Uh, am I missing something or are the ore spots on the edges of the map supposed to be un-acquirable due to them being out on the void  :-\

A fair number of PH's maps contain inaccessible ore deposits. They're mostly there for esthetic purposes. In some cases they also hide the true size of the island underneath.
