Because the Nexus feeds off the creeper. If you are looking to complete level 20 try using conversion bombs to change the Creeper around the nexus into anti-creeper and aim dark beams at the nexus.

You'll notice that the nexus only activates after it charges up while on contact with creeper.
I was under the theory that the nexus is 'bound' to wherever it is by the creeper, thus the activation time.
Therefore, if it's still bound by creeper there's no getting rid of it.

I found out that th produce creeper themselves.
But you are right.
They do feed of the stuff.
