what exactly determines the score? this seems like it should be covered somewhere but i can't find it.

is it purely time to complete the level? does the amount of energy/damage/starvation/build-up have anything to do with it?

The score is only time based , not what you build .
So you need to build the right things in the right time do finnish the maps as fast as possible .
