CW on Windows through VirtualBox

I'm a Linux user who has several versions of Windows running through VirtualBox.

VirtualBox is a virtualization system that lets you run other operating systems in a window on your native operating system. Running Windows XP and Windows 7, I can run CW and CW2 with absolutely no problems.

CW3, however, has never worked for me. It crashes with that message telling me that it'd be great if I sent the output crash file to the developer.

I've gone through all the settings I can think of, and I tried reinstalling the CW3 from the redownload page. I also tried installing it to C:\CW3\ instead of under C:\Program Files\ and there's never a change.

I'd like to get CW3 working but am uncertain what to do at this point. Does anyone have any ideas?

Well, first question: Did you then send the output of the crash file to the developer? :)

It's most likely a graphics issue. What can you tell us of your graphics setup under VirtualBox and what other games are you successfully running in a similar configuration?

I didn't send the output but can if Virgil wants it. It wasn't helpful, actually. It just said that "write to location 00000000 caused an access violation" which doesn't seem very helpful.

I think you're right that it is a graphics issue. I enabled 3D support in VirtualBox and installed the necessary drivers and then I got further, and a different kind of crash error message. It's aggravating and I think VirtualBox just needs better 3D support. Until then I guess I'm stuck playing CW and CW2. As for other games: I've never played other games like this on VirtualBox since any other games I've played are either flash or native Linux games. CW is the only game I've ever had to use Windows to play and it was worth going through the trouble because I love those games. I expect CW3 is equally amazing and am looking forward to it. Maybe a native Linux port is in the future. I think I might eventually try to get it working with Wine.

This looks to me like it was trying to make a file or write to a file in a part of the computer that required administrator privilages.
