Title: Tutorial Forum
Post by: cquante on March 14, 2010, 03:56:12 AM
I'm an average player.  I know what I like to do to try beating a map.  The hard and above maps are tough for me.  I think it would be great to have a special forum just for specific map tutorial requests, and for general map video tutorials.

I know there are even some medium maps that I would swear are unbeatable.  But the scores don't lie.  Maybe the more experienced among us can share their knowledge.

I've even made some custom maps.  When I play them through as an author, I'm amazed at how much faster others seem to be able to complete them.  It would definitely help me make better maps if I was able to learn some of the finer points.

Thanks!

Yeah, that might be a good idea to keep everything conveniently organized. I would certainly help (you) out.

Much assistance has been provided in the Gameplay and Custom Maps forums. Ask and you shall receive. Creating another forum will overlap with those two.

The problem with those two forums is that you have to dig through things like "stolen music", "epic win", etc to find the tuts.  I'm not looking for help with any particular map, or I would post for help with it.  I was thinking of a repository of nothing but tuts in one easy to find place.  The fact that tuts and vids are being posted in both forums indicates to me that there is no clear place to post that information.

When such a board/subforum would be created, existing threads could be moved.

So what would need to be done to get something like this going?

Approval of people who make the decisions (that is: Virgil and the moderators).

Besides that they also need to have the time and energy to do this, so don't count on it as they are in starvation mode. People tend to want too much at the same time.... ;)

Well, if somebody has the time and would be so kind to make a poll, I would certainly appreciate it.

Edit: Oh, that was quick, didn't see it. Thanks! :)

Just to let you guys know this will be a temporary sticky. After the results are in and Virgil decides or not then this will become locked and unstickied.

Step 1: Start the game
Step 2: Click "Missions"
Step 3: Click Hope.
Step 4: Do the tutorial.

This game is extremely easy, we do not need a tutorial forum.

I don't even have to TRY to beat the maps...

easy to learn, hard to master.

He isn`t talking about just beating the maps, he is talking about beating them fast.

I think its ment to be made an main thread , not an new forum for this .
So if im right , im all for it .
It would / should make the forum cleaner ,
so it gets more easy to find help for the things you need help for .

I'm not sure if you're kidding (don't see smileys), but obviously a lot of people need help with certain maps. By the way, where is your name in the high score tables? ;)

Have you even read the posts in this topic? It's clearly about a new subforum (a board part of this forum) to keep things organized and make it easy for newbies to find what they're looking for.

Edit: I'm not sure if you understand, but a thread is the same as a topic.
Title: Re: Tutorial Forum
Post by: SPIFFEN on March 15, 2010, 10:59:40 AM
But wouldnt an new main thread be better than an extra/sub forum ,
most players wouldnt even log in to another forum .

Everything should be in the same forum ,
but have main threads/topics that clearly show what your looking for .

I think that an submainthread is better than an subforum .

But i might have another thought of what an forum is ,
and what an thread is .
So im sorry if it's hard to understand what i try to say .
And for sure , i have'nt done an good job to say what i really mean .

No worries, it's just a misunderstanding.

With a new forum we mean another board (in the Knuckle Cracker forums), like Announcements, Gameplay Discussion, Suggestions and Support, so there's no need to login to another forum.

Yeah but still... the game is easy. If I wanted the top scores I would, but I prefer beating the level in a fun way, not a stressful race to be the best nerd.

The game is indeed easy to understand, but that doesn't make every map easy to play. That's the power of Creeper World and the secret to every successful game.

Like most things fun is relative. Some people have fun capping emitters, some like to make to whole map green and some like to beat the fastest time.

I like all these kinds of fun, but I just love a competitive element. If that makes me a nerd, then at least I'm a fun loving nerd. ;)

And hey, you don't have to use the tutorials....

Hey Virgil, what is your opinion on this?
Title: Re: Tutorial Forum
Post by: knucracker on April 22, 2010, 10:38:52 AM
Well I have no real objections to a tutorial board in theory...

Honestly, I'm just not real thrilled about hunting down all of the existing threads that should be in the new tutorial board and moving them.  There are a number of threads that should probably definitely move if I create this board.

Also, the new board would have to be policed to contain only tutorials... not commentary on if the game is good or bad, etc.  So I would envision that this board would not have a lot of chatter and back and forth.... it is only tutorials.

Lastly, would there be any relationship between this board and stuff on the wiki?

These are the things that have kept me from just letting it rip and creating a new board.
Title: Re: Tutorial Forum
Post by: TheBuilder on April 22, 2010, 12:30:29 PM
Why not make the board and have the community hunt down the tutorials?
And Kamron3 is preaty quick when it comes to making sure topics stay on track, though he's not the only mod that would probably watch said hypothetical forum like a hawk.

But in the end its your decision, so umm, laters. :)

For very hard (custom) maps a tutorial board is handy.
Look at his topic: RoccoL 18 |E-M?| 5m | Tutorial (http://knucklecracker.com/forums/index.php?topic=984.0)
Title: Re: Tutorial Forum

Not only for custom maps. Most people visiting the forums for the first time are looking for a solution how to solve an in-game map. Look at the most popular topics by views (http://knucklecracker.com/forums/index.php?action=stats) and you know what I mean.

Give me mod rights for one day and I'll do it. I guess I would only have to go through the Gameplay (171), Custom Maps (201) and Support (182) boards, so a total of 554 topics. I just won't be able to do it within the next 10 days, as I have an exam next week.

I think there should be ONE topic per PLANET in the Tutorial -> Creeper World Mission Maps

These posts should contain a few screenshots and instructions.

What we want: Fastest way possible to beat the map
What we don't want: Any way to beat a map besides above

Yeah, that would really generate some nice competition, as we've seen before for a few of the story and special OPS maps.

I've been playing for a while, and am starting to absorb a few of the fast-play concepts, but it took me a lot of research & forum-shopping to find, for example, the dual-flying (weapon & city, "tutorial bridging2" - thanks, HI) technique. It seems to me a collection of those ideas, and some general examples, such as the Tucana (two-mortars-control-the-creeper-expansion) concept would help the less experienced get more comfortable with the tougher maps.

In addition, I can't yet understand how some of the conquest and special ops maps can be done as quickly as the posted data. If a few of the "magic" techniques were explained, I'd I'd be happy to try to extrapolate them to others - I don't want the perfect solution to everything, just some hints.

If there was one place we could look for such, it might reduce the blather in other forum topics as well.

If you can beat hi's maps (http://knucklecracker.com/creeperworld/viewmaps.php?page=&author=hi&search=&duration=0), you have every tool you need to get those scores. It's just a question of how many blasters you need to contain the emitters long enough to reach the totems. For example, in Gump, you use 3 blasters for the ideal score.
