* Did not finish all maps.

Next weeks theme will be: computer (game) inventions.

I suggest that if next weeks tournament has the same winner (3 times in a row), the runner up (#2) can pick the theme, so themes will come from different people.

Well done KEES,

Re my score, I took the scores from the results and totalled them in excel. I am 50 points short compared to your total. How did you work that out?

Re the suggestion, excellent idea. :D

Be sure to include July 26, 2009 if you're using that theme!

As promised my solutions:

Map 1: forget about the upgrades. Just build collectors as indicated. Build a blaster and move it up. Only let it fire when needed. Simultaneously build a SAM and let it bridge (flying!) while building your last collector. Of course relays are also possible here, but 2 collectors + 1 SAM cost the same, give you energy and build faster! (Why am I not surprised Fisherck beat my time on this one? ;))

Map 2: first build 2 collectors as indicated. Then add reactor by reactor on the island. Use the last 3 spots for 2 mortars and 1 blaster.

When you clear some area below the island build a second blaster and 2 collectors. Move weapons down and add more reactors. Use the second blaster to clear space to the right. Start building the long supply line to the right totem (I could again have used 2 collectors + 1 SAM to bridge the gap, but I was lazy here ;)). Keep adding reactors and build a third blaster on the left to stop the creeper from flowing inland. Cover the mainland with collectors until you have about 10 energy. Build a bunch of blasters and cross to the left totem. Charge the middle totem with OC. I also tried starting at the right side and follow the bottom of my screen. I got exactly the same time (10:14)!

Map 3: pick up the upgrades. Cover all of the mainland by collectors (didn't do that on above screeny). Build a mortar to keep the creeper at bay. Build 6 blasters and cross to the upper totem. Build a 7th one (could have been a SAM) and bridge with OC to the last totem. Forgot to add a storage unit + 2 speed nodes on above screeny, sorry for that.

Map 4: pick up 2 upgrades. Build all collectors as indicated. Pick up 3rd upgrade (fly faster!). Build 2 blasters and move them to indicated spots. Build final collector to bottom totem. Charge 2 totems. Fly OC to connect to upper totem.

Map 5: pick up 2 upgrades. Build all collectors, but give some priority to the drone, so it finishes in time. Add a storage to connect both sides of the network. Let the drone bomb the second emitter from the top while the blasters just finish. Build a collector to the upper totem while OC flies to the bottom totem and charges it while in the air.

Im such a newb.... I just never think to bridge.... I see now how the low times are possible. I guess 13th isnt so bad......... I can only improve right?

Thanks kees.

Edit: Fixed a typo.

SPIFFEN

Bridging is an must to many maps to get an good score ,
but it's alot of work sometimes ,
spes if you have to bridge more than 1 spot =P

What exactly does bridging mean, and why use sams on a non-spore map to bridge?

Pyxis_GeeK

SAMS are cheap. 10 packets to construct I think. Bridging is using an unit "SAM" to connect to otherwise unreachable ground. In UpperKEES first picture look how the SAM is flying over creeper but it is still connected to the network.

IcEcAt

thank you UpperKEES for the insight to how you think. i guess the next round will be tighter in the scoring area

Oh okay. Sounds good. Cos blasters are like 5 more or something.

Bridging is when you span a gap between (often) two collectors by a flying unit. Sometimes you can drop it temporarily into the creeper, but I wouldn't do this with a SAM, because it can take very little damage. When you combine that flying unit with Odin City you can even bridge larger distances. In fact it's even possible to use a flying unit on both sides of OC to span a gap as wide as 3 relays (up to 32 blocks)!

SAMs cost 20 energy, which is 5 cheaper than a blaster. When I don't need the bridging unit for fighting (i.e. earlier in the game) I often use a SAM.
