Title: CW 3:what do you think of the map?
Post by: ashtoin on September 25, 2012, 11:47:02 PM
so what do you think of the mapping process(lol)(level mapping btw)

i myself think its gonna be a bit complicated, although since in a way you get unlimited saves.....

Complicated but worth it. The later a game in a series is, the more it has to live up to. And at this rate, mapwork is set to look like the primary new deal with CW3.

Even more given the advent of digitalis.

Creating the maps is probably the bulk of the things left to do before release. (Based on the last video).
Balancing will come with that and will have to be done for each map (at least the story maps) individually.

I'm not entirely sure if that's what you were talking about, though.

I think the new CW3 map editor will be very functional and practical for the User. (just look at the difference between CW1 map editor and CW2 map editor.) I really really hope I have an option to simulate the creep (and digitalis) Emitters produce without launching the file in my CW client.

CW2's editor gave you that capability, so it's likely that CW3's will have it as well.

I never got it to simulate how much creeper the actual emitter would produce.

Maybe I never just figured it out.  :P

I don't think that map creation is the only thing left... If it was, we'd have been done a long time ago.

Well yea I think there is plenty more things left for Virgil to do besides the map editor but I'm just giving a suggestion now.

You would know better than me. I just thought the core game looked rather complete in the last video. But then how am I to know how well implemented all the (for now) secret features are, yet.
Your post implies that the vast number of scripted story missions are done by now. Somehow, I don't think that is what you ment to say. Since I do hope that it will be these that introduce new features and can therefore be only created when these features are there.

You are correct - no story missions are done yet, as far as I know.

If there are none yet, then  it just goes to show how big of a virtue patience is.

I do wonder though how many story levels there will be. As there have been 20 for each of the others, I think there ought to be at least a little more. With these varieties for the CW3 map setup and creator software, anyone would think that there would be more of something that did not exist in the past games.

I doubt there will be much more than 20. With the open-world-like star map and random maps thrown in between the story missions, there's  plenty to do in between that is not directly story related. (You could place story missions systems three systems apart, for instance, to make the story go longer) So story missions (as I understand the distinction) are really only required to introduce new techs and to further the plot. Furthering the plot to some extend can also be done by short dialogues at the start/end of random missions. So, unless there are much more features and techs to be introduced, 20 story missions would be quite enough.

I'm just stating what could be done. I do like the story missions of 1 and 2 and I would be more than happy if there will be more than 20 of these in 3.

The strength and popularity of the Creeper World franchise is not related to the number of story-line planets, but rather to the community making a much larger number of maps.

The mapping community is a force to be reckoned with......

Even more so given the shortage of moderators.

True as that may be, I do consider the "original" story missions to be on a different level than any user created map. I cannot really explain it, but they feel special. Along with that comes this bittersweet feeling of regret and disappointment (for want of better terms, these two don't capture it quite. But I believe you know what I mean.) when you're finally through. All Good Things...

Campaigns and stories infuse the map with something more.  A sense of purpose and continuity, a sense of building importance that carries from map to map.  There are certain things you just cannot bring to a standalone map.

That said, I'm looking forward to what the community makes available in this new mapping environment.

I feel there should be at least some dialogue on every story map. I love following the story and it really keeps me into the story.

I thought there is already dialogue for every story map in the past 2 games. Are there any moments when there is not?

Granted that there are some times in both games where there is much less idalogue than others. I would definitely like to see what would happen if every story map had some detailed, extensive, dynamic, and various (but not ramdom) dialogue. It gives me more of a reason to actually play the story maps again.

In fact, speaking of the storyline mpaps, why is it that the CW2 story map with the Nexus in it is the only CW2 map in existance (including the custom maps) than has both a Nexus and the appropriate music? And why was it the only music heard in the last 2 level when the last level in CW1 had all tracks plus the Nexus track? I still liked it better in CW2 with it being the only track heard.

In fact, in terms of the maps, I think I would like it better if the story maps of CW3 started with a different music track each time. There does not have to be as many tracks as there will be levels for this to do that by the way.

Exactly what I mean the progression of story inspired me to actually finish CW2 and replay various CW1 missions.

I really like the idea of some critical maps having it's own separate mission music.

I don't know if this belongs here:

I hope the the whole custom map library will also be in game. The whole downloading and then importing could do with some streamlining.

I really cant wait to see what Virgil and his team of map makers has is store for us for storyline maps.  They were a little easy in CW1, and harder in CW 2.  I'm hoping it follows the same progression and they are harder yet in CW3.  Virgil has stated in the past that a LOT of people complain when they cant get past a story map on the first or second try, but hopefully there are a few worldt that hold tech's that are actually difficult to get to.

Thats one of my favorite aspects of the custom maps in the first 2 games.  There are a LOT of maps that are really way too difficult to be in the main storyline.  Those maps that a lot of people would give up on are often my favorites.

Everything looks awesome so far Virgil, so anytime you feel like taking my money I am ready to buy :)

Uhm.. okay. I guess I must have seen 2's "find maps online" button and just inferred that it would redirect me to my browser (like 1 does). Am a bit baffled right now, because before just now I would have sworn that this was what it did when I tried. Never mind, then.
Thanks anyway.
