While highly successful as a means to protect friendly units from Creeper, the Shield was immobile and easily put onto the front lines without Construction Packets being destroyed on the way. In the case of the new and improved Shield ship, you can build it way behind the front line and move it into position at your discretion!

Some particle beams and a good ship but even without them its a good sacrifice ship.

I found this ship to be too vulnerable to flanking for general use (in the singular, at least).
