I know everyone is really anxious about CW2… and so am I. It’ll be a great day when I get to release it onto the masses. So, I thought it might be time for a bit of a status update:
– Currently, the game mechanics (units, constants, techs, etc) are 99.99% complete. I may tweak a thing here and there, but they are pretty much done.
– I am working on the final two story missions currently. They have some important things for the story and for game play so they get lots of attention.
– There are currently no major or critical bugs. There are a few cosmetic issues, but nothing major. The game works, and is playable for hours and hours and hours.
– I would like to include some special post-story elements and a fancy in game high score chart… as well as some facebook posting capability. I’ll do what I can, but I may have to add some of these things after the first release…. which of course means I plan to keep the game updated with more capabilities and special missions after the initial release (just like I did with CW1).
So, I’m moving as fast as possible and putting as much TLC as I can muster into the game and its missions. I think it’s cool, a blast to play (yes, pun intended), and a worthy successor to CW1. But you guys will be the final judge… just a little longer!

I really cant wait for the full game too come out. (and i know that this probably wont happen i would actually prefer to not have facebook posting capabillitys trade for the full version of cw2) please virgil keep on making this types of games

I notice that on some of the screen-shots you’ve given us the scroll bar Seem to be different sizes, implying that the separate levels can be different sizes. is this true? Also, in the top of this one I see what looks like a nullifyer taking out a gate/portal and a spawner. Is that what it seems to be?
Yep, missions can have different heights.
And yes, a nullifier can take out multiple targets that are in range.
I can’t WAIT for Creeper World 2. I just have a couple of questions:
1. Do you have an estimated time frame? Like this month?
2. Will there be collectors?
3. What happened to the experimentals catagory!? I don’t see it in the screenshot.

You say there will be JUST reactors. Will they be affordablelike collectors (10 – 20 to build)? Or closer to how they were in CW1 (30 – 40)?

Reactors are very cheap, but you will need to build a fair number of them to get large energy production… which means you need to excavate to create real estate…

Some maps have huge amounts of ore, others not so much. It all depends on the game play that the map encourages.

Does the ship produce some energy too? It seems like if you just keep the ship above ground, you would just need a couple of bladders to protect it.
CW2 is a new and original game. It extends the story of CW1 and let you fight and use Creeper in new ways. I’ve put over a year of hard, hard work into it and squeezed all the TLC I could into it. So, there will be a price for it… but a modest one.
The right hand side of the screen is a radar that shows creeper levels, gateways, and emitters.
The ship produces some small amount of energy on its own.
Probably not. But there is often a lot of ore so unless you won’t be going afk for 1 hour it should be fine.

Yes, there will be a flash game that has some missions… very much like the training sim for cw1.
For the nullifier to work does it have to go in strait line to the target or can it go around corners?
It must have a line of sight to the target.
There are cheat engines, and please make CW2 so that none can cheat.
There are some great hackers in the beta team, and at least 10 ways to cheat have been stopped(including quite timewasting ones)

A structure to convert energy to ore would seem to be something desirable, I could see some serious potential for custom maps where you don’t get any weapons expect your own creeper (and a nullifier).
Map height, is there a a hard limit? How huge can I make a map?
I wouldn’t worry too much about random things like facebook integration right off the bat. A complete and solid game is better than random tie ins to other places. Plus with or without Facebook, you know you’ve already got our money just waiting for you 😛
Maps are limited to a max height (70 for most maps). This is a performance constraint mostly.

Marker or maker? A maker is a weapon and all weapons (makers, blasters, phantom coils, and nullifiers) are free-floating.
Nullifiers shoot in straight lines – they usually have to be no more than 3 tiles from the object (gateway, emitter) they wish to destroy. If two or more objects are near enough, then one nullifier can take them all out in one shot. (we call that a two-fer in the beta).
Have you decided on weather building on the sides and bottom of terrain will be free?

1: in cw1 you seem to like scandanavian mythology :ODIN city THor and LOKI.
2 the command ship looks a lot like the thor. is it. also THE WAIT IS KILLING ME
An undercurrent of norse mythology is still present in CW2.
The main ship isn’t a Thor… it is a new creation that the survivors of CW1 have created to take back all of the worlds they lost.
“The survivors of CW1”? Does that mean we´ll play a different city with different people in CW2? o.o

How exactly do you lose when you’re above ground? Imean, if you only had you city left you could just fly it high and it would take ages for the creeper to get there.
Drones and phantoms can rain on your parade…. and fields and push creeper up and out and make life at the surface intolerable.

In CW1 you could also keep the city floating so you could never lose, but by doing this you’ll never be able to win. The same counts for CW2 even though there you even aren’t safe when floating above the surface.

The enemy drones are like robotic zombie units that hunt down your weapons and structures. They detonate on impact. You don’t really have any weapon like this since all of you weapons are directed by the player.
No, I mean like in CW11. But the concept of enemy drones is really sweet!

