I know everyone has been anxiously awaiting custom maps for CW2…. so have I. I’ve seen some amazing maps during the beta program and I believe they only just hint at what is to come. I’m in the final days before the next release, so we are very close.
I’ve been hard at work on the approval system for maps and this time around I have a more community oriented system in mind. The new map approval system allows me to designate ”map moderators” who will have access to maps as the community uploads them. These moderators get to vote on these maps and over the course of a day the map will be approved or rejected based (in part or in whole) on the votes of the map moderators.
Initially I will be accepting a limited number of map moderators. The system will be new and I’ll have to limit access to around 10 people or so. But, if the system works out over time, I should be able to expand to a larger collection of people.
To even be eligible for becoming a map moderator, you have to have a forum account. Everything is tied to your forum account. I will initially be looking for people who have had forum accounts for a while and have been active and productive in the community. Don’t send me mail or anything… I will be hand picking the initial set of moderators. Over time, I will be looking to the forums for more moderators. So if you think you might be interested down the road, become a forum member and build up a good record of participation.
My hope is that this system will provide a neat system for approving maps and provide for community participation in the approval process. Both, I think, would be good things.
So, just to give you another idea of what might be coming with custom maps, here’s a little screen shot (map courtesy of MadMag). You can see a custom background image, custom creeper colors, custom tiles, and creative use of fields to create that little helicopter that flies around.

Absolutely not. We intend to accept the vast majority of community maps. See this as a guideline.
If a 10-yo old kid looks at the map, there should not be anything on the map that his mother will be unhappy about.
In some cases, the odd 4-letter word will be acceptable, but in general bad language and bad images will be the major cause for rejection.

I doubt it will be required to be hard, or even great to be put up. However, I imagine it will be required to at least be appropriate (whatever that means) and not copied from someone else. I personally will be making a simple *up-fighting* map initially, just to see how it works, since that blog post with it an an example, yet none of them were found in the campaign. Not complaining ofc, but I really want to try one.

I agree with you on the up fighting. I just now it will probably be betas that are mods like KEES and Kith. Just some people might be just bad about the maps.
im guessing that all maps submitted will be allowed except those who are not appropriate, and if u cant figure out what that means, it means that it cant have sexual stuff in it.

I wonder if the *helicopter* will drop *bombs* at certain locations. That would be simple to do I imagine.
The Smart cars and the crossbeam antenna foundation is actually custom tiles.

“Days”, as everyone (should) know(s), can mean an arbitrary number of days from 2 days, to infinity days. So technically, your complaint is invalid. However, “days” is usually used to refer to some amount of time between 2 days and maybe 7 days. So I suppose that always saying it will be released “when it’s done” is the best move, so people stop getting their hopes up, and dont start planning, getting disappointed, etc.

the actual map used in the picture here is quite difficult. once you can get your foothold in quickly its actually quite easy. as long as you don’t screw up. so save often is my advice.
