Title: A Tragedy Forgotten - A Five Part Map Series By Ebon_Heart and PeterPower
Post by: Ebon Heart on January 24, 2012, 02:59:31 AM
This topic is for a custom map series PeterPower and I are working on, Dragon Slayer's Academy (name subject to change) A Tragedy Forgotten. (name was changed) We're sort of working on the whole series at once, which makes it interesting. I'll be updating this topic continuously as we make more progress on the maps, so check back often! Basically, this series starts when a princess is kidnapped (I've always been one for cliches) by an evil dragon spirit. You must set out on a quest to vanquish the spirit and bring back the princess. The art, including creeper drawings, custom tiles/characters/backgrounds are done by PeterPower. The fields/general terrain layout/plot are done by me. We're both contributing to ideas for maps, as well as the look and feel, and general balancing. Between the two of us, we hope to bring all the members of the cw2 community a very enjoyable series. I thought it'd be interesting to start this topic now, so you can all see how it progresses. The First map is submitted, and I've now added a suggested soundtrack to each map. Thanks to 2b3o4o for telling me how to get the soundtracks to loop, so you don't constantly have to tab back to youtube to enjoy the music. :D

Title:
A Tragedy Forgotten Part 1-The Burning Castle
Description:
The first part of our soon to be trilogy series. It's a normal day at the castle-which-is-not-named-yet when suddenly, a giant dragon swoops in and kidnaps the princess, setting fire to the castle as it passes.
Progress:
Done! Go here to access the map. http://knucklecracker.com/creeperworld2/viewmaps.php?embedded=false&gameVer=&mapid=768 and don't forget to put on the music. :D have fun.
Suggested Soundtrack:

Sneak Peak:

looking at this screenshot, I realize I have a few changes to make to the castle. Just ignore those for now.

Title:
A Tragedy Forgotten Part 2-A Quest For a Sword
Description:
After extinguishing the fire at the castle, a wise mage informs you of a mystic sword that has been locked away for centuries. It is your only hope of defeating the dragon that has kidnapped your princess, so you set out for it immediately. When you get there, you must best the spirit which has been charged with guarding this mystic blade. The spirit will test both your mind, and body, to determine if you are worthy of wielding this magical weapon.
Progress:
plot and concept ironed out. Terrain layout pretty much done. Fields are uber complicated, and may take a bit more time. Big plant head now moves towards the ship, and shoots stuff at you as it does so. I need to tweak drones, add some more fields up top, create a few more trigger events, and program the dragon. Then after some testing, it's ready for release. I'm aiming for next weekend.
Suggested Soundtrack:

Sneak Peak:

Contest Information:
Due to the extremely good reviews Part 1 of this series has already gotten, we've decided to add a bit of extra fun to this map. We may continue to do this for similar maps if the contest goes over well. This goes beyond bragging rights, but a chance to be mentioned in the next map. All you need to do is figure out what's going to happen next. Obviously you know from playing Part 1 that Leoros has gone off to find a sword... but what specifically do you expect to happen in this episode? Send a message to me (Ebon_Heart) And a bcc to PeterPower with what you think is a basic summary of the plot for this part of the series. Don't post it here. I'll give you a hint to help get those cogs a 'turnin. We're introducing two 'new' characters in this mission. They were mentioned in Part 1, you should know their names. So bonus points if you can tell me who they are (this will be a major factor to figuring out the plot)
First up is this mystery girl:

And next is this mystery boy:

Send us a message if you have any idea who these two might be. And then tell us where you think the plot will go from there. The More details the better! Whichever message we get that is closest to the right answer when the map is published is the winner. The winner will be announced in the closing conversation of the map, so keep an eye out for it! (if I put it in the opening conversation, their submission may spoil something) I may release a few hints over time, if no one can get... even close. If you make multiple guesses, your most recent one will be counted.
Do not post your guess here. Send me a message or you will be disqualified!
(Please don't spam my inbox.)

