So Mr. Cavemaniac, I hope you've downloaded V1.73 (1.72 was very buggy). In it you'll see that the Colonial Space list page now has a little "Sort order" column.

The last entry on that is "Random". What you get with that hopefully addresses your request to have a random map presented to the player so maps don't disappear down the long list of sequentially-presented maps.  YOU can also do a few other things with that list that will hopefully address as-yet not mentioned requirements. :)

I came late to the original Creeper World and there were already thousands of custom maps to choose from - far too many to wade through one at a time.

Having the random map suggestion was awesome as it suggested old maps that I otherwise would never have seen.

Now if only I could get time to play games...

Yeah, was wondering whether that was always there before or whether it was just something new cos I only noticed it recently-ish.
