesome.
I imagine mapmakers will have a lot of fun playing around with that feature alone.
I think it’s more along the lines of the Sprayer’s sucking AC back in. Seems like it would be easier to set up in a CRPL tower
Actually, I’m pretty positive that it was made using CRPL and fields. CRPL can do many, many awesome things.
That magnetar, it’s motion, and the attraction fields are all CRPL controlled. So you can trivially attach a ‘magnetar’ script to an object in a custom map and make your own.
How optimized is CRPL? Like, would I be able to loop through every tile with creeper in it every second? Or is there easier ways to set motion or something? What are the processing limits on what can be done with CRPL?
That is amazing. When I read the title and saw the thumbnail I thought maybe the creeper would be getting sucked in towards the center. What a twist! 😛
OOOOOOOOOOOOOH!!! SHINY RED ORB OF GRAVITY-NESS!!! Imagine if the orb randomly teleports, or maybe you could have several. It would be cool if it also affected stuff like bertha missiles, mortar bombs and could suck in planes, that would make maps so much more interesting. Great idea and keep the genius coming! 😀
Oooooooooo!
well.
This just made things more complicated.
me gusta.
Circular maps, and Gravity(creeper wind) changing direction…wow. Yeah, I wouldn’t mind paying $30 for this. Take your time, as long as its out before school starts.
Been thinking…
1. Can you make circular maps in DMD?
2. Can you have the orbiting plan it’s in DMD?
3. Can you program the planets using CRPL?
4. Can you have more than one planet?
5.Can you adjust the gravity and speed of the planets?
You can take any DMD map and with a button click convert it to a custom map project. Then you can do many more things with it. In this map I had a CRPL script that actually made the map circular for me (then I got rid of the script). The Magnetar is just a CRPLCore custom unit. CRPL tells it to orbit, so I (or anyone making a similar map) can easily adjust the orbit distance and rate. Want more than one, just add another one. Each can have it’s own field independent of the others.
You can adjust the fields effective distance, make them have linear rather than a constant strength based on distance, turn them on and off, reverse them, make them into a spiral pattern. All of that you can do with a single line of CRPL since I’ve added support for object based fields into the language. If none of that is good enough, you can write CRPL that controls the fields on a cell by cell basis…
Awesome.
idea: what if you created a planet on the outside of the game’s “world” and it had a decaying orbit….. take too long and it will blow up the ENTIRE planet, making you lose the game!
I believe you can destroy player buildings with CRPL, so I don’t see why you couldn’t have something that did that, or have the decaying orbit alter the map dramatically.
I think you should be able to make a moon with a decaying orbit that when it hits a certain square/radius from the center of the planet, the planet would start altering the height of the map(from a single circle/surface(depending if you are looking from outer space, or orbital), and shatter into pieces that fly in all directions). It would be even better if units can be moved with ground(like platforms).
Virgil, I haven’t even played this game, and I love it. It’s made of win.
I couldn’t agree with you more, Steel. 😀
Well, Virgil, you have outdone yourself on this game. Just have a few questions:
1. What are the Prospector missions?
2. What is Tormented Space?
3. Can CRPL Towers make packets?
4. How deep can the Creeper get?
5. How long is the storyline?
6. Is there more than one storyline?
7. Are you annoyed by my questions?
8. Does Creeper destroy units faster the deeper it is?
9. Are their fields like in CW2?
10. How much will the game cost?
1. Dial map device missions see blog post Dial Map Device
3. No?
4. Hundreds of layers
9. Sort of see creeper in the wind
10. In the latest CW3 status update, Virgil said around $20
Actually, 17gamer, Prospector Missions and Tormented Space Missions [Redacted by virgilw 🙂 ]
3. Currently, CRPL can add and remove ammo, and health from units, you could make a rudimentary packet system, however it is not intrinsically supported.
4. MAX_INT, which is slightly more than 2 Billion. (I’m not sure about this one, but in any case it is a huge number)
5. Virgil will have to answer this one, but I’m pretty sure there’ll be more than 20 missions.
9. Fields are fully supported, see Virgil’s post above this one.
Integers go up to 2,147,483,648 (2.1 billion is accurate enough for most people)
Or 2^31.
3. Of course they can, CRPL can do everything in any mission.
6.Yes, Virgil said in the last update (not this one) that in a mission you can choose between 2 story lines and leave away the main story line. I mean (e.g.) : In a mission, you’re supposed to follow X OR go to Y to take Z.
Here, if you (e.g.) follow X , you will follow another story line and the same if you go to Y to take Z
7.Not all, only those that could NOT be asked if you saw the last update.
8.No.
10. 20 bucks or less
I don’t care if there are not the ‘right’ payment-options for me – i will buy this game.
CRPL seems to be a very powerful addition to CW3, especially for mapmakers.
Keep up the good work!
Virgil… It’s been two and a half months since we were graced by your voice and shiny new features… Y u no love us? 🙁
Also the first alpha video was posted a year ago today. So… There’s that.
