Did you notice that:

The forge is preloaded with 1000 aether?

Take advantage of that, and you should be able to build adequate defenses before the creeper finishes dissolving the walls.

I didn't notice that but beat it anyway, albeit with an atrocious time. It was touch and go for a while, my cannons were barely keeping the creep from touching them while I built up my power.