Title:
A Tragedy Forgotten Part 3-Remembrance
Description:
Upon touching the mystic blade, you remember parts of your past you had suppressed. You must then survive these memories, and re-assess your view on the current situation. Can you trust even your most cherished memories?
Progress:
Concept came from me rambling last night. Some terrain layout done, as well as a few tests for possible creeper effects.
Suggested Soundtrack:
http://www.yourepeat.com/watch?v=NIag_bNglpA&feature=related
Sneak Peak:
Probably won't come until the release of A Tragedy Forgotten Part 2, so as to avoid spoiling the story too much.

Title:
A Tragedy Forgotten Part 4-Vanquishing the Beast
Description:
After claiming the mystic blade as your own, you set out to kill the foul demon that has kidnapped the princess. This is going to be an all out boss battle, featuring every twist and gimmick in the book, so get ready. It's going to be a bumpy ride.
Progress:
All the math is done in a notebook sitting right next to me on my desk. The dragon is drawn for this one (same dragon we're using in Dragon Slayer's Academy Part 1) and it should be a pretty epic boss battle. The Dragon will move all over the map, horizontally, and vertically, and at the moment, is only about 1/10 of the way through the total path I have planned for it. Not to mention attacks, and programming triggers on the emitters. This map makes my head hurt just thinking about it, I'm not going to lie. But it should be interesting in the end. And I actually have a presentable sneak peak for this one!
Suggested Soundtrack:
http://www.yourepeat.com/watch?v=IEeEUPrIDao&feature=related
Sneak Peak:

Title:
A Tragedy Forgotten Part 5-Credits
Description:
This is mostly a just for fun map we're planning, in which you have completed your quest, and are back at the castle. Featuring animated credits of creeper and anti creeper... should be very enjoyable to watch. Will also finish up the plot.
Progress:
Concept came from me rambling last night (again). Some initial planning is done, but nothing besides. It'll take place in the same spot as Dragon Slayer's Academy Part 1... but without the dragon.
Suggested Soundtrack:
http://www.yourepeat.com/watch/?v=14ZkxaV7fQQ
Sneak Peak:
I may release something soon depending on how much I get to play with this later tonight. :D trust me, this map will be worth playing, it'll tie up the plot I'm sure you're all dieing to read about.

A note. Please read the plot. I've put a lot of work into it, and I'm sure you will not regret reading it. My goal for this series is to make someone cry by the final mission.

Hah, I wish I'd finally gotten my problem with fields fixed. :P I've just found enough work around to make it work fairly nicely. It works so much better when moving 1 subcell/frame, though. (see Dragon Slayer's Academy Part 1)

Originally, I figured we'd be done in a few days, but it has been a huge amount of time designing these levels. A week so far at least. The creeper art will be a major feature in these levels and it's such an interesting brush to paint with. It is great fun drawing the pictures and having Ebon_Heart bring them to life. I'm lucky if I can animate a mouth moving up and down. haha. I am astounded by the animations and effects Ebon has created in this series so far.

I think we both underestimated the size of this project... lol. It started as one mission, then I decided to stretch it out into 3 to get some buildup, and then I fell in love with the plot, and it may well turn into 5. lol. I have this bad habit of creating more work for my self before I'm even finished with what I'm working on. (look at my halted First Encounters series) But regardless, it'll be a very cool series, and it's the end result that counts. :D

I feel the need to announce PeterPower and I have decided to call this series, "A Tragedy Forgotten" this was the subject of intense debate, and based on the plot, this is what we came up with. Thoughts/opinions/questions/comments/concerns?

Personally, I enjoyed the intense debate. I think it went something like.. E: Hey let's change the name. P: OK.
We wanted to have the first level ready for Friday, but it now appears it might be Saturday or Sunday... We just keep adding more and more evil to it...

First level is submitted! And I'm going to go ahead and add a, "suggested sound track" section to each map. This should give you a (very) general idea of the proposed look and feel of the map. And if you play the sound track while playing the map, you just feel on top of the world. (tested and confirmed with level 1, it's epic beyond words.) If we do this right, the maps will be epic beyond words as well. :D

There's been a delay with map number 1. It actually had a bug, and I had the MapMod team reject it. I'm creating a new version to upload right now. I'm sorry for the wait, I'm a little off my deadline.

I just played your first map, and can only say that it was epic (as stated elsewhere).

