Title: Weekly history tournament - computer (game) inventions - closing Sept. 26

Please post your progress/total scores in this topic to ease the calculations at the end of the week.

Good luck and enjoy! :)

I won't have time myself until Wednesday, so I'm sure some nice times will have been set by then.

Yeah, I don't like the 'fools mate' maps that much (which can be finished without fighting or engaging the creeper at all). The current maps will require some more skills and will ensure more exciting gameplay. :)

These maps are more to my liking than some of the previous sets.

My first day scores

Map   Date   Score   Time

1.   May 12th, 1942           8289   12:23
2.   January 25th, 1947   7978   15:12
3.   May 24th, 1972           9148   5:35
4.   August 12th, 1981   8595   9:48
5.   January 2nd, 1982   8860    7:43

   Totals   42870   50:41

Room for improvement at least on the first two. (in the unlikely event I win this week; I'm going to be out of town/no computer access from Wed PM to Mon night or Tuesday.)

I suggest you have a look at the solutions posted for the previous 2 tournaments. These will give away some 'tricks' that you can apply for this one as well.

No tricks involved except building as much power as possible before engaging the creeper. And capping the emitters on the high ground with unsupported blasters at the right moment. (That takes practice - too soon or not enough blasters and they run out of ammo before you can build links to them.)

Please dont post solutions until the tournament is over. You wouldnt want to give away your secrets would you? We all should play to win and you definetly cant do that by showing part of your hand.

I suggest that we indeed only post solutions when the tournament is over.

And by the way: Alwego, your totems won't be connected after the final move of OC (so you probably move a blaster to that spot).

I have a limit of 5 maps within a theme and picked inventions that really pioneered at their time. The C64 wasn't really the first of its kind, but it had superb graphics and sound for that time and was a lot better than other personal/home computers for a much lower price (thus earning a spot in this tournament; Virgil had one too!).

I suggest you win a tournament (or become second when I win this one), so you can choose next weeks theme and pick 'the 5 most interesting computer games ever'. ;)

I know :) I can't put in one place OC and collector. I showed only OC. I want give only idea, not full solutions (players need more collectors, blasters)

I guess you guys dont need an explanation but I was going to compete in this weeks competition but I was finally able to get an external harddrive so I can reformat my computer without losing any information. So with that said it will probably take me the rest of the week to get my computer back up and running. Anyway good luck to all those participating and I will see yall in the next tournament. ;D

Hmmm, it seems I really stimulate people.... ;D

What's wrong with the second place? And what's wrong with improving yourself? Or with participating just for fun?

I post my solutions at the end of the week, so you can always learn from it and polish your techniques. You can't expect to set the best times without practising a lot.

I almost feel like apologizing for my scores and I didn't even try hard this week. :( I guess it's really time for CW2....

PS: Siccles, please come back! ;)

Sorry Kees, the maps are hard this week. My brain is so de-technified from working with my autistic boy that I couldn't even finish the first two. I promise to give it another try tonite if I can switch my brain back to power management mode. I guess first place doesn't mean much if there are no other competitors.

I guess first place doesn't mean much if there are no other competitors.

Well, I think we still have about 7 competitors who finished all maps, but I wouldn't mind playing against 200-300 others. I know that won't be possible with the amount of people playing CW at the moment, but I find it sad when people quit (or don't even participate) just because I've set some fast times. It's lonely at the top they say....

The good thing however is that next weeks theme will be chosen by the person ending up at the second spot when I'm still at #1 on Sunday evening. Besides the theme he/she will also pick the maps, so maybe these will be a bit easier than this weeks maps. :)

This makes me think of introducing a handicap for skilled players. The energy generated by OC could become less depending on the average score stored in the database, so my start would be a lot slower. I wouldn't mind that (although I know it's not gonna happen).

I agree, If Kees is always first then he always picks the week's maps, Make it the second person who picks.

PS: Take note that Kees is at fault, If he made a tournament where only 1st place gets to pick the maps, and he constantly gets 1st place, Then obviously people would not like it. I am not saying Kees is a showoff or is mean, Just.......you are discouraging people from get a good time......

PPS: This is not meant to insult Kees.....I hope..........

Ehm, KEES added the rule you were suggesting when this tournament started for the very reasons you mention...

Pfff, I'm glad at least someone noticed it. I've posted it at about 4 places! :P

Let's extend this rule right now: as long as I keep winning the tournament the number 2 will pick the theme + maps. I will only be able to pick the theme again once I didn't win, but do win a future tournament. Everybody happy? 8)

Yeah I agree 100%. I don't get it. Why would someone like Kees, who is a moderator, beta tester, has made tons of maps, is somewhat of a leader on the forums (doing things like... organizing the weekly tournament), and holds most of the high scores, be any good at this game? It really just makes no sense  ::).

