I don't know about hard. The map is pretty straight forward, either you get your defenses set before the wall breaks or you lose. Without reactors the only danger is taking your sweet time.

I think you found the secret. Move the city near the center, link to some upgrades, build two lines of collectors to the Rift totems (and a blaster at the end of each one), and other line to collect artifacts
