I never used any shields. For me the secret was:

1. Insane energy management at the beginning, like setting the Dark Beam to "disconnect" while it's still on and letting it go down to 5 energy while you get crystals.
2. Identifying the limiting (hard to get) emitters and using your precious energy to kill them ASAP. Those are the ones to the left of the middle zone.
Had a LOT of saves and mistakes causing the DB to poop out.

Wow, much more complicated solutions than I'd used (/intended?) but fun to see that other people have totally different approaches - i know I'm the author (=biased) but i do quite like this level!

I never used any shields.

But you should use them for a decent score.   :P
