experimental weapons problem

i can't get experimental weapons to appear in the map.
bit of an issue as i'm trying to do a experimental only mission.
so far i've tried just having the experimental weapons tech boxes ticked... fail
and having tech pickups available... fail
not ticking the techs and having the tech pick ups... fail
i don't want to have the weapons available straight away (i want the player to hold of creeper with repulsors and mine for the tech) but that also fails
i updated today 03/01/2012
can anyone help?

In the general tab you have to tick the "Show experimental Tab"
