Title: Weekly 5-Map Tournament – Experimental Week - closing 17 Feb 2013
Post by: ea3401 on February 11, 2013, 01:43:42 AM
This week all maps have experimental weapons. Let the dark beam knuckle down to work.

Well, at least we know they should all be possible, now. Funny car coat was the only one I looked at and wasn't sure if I was going to be able to complete. :P

Yeah, the 3rd mission is really hard, but definitely not impossible. :)

funny car coat was fun... I really should have went for a better time.. but I defended myself and then just built tech labs and researched stuff for ten minutes then pushed out. I didn't even end up using a dark beam, just conversion bombs and blasters

I'd love a screenshot on funny car coat.  I can't seem to get enough energy to do much of anything.

Here's my pic. I think at about the 13 minute point the repulsors couldn't hold back the creeper anymore... but ea3401 beat the level in 6 minutes i think... so there must be a MUCH more effective way than my 18 minute time.

Wow.  You really did dig in.  I tried a similar approach above ground but couldn't stay alive long enough.  Thanks!

If it were me (just looking at the map, not actually having played through it) - I would probably try to conversion bomb the bottom-right emitter ASAP (ideally before the walls break through, though I'm not certain you could do it quite that fast) - it's a significantly higher intensity emitter than the middle emitter, so the anti-creeper bubble will last for quite a while if you use shields well, and if you let some of the anti-creeper through to the top it can let you defend without needing repulsors too.

Continually rebuild shields if necessary (ie. if you still need to build more reactors and the anti-creeper on it's own wouldn't last long enough) whenever they break and the anti-creeper flows through - this way you can minimize the damage the anti-creeper takes by only making it take damage from the creeper for a few seconds each time the shields break.

So, I finally beat that ugly thing.  I started out like Wheatmidge--digging in. But I focused on reactors and not tech, so that I could build conversion bombs.  I managed to knock out the two emitters by the ten minute mark using mostly conversion bombs plus a few blasters, shields, & repulsors.  I should've done a much quicker job mopping up, and I finally built a dark beam to take out the last separate emitter.  But it was ugly and I think could've been done much more quickly.

I used the dark beam to clean the top area from time to time, while I was building a second base on left side.

I was thinking more along the lines of this:

I stopped at that point because I don't like micromanaging dark beams - way too tedious for me.

In case of no more change in the next hours, the baton will be passed to Shawn Asmussen.

Congratulations, ea3401. I'd love to see how you got the dark beam to function effectively with so little energy on the right side, and how you got from the pictured status to completion in the next 2 minutes. I must be missing some basic concepts here.

...Only two people able to complete all maps!

Even worse, only 9 players posting a total of only 31 scores - the lowest participation I've seen.

For me, it was the frustration of running from the drones and the flood of creeper at the beginning of each mission. Tedious. Took more time and restarts than I had patience. Also, seeing some of ea's times left me discouraged - don't see how to do that well.

Hard to explain. Have you seen smileys video?

Of course the classic video about efficiency is this one:

@ea3401,
You missed my point entirely.

If the purpose of your game selection was to showcase your own ability and discourage participation, you succeeded admirably. Posting links to videos of other games might provide some generic insight to the concept, but do nothing to help those trying to figure out how to complete the list of games you created.

Thanks for the reminder, ea3401. I have of course seen Smiley's video, but had forgotten how effective he was in reducing even the heaviest creeper with the "jumping mirror" trick. I had not seen yours, using on-off dark beam techniques. Thanks for both.

using on-off dark beam techniques

What do you consider more tedious? CW1 bridging, or CW2 DB pulsating?

Just a chime in re. the maps...only reason I didn't finish was that I was out of town after Thursday.  I do hate evading drones and creep at the beginning, but I figure that's just a personal preference.  Congrats to the excellent playing that did happen.  I'm going to study those posted vids...
