You can markedly reduce build time by removing the internal non-armour. Also, shields inward, ports outward, fewer particle beams, and generally try to trim what you can afford to.

Well then, that's a bit of an overcompensation. I know GM said to trim what you can afford to... but I don't think he meant trim everything but the bridge and engines. XD

I agree with Decagon. Your ship had potential, it's just that removing even one square of hull can significantly reduce build time for a ship of that size. And shuffling the ports a little makes their range that much greater, whereas shields can be just as effective bunched up around the CM.
