How do you even survive the first 5 minutes?

Land on the spot next to the resource terrain. Miners are an absolute priority in the start. Though that doesn't mean you should build a ton of mines right away, build a few. You'll also need a few cannons around the resource terrain so that creeper doesn't flow into the resource terrain and end you. You just have to balance between building miners and defenses.