Virgil, will CW2 have the same generally resource-light hardware requirements that CW does? My kid will be playing this on an old PowerMac with a pre-Intel CPU, so modern iterations of OS X are right out. He currently plays CW on that same 1.2 GHz machine, and while it is quite slow it is definitely serviceable for his needs. Besides, the slower speed from the old hardware lets him think about his strategy more. 🙂
You can expect a similar experience with CW2. Now there will be maps that push the limits of systems more than CW1, but there will be some maps that use even less CPU resources than CW1. It all depends on the map size and structure. In all cases, the game scales down to lower frame rates very well. I’ve played the game as low as 10 fps (on a 10 year old system). Like you said, there are actually some advantages to playing at this speed.
As I understand, you did alot of optimization early in the development for cw2…..

If you could take some time out of your programming of CW2 to answer some of my questions, that will be much appreciated by other people and I, Virgil.
1) To what extent are those drones bad? Are there different types of them, or should you treat them all the same and attempt to kill them? Are there friendly drones? 😛
2) You said that you are 99.99% done. About what percentage were you done at your former blog post of March 10 (The one titled “Soon…”)?
3) At the top, near the middle, there are some weird-looking things. It looks like yellow strands woven together in a double helix, both attaching to a red triangle at the top. What are those, or what can you tell us about them?
4) What are phantoms, what do they do, and are “Phantom Coils” the only way to kill them? Also, it says “Incoming Phantoms: 0:01” at the top. Is it just a coincidence that you took a screen shot right then, or did you do that on purpose for some reason?
5) There is a bar at the very right, past the scroll bar. Could you explain what information is on there? (ex.- the yellow square things, why one white bar is at the very far right, why the blue one is so high when there doesn’t look like there is that much on that map, etc.)
I would appreciate it if you could answer some- or all- of these questions. Good luck with the rest of CW2! I’m checking 3-4 times a day now!
P.S.- (I think) I’ve found a statistical reason to not make a set due date. I can live with that, which is why I’m not asking about any exact date anymore. I’ve given up on that, and I advise everyone else to do the same.

2: It’s a nonlinear scale so it is nearly worthless to talk about percentages. Think of the 99.99% as a figurative expression rather than an exact mathematical statement. The game is effectively done at this point, I just am finishing up the last two missions so I can tell the story the way I want it told. It’s time consuming, but I owe it to the fans to put lots of TLC into those last missions.
3: That’s a nullifier in the act of taking out two enemies.
4: Phantoms are like spores in CW1. Ethereal things that can drift right through solid matter. Phantom coils are the only way to stop them before they materialize. And Yes, I just happened to take the screen shot with only 1 second left before a phantom wave was launched.
5: That’s the creeper radar and it shows good and bad creeper on the map. The icons show the location (vertically) of the gateways and emitters.
I don’t think he was talking about that. There are 5 of them, they appear to be normal structures.
For your 3rd question I think you’re talking about beacons. Beacons “light up” the area so you can do stuff in it whether it is firing, building, or moving a unit the area needs to be “lit” by a beacon (you cant do anything in an area if it is not lit).
I guess we will waiting another month, for this great game.

They can all speak for themselves, but I’ve been very pleased myself with the game. I like playing it and can spend hours fighting out a mission. I really wanted to make a game that would be a good sequel to CW1… in that it was the ‘same’ yet very ‘different’. You’ll know what I mean when you play CW2. Being an indie gamer and developer I can make crazy, wild, ridiculous games like this and am not stuck making formula games just to rake in some cash. CW2 is as ridiculous a proposition for a game as CW1… perhaps even more so.

I won’t officially provide support for it, but yes if you have AIR installed on Linux you will have access to the CW2.air file when you purchase. So you should be able to run it under linux.

I have a question to the energy system.
In creeper world (1) you had starvation impacting your production. Starvation was not limited (atleast I never reached a cap).
Now, on this screen, the bar is obviously limited when going towards the negative.
Will it still work the same way? Or is there some heavy disfunction when you got to the maximum negative value for energy?
I’m just wondering if this works different now? If it’s “worse” to go negative than in the previous creeper world (it obviously is never good… but I think you get the idea)

Deficit is calculation differently in CW2. Units don’t ask for more packets if the last packet they asked for has not yet been dispatched. So the deficit is an indicator of the number of units that are being delayed.
As for the success of CW2… I’m hoping for just those results…

Question on background art:
i’m assuming you can have art that is only for the surface(like the dev. vid.), or covers the entire length(like in the space screen shot). So, could you have an image that was the size of the dev. vid. one that follows the screen as you scroll? The image would be fixed and always in the center of the game screen. this would create a cool effect for space like missions, creating an illusion of depth.
That’s exactly how the odyssey space mission works. You can take an image and mark is as “fixed” so that it doesn’t scroll up and down and you scroll the map.
In that case I’ll eagerly be awaiting the release of creeper world 2 🙂

More cores means better performance. The biggest benefit is from anything more than 1 core. I play on a quad core system and get a solid 30 fps at 1920×1200 resolution under almost all circumstance.

If it was 99.99% complete on April 4th, then it’s taken at least 2 weeks to complete .01% of the game. At that rate, you would have needed ~385 years to complete this game.