<sarcasm/>

Chill out guys, this is only the 2nd week of the tournament that Kees has been in charge of, I started this thing a few weeks ago, and Kees has happened to win both of the tournaments we've had so far, and has the highest scores for this one. It's not unfair or anything. The simple fact is that the dude has been playing this game longer, is more experienced, and probably spends more time working on strategy as well.

On top of that, I've never seen him post boastfully, or be condescending to anyone, no matter how green, and a system for choosing bumping the choice of the next one down to someone else is already in the rules. So he picked two themes in a row and has won the first few? I'm not surprised at all, or offended. Go glance at the most played maps, and see which name comes up under highest score the most.

I would have competed in this weeks tournament but I had to reformat my computer so that took up some of my time this week. I havent even reinstalled CW yet. I have no problem that Kees has won two weeks in a row. He is a good player and it shows in his scores. I have never played for getting the highest score. My times will confirm that in the last tournament. Pretty much last but thats ok. I like playing and I hope that my scores will begin to improve over time. It is hard for me to play and go for the highest score. Thats not my style I would rather play the way I play. I found that when playing in the last tournament I would get frustrated when I wouldnt be able to complete a map in a time that would compete with the lower times. So instead of playing for fun and enjoying the game, it became work. But I told myself it shouldnt matter if I win as long as I am having fun. So who cares who wins or loses? There are many players here that are way better than me. No big deal. I play for fun.

So he picked two themes in a row and has won the first few? I'm not surprised at all, or offended. Go glance at the most played maps, and see which name comes up under highest score the most.

Thanks Randy! :)

I want this (and any other) tournament to be fun for everyone and give everybody a chance to pick the theme and maps. That's exactly why I proposed a new rule after winning the second tournament (which was the first tournament organized by me). I even posted it in 4 different places:

Quote from: UpperKEES on September 06, 2010, 04:58:19 PM
When the tournament has been won by the same player for 3 consecutive times the runner up (#2) will pick the next theme to ensure themes & maps will be picked by different people.

Quote from: UpperKEES on September 20, 2010, 08:25:16 AM
I suggest that if I win this tournament as well (3 consecutive times) the runner up (#2) will pick next weeks theme, so themes will come from different people.

Quote from: UpperKEES on September 20, 2010, 07:15:03 AM
I suggest that if next weeks tournament has the same winner (3 times in a row), the runner up (#2) can pick the theme, so themes will come from different people.

Besides that I post my solutions, so others can try to use the same strategy & tactics. The only thing I won't do is play badly. Sorry for that! ;D

Yeah, I've said it many times: first try to improve yourself and be happy with the few points/seconds you gain every week. As long as you see progress you should be happy. And even when you don't you could be satisfied with just being able to finish all maps, which is already hard enough for a lot of players. Don't make it too hard for yourself, just make it hard for the Creeper! ;)

Ok, Kees should just get his own medal cause hes to good and second place should get to pick

<sarcasm/>

Very well said... I have come close a couple of times to beating Kees, but I haven't been successful yet. I look it as a challenge to try and beat him on a map. Here's to the next map  ;)

Ehm, KEES added the rule you were suggesting when this tournament started for the very reasons you mention...

The winner (best combined score) gets to pick next weeks theme. If we have the same winner for 3 consecutive times, the runner up (#2) will pick the theme. See here (http://knucklecracker.com/forums/index.php?topic=4621.0) for the rules and an overview of themes.

Oh wow, I can't believe I did not notice that rule due to my stupidity, Sorry Kees!!!

...but seriously, please don't brag or be arrogant, I don't like those kinds of people. Not that I found you bragging at all.......You were mostly helpful.....

PS: If you wonder Why I don't like braggers, It because most of the time they lie, or when they brag, they do it in an insulting way. I found a lot of people like this in other games, however CW does not have this problem since so many people are active on the forums a lot lately.

It's actually Fish who has beaten my scores often lately, even on my own maps. He's rather busy now, but I'm sure he'll join us again when the running season has come to an end. He's a good example of someone who is happy with gradual improvements and his gameplay definitely became as good as mine. I just happen to have more time available at the moment.

(sorry for the running lingo ;D)
When I go to run a race, being at the age level I am (I am a sophmore going against people as old as seniors in high school), I do not expect to get first. Expecially at races where I am running against hundreds of people. But what I do, is set goals for myself, like last race my goal was to keep up with the other teams #1 runner. About half way through though, he got ahead of me, and remains the only sophmore in the league right now faster than me. :)

But what I mean, is to set goals for yourself and do  ;Dnot always expect to win. You can surely appreciate your times when your done, and who knows, maybe you will get in the top three. ;)

NOT!!!!!
i give mad props and respect to kees for everything earned. if i was that good at this game i would be doing the same thing.

