Title: What are you looking forward to in CW3?
Post by: Pyxis_GeeK on April 25, 2013, 10:58:05 AM
Hey all. It's been a while since I have been active on the boards. Life happens. With that being said, I have caught up on the blog and the forums. I wanted to ask the community what you look forward to the most in Creeper World 3? Personally, I am looking forward to the Unity game engine. I think it will bring the Creeper world a much needed engine upgrade. From what I can see in the development videos it looks amazing. I am also excited to see the new enemies that will be in store for us. I am all around excited about the game and I anxiously await for the release. So what about y'all? What are you looking forward to in CW3?

I'm really looking forward to releasing it :)  That's my number 1.

I've gone overboard on most things in the game, but hopefully it will all come together to enhance the possibilities.  As for Unity, yes you should see a lot more 'game' for the same resource requirements.

CRPL (the scripting language) also opens the doors to some very sophisticated custom maps.  I use it in the story maps, but the jury is out on what the adoption rate will be by map authors.  The CW Nation tends to run smart so I have hopes that some folks will come up with some interesting and compelling things.

I agree. I think the map makers will make some awesome maps. I will tinker with CRPL some. It just depends on how much time I can devote to the game. Between school and working full time, I don't have much free time. Thanks for your response Virgil. I continue to be amazed with your personal involvement with the community.

Personally, I am looking forward to using the TERPS (I think that is their name)...  I so much wanna build from the ground up :)

I also look forward to the release the most.  That aside TERPs allow for interesting "turtle" play-styles.  As an over builder i really look forward to the opportunity to take advantage of it.  I also code some and look forward to getting into the CRPL.  I have a few concepts that I  want to try making custom maps with CRPL.  The maps that can be generated from CRPL that i can imagine are awesome.  The maps i expect to see could easily be beyond that.

So you like to turtle.... so do I.  The attached screenshot is a DMD map.  I have developed a liking for ones where there are islands separated by empty space.  There is no threat of really losing your position, but you have to amass enough forces to establish a beachhead in enemy territory.  It also requires heavy use of Guppies... which of all things considered are probably my most favorite new unit.

Don't have a screenshot, and it was probably a waste of time (would have been brilliant if we were allowed multiple CNs) but I landed my CN on the enemy shore, build a single nullifier and took out the spore tower.  All-in-all it was probably a waste of time, since I then had to fly the CN back over to safe territory.
Title: Re: What are you looking forward to in CW3?
Post by: knucracker on April 25, 2013, 03:06:58 PM
Might have been worth it... you didn't have to worry about spores after that. And I intentionally limited that map to 1 CN :)
Title: Re: What are you looking forward to in CW3?
Post by: Karsten75 on April 25, 2013, 03:21:17 PM
But my time was a few seconds off yours... I could have been quicker I suppose... Took about 5 restarts to position the nullifier where it exploded while being engulfed in creeper. The nice thing is that by the time my CN got to the other side of the map, I had almost 100 stored energy. :)

I think that the Guppies will open up a lot of tactical possibilities - I'm looking forward to trying to place forces deep into enemy territory and building back toward the front line.  I'm also intrigued by the Aether forges.

That is a really cool map. I like to turtle as well. That will be a fun map to play.

Not taking out the Spore tower made me faster. I guess I can do better still, but this is fine for now...

Edit. F11 doesn't take the controls in the shot.

Here's a screenie from shortly before:

I see you did the same thing I did on that tiny little island offshore.  You can land a Guppy there plus one more thing.  I started out with a mortar while I built forces, then switched it out for a relay like you have.

I started on the other side of the island... Worst score but I could have done it a lot faster (no overbuilding).
Looking forward to in CW3? CRPL!

I've found that it's usually quicker to return the CN to orbit rather than fly all the way across the map - but like you say, you lose out on the energy that would be generated on the flight...

The DMD is a huge leap - allowing players to simply dial up whatever style of map they're in the mood for.

I'm not a big fan of turtleing (though I do like a good fortress siege with limited resources), but I love island hopping.

Guppies are fantastically versatile and I love using them in a 'civil engineering' role - building remote hilltop bases.

The users are going to create some epic custom maps to take advantage of this feature!

I agree. I think guppies will make a style of play that will be really fun. Just like the screenshots earlier in this thread. Build an economy, build Guppies, then attack the enemy on their ground. That will be awesome.

I'm looking forward to the whole thing. Honestly, there is nothing mentioned that I'm not super excited about.

