The only problem I have with this map: You absolutely don't know what each ship is capable of.

So here's a short list:

Maggie - Lathe
Tool - Grabber
Billy the Kid - Stunner defense
Barney - Very short range defense (12 laser)
Gunner - Cannons and lasers
Stonebanks - ~Shielded hammer
YinYang - Carrier + Tanker
XP2112 - Tanker with some defense
Church - MK7 + many lasers
Christmas - Rockets

Just build them all, smallest first. This is definitely a good strategy and could never go wrong. I am sure.
