Title: Problem with downloading maps and no log file.
Post by: GrimFandango on November 12, 2014, 07:13:30 AM
Hi,
i have the pc version of CW3 (not steam).
Since yesterday i am not able to download any custome maps in "Colonial Space".
Every time i try, the download-button reappears instead of the play-button.
I tried to see in the log file but i was not able to find it.
There is no log file in "c:\Users\YOUR_USER\AppData\Roaming\CreeperWorld3\".
And the folder "c:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Creeper World 3\CW3_Data\" does not exists.

What can i do?

Failure to download maps means a network issue, or a file write issue.  First thing is just do a full reboot and see if that helps.  Then verify that the game starts and run fine other than the download of custom maps.

c:\Users\YOUR_USER\AppData\Roaming\CreeperWorld3\log.txt is where the log file lives for non-steam versions of the game on Windows Vista and later.  If you are running windows XP you can go to "%appdata%\creeperworld3" to get he directory (that works on all versions of windows actually)./

Thanks for the answer.
But it didn't help.
- A clean reboot did not change the behavior.
- I can start the game and play any map if it is already downloaded.
- The game also saved the result of finishing a map.
- The folder c:\Users\YOUR_USER\AppData\Roaming\CreeperWorld3\ exists. (Windows 7)
But there are only these 3 files:
  GameSettings.xml
  InputManager.xml
  keydata.dat
Always. While running the game and after closing it.

Do i have to activate the logging?
Can the logging be deactivated or redirected to an other folder?

Just to check: are your game settings saved between sessions?
(change the creeper color, restart the game and check if it is still the same)

Yes the creeper color is saved.
After restarting the game the color is still changed. (red -> blue / restart / blue)

A few more things to note/try:

1: Custom maps are stored here:  c:\Users\YOURUSER\Documents\creeperworld3\colonialspace.  Look at that dir and make sure you can read and write to it from the user you are logged in as.

2: Right click the game's icon on your desktop and choose "Run as Administrator" and see if that makes a difference.  If so, there's a permissions problem somewhere.

3: Did anything change on your system or with your network since yesterday?  Updates, new users, crash, etc.?

1. The folder is editable. And i have all rights to change it.
2. No "As Administrator" did not change anything.
3. I installet Avira Antivir 2 or 3 days ago. But i was able to download maps after that.
Only a day later i wasn't able to download maps anymore.
And any other programm that uses the internet works fine.

I'll bet avira has locked apps from accessing the internet... possibly even added a firewall rule.  It might have done this after a nightly full scan or something like that.  CW3 hits this URL (as an example) to download maps:
http://knucklecracker.com/creeperworld3/queryMaps.php?mapid=1345

I bet you can download maps just fine with chrome, ie, firefox, safari... but CW3 won't be allowed.  Check the AV settings to see if it has a white list for apps that are allowed internet access and also check your windows firewall rules...

This page might help with the avira configuration:

Thanks.
It's working again.
But i had to deinstall avira completely to do this.
Only setting off the avira scanner and the windows firewall didn't help.
I didn't know that avira actively blocks websites or URLs in general at all.

Thank You.

Send them a support email...
They should be able to either tell you how to disable it, or explain why it is blocking the game in the first place.

As a personal opinion, I don't know why you'd want to install Avira in the first place. In Windows 7 - Microsoft Security Essentials is pretty awesome and free to boot. In Windows 8 - Microsoft provides a built-in antivirus by default.