It will very likely be released in May. I have to do collateral material (like updating the web site, demo videos, etc).
Would that include improving the map search because I found it hard tO find good maps without a top rated/most Played filter.
What is the status of CW2 – demo/flash version ?
That is the other thing I have to do…. create the demo version (which should be the first 6 story missions). This probably won’t take more than a day to do, though.

I think this is just the usage of fields, like described by your post. But I’m not quite sure “why” he makes this creeper travel horizontaly, which contradicts with traditional physics. I guess he’ll have a nice story background to describe this. Maybe some of the creeper tumors will be like “creeper spitters”. Could be fun!
Oh, and the word is “Stalactites” (for those hanging downwards) and “Stalacmites” (for those going upwards) 🙂

Yes (well probably… maybe…:)) but I won’t put up pricing till the game goes live. It will be indie game priced, though. Portal 2 and Call of Duty can pull in the big bucks. The little guys have to stick to the other end of the spectrum.

Does destroying a gateway take more than destroying an emitter? In this screenshot, both are being destroyed at the same time.
They both usually take one nullifier’s output… but there can be emitters that require multiple hits before they are destroyed.
Interesting, more than one nullifier, does the emitter get weaker when hit? For example, if an emitter takes three hits to kill, and I hit it once will the emitters output be reduced?

Now, creeper world is a fantastic game. But like you added new content with Creeper World 2, you will likely add more with Creeper World 3. There might be some ideas 🙂

Knowing some (very basic) things about programming, it might be released early may if everything goes perfect, but things usually don’t, so I’d guess some time in mid to late may. Will fields be able to be moble, as in tell them to move across the map at certain intervals, or will there be sponge like fields that will soak up so much creeper, then allow any excess to just flow through (kind of like terrain did in CW1.)

The game is effectively done… just minor tweaks to the story text while I get the web site in order. I’ll be doing a blog post soon to update everyone on when to expect the launch. Barring some disaster, it will definitely be in May…. then the real work on my part will begin 🙂

Hey, virgil. Just a suggestion. One for the game, and the other – sorta…What if you created a version of CW1 @CW2 for the iPad? That would be so cool. See, CW (1 & 2) are my favorite td games (2nd fav is BTD4 Online), so I would like your games to accompany BDT4, which is already ON the iPad. It probably would take you a while, but if you keep that in mind, that would be so cool (it might not work on the iPhone cause of the screen size and all that). The other question is maybe on CW2 or even CW3 (??????? – if you make it) what if you put like a mop or sponge or something as another weapon for combatting the creeper, and then the creeper that the mop or sponge soaks up can be sucked into a big rift that the mop has to travel (or float like the drones in CW1) to, and the creeper is dumped into empty space only in THAT rift (so as not to confuse other rifts where things are entering and exiting – the biggest rift would be the “mop rift.” lol. Then, the creeper in that empty space can be transformed into additional packet supply until the creeper supply in that rift runs out – much like transforming the ore in CW2 into friendly creeper. Just a suggestion – I know this suggested change might annoy people waiting and waiting and waiting for CW2 if this is added, so if you want to do this (which would be cool), then maybe you could put it in like an update of CW2 (like you released CW1 and later added the black, red and green packet control buttons), otherwise it would look cool in CW3, whatever that might be. In my opinion, it would look cooler in CW2, but obviously because of the demand on this blog it would probably have to be in an update – again just a suggestion
Heh, btw if you do that, to make it funner and more realistic, the sponge or mop would be like a drone (like it would go out, mop the creeper, and go back to the base to dump the creeper into the big rift. Essentially, this would be cool as like a “Thor for CW2.” Obviously, then, the packet cost would be 100, and there could only be one.

Well… you know, I’ve worked on CW2 for over a year now. When things are down to being released “this month”, I get pretty excited.
Just to set expectations, do not expect the game this weekend or even next. This month, but not in the next two weeks.
So I’m guessing you have a finished game, which is not quite the same thing as a saleable product, and are working on that last bit?

how about a pvp challenge?
basically, you use dropships to attack each other. you build your blasters and economy stuff, and eventually go attack the enemy. The health might need configuring, same with damage, but it might be fun, maybe in CW3? Or a CW 2 patch later on.

CW2 is in fact finished.
And my opinion: There wont be ANY new weapons now.
First thing: The tab is full. We filled it with blaster, launcher, nullifier, maker, phantom coil and the repulsor(my best friend^^)
Good, easy to make the entries smaller to get another one in.
But the story is finished.
Last Mission is completed.
And there cant be a new weapon without a giant Story-Remake. I think all weapons should find their place in the story, like to introduce them how to use. New guys could use weapons false, even me did at beginning as I found Creeper World Training Sim on Kongregate xD Must be long time ago.
I think, Virgil will think about these ideas and maybe include them to CW3 (Idk what the story there will be, havent we destroyed the very last rests of Creeper?), but CW2 is done, Story is a sort of “closed”

Yes, the game is done. The new website is nearly done. The trailer movie is also done. The online store is nearly done as well. I just need a week to get everything completely done and in place. Then the party will start and I can get back to working on extending the game with more goodies.
Like hot keys that deactivate all units of a type?
