Hi,
is it a common problem that in Colonial Space the map list does not load, almost two out of three times I see "Retrieving Map List From Server..." for more than five minutes. I'm pretty sure that the connectivity on my side is ok, so I'd like to know if that is a known problem and I have to deal with it or if there's something I can do.
As a side effect, this behavior made me start to design my own maps... So, tell me how to solve the issue or I'll upload more maps ;D
Greetings from The Shire!
It is definitely NOT a common issue or you would have seen more posts about that on the support forum (where this post of your will soon be. :) )
I suggest you look at tools such as TRACERT (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/314868/how-to-use-tracert-to-troubleshoot-tcp-ip-problems-in-windows) or pingdom (https://tools.pingdom.com/). to see if you can spot connectivity issues from your location.
Okay, I see - do you (or anybody else) have the IP or name of the map server?
Greetings from The Shire
PS: And thanks for moving to support!
The map server is on knucklecracker.com and the IP address resolves to 72.14.178.233
Edit: I was sitting here wondering why you needed the IP address, since you don't. TRACERT can work like this
TRACERT knucklecracker.com
You're right... sorry!
However, tracert and ping, both tell me 147ms (with 7 hops) while I don't see any maps. Once I see the list I do never get any further notable delays, so download a map works always.
I waited for about five minutes and - tata - the list is there.
However, I'm off for the weekend and will be back online on Tuesday.
Thanks for your help!
Greetings from The Shire!
btw: Haven't we met already in GemCraft discussions... ?

The GCL in your name completely escaped me. Until you reminded me. :)
Both Virgil and I are great fans of Gameinabottle and the Gemcraft franchise. I love playing gemcraft.
Do you happen to have a really slow network connection? The metadata about the maps in colonial space is about 0.5MB large. That's a small amount of time to download if you have a 200mbps connection and considerably longer if you have a 56kbps connection. The data is also compressed, so if you have a really slow machine than can add to the time.
I had similar issues with PF for a while and the fault was on my ISP's side - packets were getting lost. So instead of tracert, try running a ping for 5 minutes and see if all the pings return to you:
ping -t knucklecracker.com
You stop with Ctrl+C.
OK, back from the weekend, right now everything is fine but I'll try the ping -t thing if the error shows up again!
@virgilw : I think with 50 mbps I should be on the safe side ;)
1/2 OT - is there already any GC-like CW-map? If no, I'll ask Peter (GiaB) if he's fine with using his arts on a map, fighting the forgotten with some berthas would be great...
Okay, it's back :(
While waiting for the maps to show, I performed the ping -t and from 589 packets only 3 were lost in the void, so right now I don't have any idea where my problem is...

Next time you experience this, upload the log file> http://knucklecracker.com/forums/index.php?topic=16476.0
I'm not hopeful, but perhaps there may be a message in it.
Also, it may (very remotely) be an issue with your hard drive. Run a SMART check on your drive - use something like Speccy or CrystalDiskInfo - however, something just doesn't look right on the crystalDisk page, so I would exercise caution if you go there.
Thanks for pointing to the log-fiel, this might be a hint:

HandleD3DDeviceLost: still lost

I play on a Dell XPS15, i7, 960m, SSD (and yes, I checked it and it's fine)...

That is an issue with the Video Card.
Which Card do you have in your system? [Nvidia or Ati-Amd]
And are you running Windows 10?
Yes, obviously it is a problem with the direct 3d driver, but maybe it might be the reason for the other problems. At least it is the only error occurring in the log and I don't have any problems with the graphics :/
Yes, I run win 10, the steam version, and my graphic card is the Nvidia 960m
Have you tried reinstalling the Video & DirectX Drivers?
Sometimes the Launch Options have a good effect. [Helped me with Cities Skylines when it wouldn't start up.]
