Recall Range - What is it?

For Emitters there is a property called "recall range", but I have been unsuccessful in extrapolating what that means.  Anyone have any insight into this?

When Emitters are attacked, some particles are recalled for defence. Is this related to that?

I think so, I can't seem to change it from 25 though.
