Not sure what the key shield thing was supposed to achieve. Maybe replayability, but I am not interested enough in replaying stuff in general to really try these out.

As noted in the opening dialogue, the sequence of the keys determines the Emitter you end up with.
Does not appear to have anything to do with "replayability".
