The first wave of spores took out half my network before I could do anything.

You definitely need to think through your initial building priorities. Don't just automatically accept what is in front of you.

CW almost always breaks down to "PDA":
Power - Build toward your eventual power requirements
Defense - If you can't defend what you've built, you're toast
Attack - L'audace,  l'audace, toujours de l'audace! When you have the power and weapons you need, focus on your attack point and charge.
