Title: Hardest Map?
Post by: katanna on May 11, 2010, 03:04:14 AM
In your opinion, which included map is the hardest?  Custom map?  (Remember that hard != it takes a long time to beat!)

For me, the hardest included map is ChopRaider.  The custom map that had the best combination of hard and fun for me was Volcano Invasion (http://knucklecracker.com/creeperworld/mapcomments.php?id=1814&page=).

Pyxis for story, For special ops it was Gump, the conquests were easy enough, cept one time i wanted this speed tactic to work...

Story: Tucana
Conquest: Frigg 3 (by far)
Special OPS: Gump (especially on Double Down; I had to ask for help here)
Custom: many, but the first one that really gave me trouble at that time was Devil's Den by Apocalypstic (http://knucklecracker.com/creeperworld/mapcomments.php?old=1&id=7). In the meanwhile I've learned a lot, so I'm able to solve even harder maps with less effort. I've probably created harder maps myself in the past months. Some maps are hard because you have to solve a puzzle, some are hard because you've got little space to build, some because you have to use tricks like bridging and others because you have a time limit, so it depends on your style of play what you consider hard.

About maps with massive early spore waves: I love them, as there is an easy way to preserve (almost) all pre-built structures. ;)

Edit: The map that probably frustrated me most was Stairsteps to Death by Kamron3 (http://knucklecracker.com/creeperworld/mapcomments.php?id=62). After numerous restarts I finally found my way, but then I got slaughtered by a massive spore wave after 22 minutes. I just couldn't accept that a map existed that I couldn't beat, so I tried again 3 weeks later.... :P

Edit 2: Another great hard map that came to mind and deserves to be mentioned is Living Off The Land by Bort (http://knucklecracker.com/creeperworld/mapcomments.php?id=909). This design must have cost him days! (And you only realize this once you're able to finish it.)

Story: Octan (energy problems)

Custom: see here (http://knucklecracker.com/forums/index.php?topic=3078.0) (we must complete the best map first)

Tuncana in story mode

I'd have to go:

Story: Ix
-I had to learn about energy conservation in building the hard way. Never failed on Tucana, it just took forever. Actually found Pyxis rather easy.

Conquest: Frigg 3
-Let's say you move to the higher ground just left of where you start. You still have to contend with the wall of creeper that advances once the basins to the left, top-left, and immediately above you quickly fill.

Special Ops: Gump
-Absolutely. If you don't realize you have to keep Odin constantly flying, you can't really beat it (Super Tax-Man and ChopRaider gave me headaches though).

Custom Map: Alien Altar Ruin
-It was the first custom map I downloaded and I still can't beat it.

You only have to fly OC in Gump on DD mode. In normal mode you can win without flying Gump.

Story: Tucana - Move to the bottom or have good energy management and make two mortars. I couldn't figure it out by myself at first.

Conquest: Nothing really, yet. I have not gotten to Frigg yet.

Custom: Living off the Land. I honestly don't even know how to get started.

No argument from me, The Great Plains takes a lot of time because you are stuck waiting an hour for the wall to dissolve.  I was just using their metric.

Finally had the chance to play Alien Alter Ruin by Sauffaus (http://knucklecracker.com/creeperworld/mapcomments.php?id=557) and this is definitely one of the hardest maps I've ever played. It's a very tough puzzle and the map looks super cool. I can recommend it to anyone up for a real challenge.
