Interestingly, I didn't find it that hard. Energy production was a problem for a long time.

Breaking through the digitalis/runner ring isn't that hard once you remember to set a few cannons to target digitalis. As soon as you reach one of the edges it is really easy (and a bit tedious) to take the rest of the map.

But it's a good map because the usual strategies aren't very effective.

Yeah, energy limits you for a long time.  I didn't find the outer ring to be the key to defeating it, once I started taking the PZs of the runner ring the creeper ceased to put up much of a threat, it was easy enough to walk over what was left.  Nullifiers there will take out the third ring and then mortars on them will keep the outer ring in check.  With no creeper sources left it's easy to clear the islands, the spores go down and their PZs take out two emitters of the outer ring each.

This one makes for a great fight.
I didn't have a save to go back to, so kept on playing after getting wiped out a couple of times.
I will come back and give it another go.
