Build some collectors, pulse cannons and start building reactors. One or two mortars is good too.
After energy production is good enough, build forge and ore mine/sprayer to help defending.

What exactly do those units od? I saw them all count down to zero, but nothing happened after that.

These units take creeper under these sometimes and store it (Numbers grow), but effect wasn't that visible.

When player attacks these, creeper is slowly released and numbers decrease.

These are intended to make nullifying harder by destroying nullifier before it builds. AC is pretty effective protection.