Heheh! :D That was quite a battle in the last few hours....

It's the total score that counts:

Quote from: UpperKEES on September 20, 2010, 07:55:09 AM
The winner (best combined score) gets to pick next weeks theme.

The difference between total score and total time is normal: gaining 1 second on a fast map will give you more points than gaining 1 second on a slower map, due to the logarithmic score formula. This means your total time can be faster while your total score is less.

For now we are sure that Alwego became second, which means he can pick next weeks theme + maps, so please start thinking about that!

I will calculate and post the totals for everybody later on today, because I don't have time now.

I think about date of birth people from "The World's Billionaires" list. ( http://www.forbes.com/lists/2010/10/billionaires-2010_The-Worlds-Billionaires_Rank.html ).
After 4-5 hours I give the map, just back home and look for something more than 2-3 minutes.

btw. Yeah, second again! (best of the rest) :]

I'm not sure if you can find the dates of birth at that site....

This is link only for rich people. Google can tell us when they was born :) (check msg)

I find it funny how Fisherk is like, always 3rd place whenever I go check a map's score. I don't think he gets mad about that though, Cuz 3rd place is good compared to my times.............

You can surely appreciate your times when your done, and who knows, maybe you will get in the top three. ;)

Yes, when cross country is over, I will have a few more hours in the day than before, and then I can get back to beating you! ;D :P

This is a little random, but I just graduated, and I ran too. Just wanted to say hey to a few other runners =]. This summer I spent training for the Air Force Marathon, and that was awesome. But right now my feet are kind of a FUBAR (Broken left small toe, torn ligament, and a stress fracture in my right foot), so I'm out for a while. I'm going nuts from not running.

Another runner! :D

I know what you mean. During the the summer I had to stop for a couple weeks because my ill fitting caught up to me. My left ankle hurt when running any amount of distances, and was only getting worse, so I had to take some time off. I fixed that problem, but now I rolled my same ankle during practice. Now I am hobbling around with an ankle brace during practice to help it heal. Though I will not get to much into it, because I really started ranting  here (http://knucklecracker.com/forums/index.php?topic=4602.0) ;D. But I am again onto the road to recovery, but it is my varsity cross country team that I am worried about. We are dropping like flies from injuries. Here is what it looks like:

#1 Out, possibly for season
#2 doing fine (for now)
#3 Just rolled his ankle, out for at least one race
#4 Okay right now, but passed out 2 races ago because he did not drink enough water. The idiot had to be hooked up to an IV to pump water directly into his body :P (he did good in the race though).
#5 (me) Ankle injury that allows me to run, but not at my full potential >:(
#6 Just injured himself over the weekend playing football. He should be recovered in a week though.
#7 Fine

This list makes me feel very depressed, especially since when we are all not injured, this is probally the second best team in our school history. We have a real shot at going to state this year.

But any ways, I can definitely understand how you feel right now, I hate not being able to run. ;) And I can not wait until I run my first marathon, the longest distance I am doing right now is the 5k.

[Off-Topic]

Hey Fish, Inhale when your right foot hits the ground and exhale with your left.
It stops you from getting a cramp as fast if not fully.
It has something to do with the human body.  :-\
But it works!  ;D

These are mine. For the short ones I have shown my entire layout, and for the long ones, just my starting and/or setup. If you did anything different, could show how you did it on that map?

Your solutions for May 12, 1941 and August 12, 1981 are very original; I'm surprised your time isn't faster than mine. ;) I'll post differences when you found the correct screenies.

For January 25, 1947 (inclusing picking up that upgrade on the way) and May 24, 1972 (with mainland filled with collectors) your solution is almost equal to my solution.

I did January 2, 1982 with 5 blasters: 2 at the bottom left and 3 where you bridge with OC. I bridge directly (with a blaster + OC), so I build a collector close to the other ones. I bridged the gap to the left with a SAM.

What do you mean?

I also found that January 25, 1947 could be done without moving the city. You could hold the bottom level with 4 blasters early on, but then you need to build 2 SAMs, and then 2 more blasters to hold back the increase of Creeper. I gave up on this plan because while it barely worked, it was extremely slow.

August 12, 1981 was my favorite, probally because I got to cap some emitters. I just get a good feeling after capping an emitter. ;D

January 2, 1982 was my least favorite, because by the end I was moving 3 objects constantly and I was arming/disarming the blaster on the bottom left corner. All of that at once, Bluck. :P

The first and fourth screeny are empty (although you moved the city). Or is that as intended?

That is what I intended, both because I did not have enough time and because I could not accurately remember my placement any way. :P
