I always forget that you HAVE TO get the stupid mortar that you really have no use for.  What had been a good map until then suddenly got annoying. >:(

Heh heh, I had the same experience.  I noticed it in the beginning, thought "wonder if I need that?", then "well, let's see what happens".  After controlling all of the Emitters and connecting the Totems, I saw that yes I did need to retrieve the Mortar tech, so I spent another few minutes arranging a careful flood of that area.