Don’t you want it to be a surprise when you want buy the game 🙂
Oh ha ha. People like you with your fancy-schmancy early access and your smug superiority…
Sorry. I didn’t mean to come across as arrogant. The game’s features at this point are major parts of the game and would ruin a lot of the excitement of the game if they were released.
I was considering putting a smiley at the end of that, but decided against it. I guess I should have. Why can’t foresight be 20/20 too? No, you’re not being arrogant. And you’re right. Realistically, I’d prefer to not know absolutely everything about the game, but I want it now and would like to see the: third Titan, Aether black hole weapon, mass and convert artifacts (though we all know what the latter does – I just wish it were still yellow), the full power of CRPL (though what looks like a successor to fields in this picture and J’s map from a couple weeks ago say a lot), and probably some other stuff that isn’t public.
I haven’t even seen the third titan. I know what it is but never seen it’s functionality.
Well, there’s Big Boom already, and it’s in a class of its own rather than just a scaled up Mortar. The Forge puts what Titans do in a weird position – it’s either a weapon or structure depending on how you play. I see an air unit as a possibility given the emphasis on air superiority in this game (addition of Guppies, Harvesters for a bit, and Drones getting split into Bombers and Strafers) but it’d be an AC-130 compared to the Wright Flyer manned by a guy with a musket. No, wait, Titans aren’t superweapons. P51 Mustang vs. F18? B17 maybe? But that’s be Big Boom too and that’s already there. I still want to see a scaled back Thor-like weapon return. Maybe a super-powered long range Pulse Cannon instead? But that’s something called a Mortar on a Power Zone, so probably not. A support tower perhaps? After seeing all the demands/requests/brainstorms for a freeze weapon, it made me think that Creeper World and RTSs in general are really just tower defense on a bigger, more open-ended scale. Power Zones exist and buff units already, so that’s more or less programmed in, it just needs to be modified for AoE support. But then what happens when the Power Zone unit goes on a Power Zone? Could be a third unit to use AC packets. But what would it do? There’s an AC machine gun and AC bomber, and that covers mostly everything. The Dark Beam could receive a spiritual successor in a gun that shoots a very powerful laser through a dozen or so layers across the map, but it’d need a long charge time to be balanced and that’s just a Bertha. So many possibilities and no way to guess.
From what I know Dark Beams will not be making an appearance in CW3. I think the reason for this was gameplay and I believe Virgil said it would be explained similar to why we can’t use wireless packets anymore.
Well, another (original) possibility is to be some kind of Underground unit with vast expansion of functionability or a tower that fires with “landmass” wherever you want.
No, this isn’t Terp , with this you can create a higher land even in creeper, doing a 4-5 level terrain in the selected spot, the center being higher.
That cannot be done by Terp in the middle of nowhere (I meant creeper:) )
So they can complete each other 🙂
Look closely at the “Bare Metal” video at around 4:45 you can see what the mass AoO does 😀
True, but we don’t see the animation. No animation = he just sent in some Terps and decimated it with Berthas. It’s sort of like how gravity isn’t real. We haven’t found the graviton, therefore gravity is actually wizards.
We don’t have to find the graviton for gravity to be real, graviton is needed so that we could fit gravity to the standard model and consider theories that use graviton to be real. 😛

*Location White House*
Man: “Mister President…Were F***”
President: “What do you mean?”
Man: “Virgil has designed a game that will change everything we know about technology”
President: “We need to get to the Bunker before its Too Late!!!”
*End Clip*
Nah JK LOL Virgil nice job adding a gravity field minipulation into this game i really like that in CW2 that changed how i played since it was hard to get through some places without killing the source spawners
Looooooks swweeeeetttt
Awesome.
What’s the yellow thing at 4 o’clock?
Shield Key
I assume it might be possible to program this with CPRL?
Indeed.
I must say, that moon is orbiting very close to that round platform/ pannet… Any chance it would crash?
dude are you serious?!
i knew this game is great but you…..you….. you make it too much for me
gj man keep adding this things and it will be the greatest game ever
Kept looking for a play button. :*( Anyway.. looks awesome.
Hmm, I wonder who will be the first to make a creeper-based binary calculator?
Ooooooooooooooh! This is a great idea! I already thought the best map in the previous videos was the one with the wind blowing from the top right of the map to the bottom left.
This is similar, but then dynamic.
Wow… just wow!
That’s no moon…
Bah ha ha ha… Funny. That one actually made me laugh out loud.
I don’t get it 🙁
Then what is it? A …… ball? : ))
Its a sphere full of nothing but the densest creeper… with the strongest emitter known to the universe… its just crashes… eats… then resumes…
MAKE US WHOLE!!!
Is it just me or has the percentage of bolded words in Virgil’s posts been increasing as time goes on?
Maybe it’s like a count down. The launch post is going to be solid bold, I can feel it.
Soon the emphasized words will be the ones NOT bolded.
I am so happy you actually made this map round 😀
I love the extra gravity changing features from CW2 to CW3. I assume there will be multiple gravitational surprises in campaign? 🙂
Also, I am inferring that, along with everything else the planet can do, it can also repulse the creeper rather than suck it towards it?