If I had to pick a few things at the top of my list I'd say the giant maps, guppies, new story. I also think I might wind up making some maps and playing with CRPL

My best time on Normandy.

I waaaay over built.

No shields, no AC, left the CN at home and supplied the entire invasion force by air.

More Arnhem than Normandy (well, Arnem if it had worked).

I look forward to an improved UI, inspiration for what kind of art to impose on the maps or just the grund with terps, high-awe Titans, and I expect a good array of orbitals. I also aim to point out whatever can be fixed along the way seeing what kinds of patches have been made for 1 and 2.

Edit:

Might I also add that I look forward to some good plot lore?

To me, there's nothing better than a good game with an even better story.

I have promised myself to finish the story from CW2 before CW3 comes out, but I just haven't gotten around to do it yet, heh heh  :)

I tend to overbuild - a lot.  I am looking forward to painting units.  Dragging the mouse and building 10 reactors all at once sounds awesome to me.  There are other UI tweaks that look good too.  The Normandy map you guys are posting screenshots of looks awesome, and I think guppies will probably be my new favorite unit in CW3.

I just finished playing through CW1 with double down turned on, (that second-to-last map was pretty threatening) and it seems to me that Creeper World 1 and Creeper World 2 each possess a certain something (which I can't quite describe) that the other lacks.

From the videos we've seen of Creeper World 3, it feels like its bringing the best of both to the table.

I'm looking forward to bigger maps.  I'm don't normally care much about visuals but the upgrade in CW3 is so big that I think it will really change and improve the feel of the game, so I'm looking forward to that.  I'm looking forward to being able to use terraforming against tricky terrain or to give myself excellent mortar placement.  I'm looking forward to the new units and new enemy/hazard types.  I'm looking forward to that Dial Map Device (I love how it flies in the face of the modern idea that you can't present players with too many options, or they'll become angry and confused).  Considering the custom maps that people managed for CW2, and that CW3 seems to have better support for that kind of thing, I'm definitely looking forward to what people come up with.  I'm looking forward to the conclusion of the story, Creeper World does a better job of conveying the cosmic scope of what's going on that most space/sci-fi games I've played...

...there's a lot to look forward to, basically.

I really like the fact that these boards can be as big or small as you want. This screen shot is one of Madmag's larger boards. His skills are well known in CW1.

Plus for those that like to multi-task, you can setup multiple bases.

I'm really looking forward to some multitasking maps. Having to set up multiple command nodes at different areas, not being able to interconnect them and still making them thrive on their own. I think multitasking is much more interesting than in the previous titles, since ressources are not shared but there are individual economies for each "base".
Further, I'm looking forward to a timely release!

I think you could only get this type of separated economy as long as there are no guppies available. The second the guppy tech becomes available you'll be able to start shipping resources from one economy to the next.

Doesn't mean these maps won't exist, but they'll likely have no guppies, which will make them interesting strategically anyway. I love guppies

Does CW3 have impassable walls like CW2?
Title: Re: What are you looking forward to in CW3?
Post by: Molay on May 08, 2013, 07:27:17 PM
Yes, no guppies, or a limited amount of guppies, or guppies with incremental costs (like the tech lab in CW2) if such a thing is possible (and customizable), would make such a map viable. Can't wait for them, and surely will get my own hands dirty making a couple of them^^

IIRC the impassable walls do exist, but I'm not sure in what video I heard it/where I read it. I might be wrong.

Haha, yeah, I feel like I played an awful lot of alpha's and beta's too in the last month^^ Playing a game and see features added to it over time are nothing new, nor shocking, to me either^^

But considering how far the game is, I may as well wait for the full release now. Shouldn't be long. Can't be :)

I think most of us would agree with batstar (eh-hemm, we don't have the luxary of playing the beta) in yelling PLZ PLZ PLZ PLZ PLZ RELEASE IT!
You have to cut the poor guy slack.
In fact, I think the creeper is a very effective weapon... at making people go crazy waiting to buy the game and destroy it :)

And In response to the cake question... what we've seen alone in his most recent video's... shows that this cake is far more than half way baked. I am an AVID lover of Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Ice Cream.   As far as the game is concerned... I think We're all infected with the "gotta have it now" disease.  Its like Pokemon's "Gotta Catch em All" BS... only in this case its... "GOTTA MURDER THAT CREEPER NOW!"

