OK, I'm a doofus. I have never been able to make fields work in a map.
Not even the most simple field. ALl I want is to have a hollow in the ground, with a field (straight line) that prevents the creeper from escaping until I switch the field off. I've read the thread about fields and hte editor manual, but I can't figure it out.
When I run my map, the field blinks off in a few milliseconds. My first guess is that I"m calculating the time wrong.
Maybe the picture will explain it.

You have to put the 9000 frames (= 5 minutes) in the Initial Delay input field. That is the the time before the first action happens. The End Delay of an action is the time till the next action, so that will only matter if you add a second action.