Finally, what would happen if deep creeper had seeped into the void? Would it be stuck on the planet? Thanks!
Yes, the planet could repulse creeper. And if creeper went into the void, it would still be sucked towards the planet, so i suppose it could be stuck there depending on how strong the attraction is.
k, so one question, but first some background:
i’ve spent the last two weeks simulating the gravitational effects in the solar system, and so here comes my question:
are you actually using Newtonian gravitation, or are you just doing something along the lines of: “yo, attract everything here!”?
and if you’re using relativistic gravity, what equations are you using?
Any ‘laws’ or ‘equations’ would all be located in the scripts, which is much different from the actual laws and/or equations. I suppose somebody could provide an explanation or a link to the script itself, but it would be too complex to explain. I would think it is just pure attraction. And Virgil- If you want attraction in this game, why not just use my face? 😉
Think of it as an explanation for the fields. It isn’t really real or meant to be realistic. Maybe the CW series is set in an alternate reality where gravity and such are a little different. Another explanation could be that the objects are things made by the creeper that purposefully distort gravity with some sort of field generator in order to make planets harder to invade.
Fields are basicly areas where something is more inclined to move one way than another. Sometimes that inclination is stronger, sometimes weaker. It all depends on the map, and the math.
I’d rather just stick with it being the “Yo attract everything here dawg!” I’m not fluent in modern chav but I’m even less fluent in computer programming and scripting! 😀
What is the blue-white thing next to that emmiter in the bottom left corner? (8 o’clock) ?
It looks to be an artifact, though I could be completely wrong and you need it to “win” the level. (It’s not a win in my book until all the creeper is dust in the wind). 😉
Or Creeper in the Wind
🙂 Nice.
Does it pull the creeper constantly, or does it just effect the way it is emitted? i’m assuming it’s the former.
Based on the text in the post, I assume it’s actually pulling the creeper towards the orbiting orb. He mentioned that the orb rotated, and in the process implied that it pulled the creeper with it
I do not believe there is an option to change the direction of the emitters production (except MAYBE crpl towers.) It is just attraction/repulsion. Other options could be added, as described above.
I assume that it is pulling the creeper constantly instead of effecting emission rates, since in the image some creeper is piled up around the opposite side of the MINI-SUN (cough cough wheeze wheeze, not moon, cough, cough, wheeze, wheeze).
That’s no moon… It’s the core of a star that went supernova but didn’t have the mass to condense into a black hole. Look up magnetar on Wikipedia; they’re amazing. Big magnets and big earthquakes.
First thing I would do is terraform those little cracks in the wall.
Clever! Earlier, I thought I would first gather AC, then terraform the land inside of the heightened terrain. I barely noticed the line was there rather than cracks being present. With this, four mortars setup at 90 degree angles to the others around the circle is how I would play the beginning. Anyone else have a strategy they would like to take a crack at? 🙂
I personally am probly gonna try a paradrop attack on an emitter, or osme sort of aggressive early on strategy, just land all i have in one place near an emmitter and take it out asap. From there I’ll terraform if i need to control the creeper more. but i probly wont use it except maybe on tough maps when I’ll need the space.
Is it possible to have other land masses on this map be unaffected by that orb? Or wold you need to add code to the creeper to make that happen?
I presume that, with enough coding, it would be possible to set the coordinates of the orbs effect to only a particular island. But seeing as I am not a beta tester, and know about as much as Jon Snow about code, I have no idea.
You need to add code to the CRPL tower to make it happen, like affecting other objects.
We know that Lich has produced more videos. Give them to us. We are getting restless again.
please?
I’d say that red ball near the edge of the Terrain is supposed to act like what causes the wind in that map.Interesting concept.
A wind that is constantly changing
Or it is a moon, orbiting a planet and causing tides…
So you’ve shown that you can dynamically define a point as the center of attraction, but can you define two different points at the same time? For example, if you had a bigger satellite rotating at a different rate or a different direction (or both!) than the one shown in the picture, would the fields correctly calculate a net force to act on the creeper, or would they both try to act on the creeper at the same time and potentially cause some sort of a glitch?
it seems that the orbiting red moon is pulling the creeper in a circle, eventually won’t this cause a swirling effect so that the planet outer surface is protected by creeper
Vergil, please stop making more nice stuff, keep something for a huge update 🙂
Just release the game, its about ready, i think , i hope, i pray for
Where to send the money?
Speaking of map shape, one thing that’s always fascinated me is having maps with different topologies, for example toroidal where X and Y coords wrap. Of course, that’s a pretty fundamental change and a ton of work to do, but it might be a way to offer new gameplay without having to add new visual/functional features.
I honestly wonder if you can build on that moon, with connections between relays establishing only within range. That knida thing would definetely add an interesting dynamic to how some missions and maps would operate. Imagine having and emitter on that, having it occasionally touching streams of digitalis, or better yet, digitalis that’d move with the moon and kinda make a creeper bridge onto whatever it touched.
Ooooh, i sense maps with moving everything in terms of ground. that’ll be the day.
i loved cw1 and 2 now i get to play 3
