I figured out, just completely ignore the runners and choose to avoid them. Nullify only the towers on the peninsula so you can get access down the line to the island with the emitter.
I was thinking it had to be something like that.

I went into 'bug attack mode' on my first try and massive Creeper wiped out everything I had.

Yep, Pastor.Healer likes bugs with LOTS of juice in 'em! ;D I've learned to pop them only at my own peril.

I changed my Creeper color (colour) to bright red and it was like swatting a giant mosquito that had just finishing filling up.

It's possible to take the bugs on directly. A line of cannons with an upgrade kept the creeper at bay.
What a brutal start to the game! I loved this map. 9/10

I'm guessing the very low scores flew terps over and landed a CN right beside the nullifier. Not sure how to get plenty of power over there, but it might be enough to have some loaded weapons from the big island.
