Title: Random Odin City Explosion
Post by: Neilos on May 19, 2010, 09:25:34 AM
I was playing this map

http://knucklecracker.com/creeperworld/mapcomments.php?id=1923&scores=1 (http://knucklecracker.com/creeperworld/mapcomments.php?id=1923&scores=1)

And twice now, at 3:30 the first time and 3:37 the second, Odin City just randomly exploded.  The Creeper was nowhere near it, can't have been spores as the map has none.

I've looked at the map in the editor and seen no reason for it, and on my third attempt I finished the map with few problems.  Is there something really obvious I'm missing here that could have caused the city to be destroyed?

Really weird. I played that map and did not experience it. In fact I've never experienced OC exploding unless there is creeper destroying it.  Did you have sound on? If so, did you hear the warning alarm that creeper has touched Odin City?

After the explosion, do you get the "game lost" screen? If you get it again, hit backspace and take a screen shot of it. Then post that here.

On second thoughts, you can also take the screenshot with the backspace key as soon as OC explodes. The map image might have more information than the completion screen.

Hmm i havent played that map , but the city might get some damage because its a bit outside of the map .
If its possibel , you should try to move the city .

There might be an bug about it , so the city get more damage if there is more creepers .
Since there are different times this happends .

It can also be an energy bug , so the city get damage if it hasnt enought energy .

But somekind of bug there has to be , if you have checked it in the mapeditor .

Just tried again (this time with sound - never usually have it on) and was getting the warning sound for around 45 seconds before the city exploded (this time at 3:27).  Despite the Creeper not getting within... I'd say about 8 or 9 blaster widths of the city, and the city being surrounded by undamaged collectors.

Moving the city seems to solve the problem though, so I'll assume it's something to do with the city not being fully on the map.

Well first thing to do , is move the city then =P

I just played it again.  Did not happen.

Did u take a screenshot?  I'd like to see your strategy and how the creeper can possibly get to the city.

Oh then VERSION might have something to do with it .
Do you have version 0380 ?

There might be an emitter outside the normal playing field (as we've seen some out of bounds totems before), but then you would assume other players would experience the same thing, so maybe it's indeed a version issue....

That should be shown in the mapeditor , if you remember to look for it =P
But there was blasters to protect the city , so i dont think there is an outside the map thing .

No, you can't see those out of bounds items in the map editor.... (you can't even select or (re)move them).

And I'm not sure if a blaster would fire at locations outside the normal playing field.

Good call on the correct game version. Download the latest patch here: http://knucklecracker.com/creeperworld/patches.php

And please post a screenshot. I'm very curious about this.

Version is 0380, so it's not that.

Just re-did it, with a basic setup to hold off the creeper and waited for it to happen with the same result... did notice one thing though.  When the creeper touched the left side of the screen, the alarm went off.  So it looks like the game is reading the off-screen part of the city as being on the left of the screen... like the game area is wrapped around.

Here's the screenie:

Wow, OK, nice one. Same effect in this map - http://knucklecracker.com/creeperworld/mapcomments.php?id=1956.

I'm sure now that Virgil has some info on it he'll look into it.

Now on another topic, you really don't want to lose that much territory to the creeper - and all in 3 minutes?

Yes, when Odin City or a drone base are placed at the edge of the map (via the map editor at a location you can't get to during the game) they will look at the opposite side of the map for determining if creeper is present.  So you can think of this as "wrapping around" to the other side.  This is an edge case I didn't check for since it doesn't come up during normal game play and can only be created by putting something at the very edge of the screen via the map editor.

Wow, I can see a really weird map emerging....

Just another 'warping' bug whiteout something is placed on the edge of the map or in the map editor. You see NO emitters on left. (http://knucklecracker.com/forums/index.php?topic=2796.0)

Easier and more efficient to fight one front instead of two - the left side territory has nothing useful and the only problematic emitter is the very strong top one, so thought I'd save the energy a proper defence of the left side would use up and just hold it off using a couple of blasters.

Saves a lot of unnecessary energy use.

LOL, the map author (unintentionally?) deprived you of that strategy.  What's your best time on this map?  Might explain why I can't best 23 minutes.