An Update from Vergil would be wonderful at this point... even just a Guesstimate on the release would be amazing...  We're generally very accepting fans... If you give us a date and miss it a bit we'll forgive you!  We're not gonna form a Lynching mob and come after you over a couple of days.

OK, for all of those wanting a half-baked cake, and then conflating that with cookie dough ice cream. Let me have your address, and I'll send you either a half-baked cake or a pint of cookie dough ice cream through the mail. Only one condition. You have to eat it all when it gets there. And you have to post a picture back on this forum of you eating it. If you get sick - that is on you.

As for the next person that mentions release date. A posting ban is in the works.

Virgil said he will ship when he is ready. That is the last and final word on that. I will not have these forum degenerate into mass hysteria screaming for a release of a product Virgil is not ready to release.

I have seen another popular game author hounded by fans wanting early release of his produt. He then made the mistake of promising a date and when he missed it (as is all to easy to do) the fans were so angry that they abused him so much he had to lock down all forms of posting on his blog.

Here we are going to have a civil community, and we are NOT, I repeat NOT going to have anyone posting in any way about the release date, and especially not in caps.

Wow... Talk about a can of worms.  I was just trying to for a friendly poke... not a full on community rage-athon.   We'll wait for the release like we have been patiently for the last few months.  The only thing I was getting at is we as fans would love some slightly more frequent updates.  Hell even Screenshots would be wonderful.  Virgil doesn't have to take time out of his development process to make videos (Which i understand takes a while, we're fine with that)  But a simple post once a week letting us all know he's alive and ticking and that he kicked over X number of those proverbial coding legos.  To be Completely Honest he's already done more than I ever hoped for with CW3.  It looks amazing already and we're anxious to get to it.  To Virgil directly:  Your doing a wonderful job and have built two amazing games... Keep up the good work and we'll be here when you get it done.

Lets just hope we only have a few more weeks to wait before this becomes a reality!

Hoping that for half a year now, won't stop hoping it now :D

And that example with a little patch of land to make a forward base with the guppies... That's exactly the sort of stuff I'm looking forward to, too :) That and a dozen other things that I have to try out for myself!

But my time was a few seconds off yours... I could have been quicker I suppose... Took about 5 restarts to position the nullifier where it exploded while being engulfed in creeper. The nice thing is that by the time my CN got to the other side of the map, I had almost 100 stored energy. :)
oooh, so the CN regenerates while flying? In CW1 it had to be landed to generate energy. I suppose it was odin city instead of a CN, but similar.

I'd have to say meeting people who are as excited as me about CW3. Oh, and, I absolutely CAN NOT wait for the Dial Map Device. I can't wait to experiment with that for hours upon hours. :D

I'm looking forward to being able to jsut for the heck of it, put a collector in a power zone. Even if it does nothing, i'l still be tickled to do it in the first place.

Other than that... Creeper World 3's Everything.

Seeing what unexpected challenges people think up using CRPL in custom maps

Guppies, the ability to stand up more than one command-and-control point, and terraforming.
I'll play with CRPL, too, certainly, being the geek that I am, but CRPL isn't the main attraction of the game for me.

Other than what has already been said, I am looking forward to morters that take each other's shots into account.
I don't know how many times in CW2 I have 10 Launchers waste so much potential on a small spot of creeper that is slighty denser than the creeper around it

I didn't know they did...  :-[
I'm looking forward to the chatter it's going to generate on the forums and such

In Aether at 28:00 it looks like the 2 pz morters aim, not at the what is currently the densest creeper, but at what will be the densest creeper (after morter shots).

Indeed. Mortars in CW3 use predictive targeting. Each mortar takes into account preceding shots fired by other mortars in the same firing cycle.

So they use the same targeting system as the Bertha?

No.  Beartha is "dumb" artillery.  It looks at the deepest creeper and if no other bertha is targeting it.l, it will mark the spot for creeper eradication.

well.. when the targeting algorytm looks that no other bertha targets the same spot it's not a dumb artillery...

Didn't the mortars and bertha's use the same damage map? At least they 'substract' the damage done from incoming bullets.

Just remember.

Waiting for it to complete is better than getting it early.

Look at Sonic '06.

Now Looks at CW3.

I see you're now more willing to wait :3

I'm surprised nobody else mentioned this one yet.

I'm personally most looking forward to the ability to mass deploy units by painting them in a line. Building reactors in CW2 has gotten to be very tedious.
