How do you plan visualize terraforming?
Clearly the laser adding/removing the height wouldn't look acceptable in 3D.

"Clearly"? And you can tell this how? The entire game is in mock=up mode. You've seen no animation, no-one here has even worked on it and above all, you're assuming there will be a terraforming component.

Well, not particularly. Losing 1 feature and gaining a handful is not a downgrade. I'm not worried though.