I was curious if you could describe in more detail the process you have used in creating this map, and any tools/methods you might have used to keep track of the fields controlling the dragon.

Gladly. It all started with that dragon. PeterPower originally drew it vertically, so it actually fit. I then took the dragon in the editor and made a series of 72 pin fields to turn it on its side. (after making a copy of the vertical dragon) I moved the dragon 3 spaces up, then ran the editor a few frames, reset, and it took 3 rows of the dragon and flipped it. I then used fields up top to move it into place in two sections. Once that was all done, I cleared the map of all fields and terrain, and actually got to work. I made a 1x24 field, and moved it at the dragons snout. Then I programmed the field to move to the left side of the screen, move across in 95 frames, go to starting position (place holder was 90-90) and then wait 600 frames, go to the right, and move across to the left in 95 frames, then turn off. I copied and pasted this field 135 times (it was an empty field box at the time) moving it along the length of the dragon. Then continued to its midsection on the second piece of the dragon. Then I went back to field 1, and put pin fields where they were needed. then just went down the line of fields and did the same for each piece, until I had every spot with creeper covered in a pin field. Then I set each field to have an initial delay 1 higher than the one before it (starting at 30 and continuing on until 165). Once that was done, came the tedious part... I made the outline for that magma pit (minus the hell-portal) near the bottom of the map, and had a hole in it. I then moved each row of the dragon, one by one, into that pit and moved it into place so that everything fit nice and snug. The main thing I was looking for here were the sections where there were big holes in the creeper (such as spines leading backwards) and whatever could fit in place to fill those. After about 2 hours of work, I finally got all these pieces in, and in a smaller space than I'd expected! (I had expected I would need to make the pit bigger, but there was actually a lot of left over room). So I then went through the line of fields and set their starting points to the correct locations, so they would teleport back to their spots in that pit for storage. And then I thought I was done. But of course, workaholic me decided to make the dragon loop instead. And with less time in between passes. So I actually changed the delay at the end of a pass to 150, deleted the off commands in all 135 fields, and set another action to teleport to their starting positions in 1 frame (after second pass). Originally, when they were done, they were all going to teleport to one central point in the magma pit and go off. So of course, this raised a question: what do I do for fireballs? Originally the dragon was going to shoot subcells of creeper from its tongue (see ugly dark red line in its mouth.... I ended up leaving it there) but with the dragon looping, I needed an unending supply of ammo. So I looked to the empty section in the pit, where no pin fields were located. I made fields around it, added some emitters, a dripping effect, and kablamo! Fireball compression chamber. The fireballs move to a a spot slightly under ground in 90 frames. The ones on the left are clones of each other, with initial delays differing by 10, and x coordinates differing by 10 subcells. Same thing with the fireballs for the right movement. And that was about it. Later on, we added drones because we decided there should be some kind of threat at the start. The gateways let out a drone when the dragon's mouth is over them. (after initial wave, the others just have a delay of 493) The dragon moves through its loop in 494 frames, and there's apparently a 1 frame delay between switching drone waves. The drones were actually programmed by PeterPower. I hope this helps, do you have any more questions? Also... feel free to pull the map apart in the editor and see what makes it tick.

Attention everyone! A new sneak peak of A Tragedy Forgotten Part 2 has been posted. Take a look on the first post. And in addition to this, I've announced a contest. We may start associating a contest with every map we do, depending on whether or not this goes over well. Basically, all you have to do is guess what's going to happen next, and send your guess to me via message.
Do not post it on this topic
whoever is closest will be mentioned in the next map. I've posted a few hints in the first post to help get you started. Check under the section for, "A Tragedy Forgotten Part 2, a Quest for a Sword" It is explained more fully there. Have fun, keep playing, and don't forget to check by often for the new updates to this series.
EDIT for clarity: You may talk about the contest in general on this thread, just not your submission for the contest.

I posted a new sneak peak for A Tragedy Forgotten Part 2. I hope you like it, this map is coming along nicely. :D Also, don't forget to enter the plot contest for this map! We're still looking for submissions. If you need to know the details of this contest, see my last post, or see the first post in this topic. The contest rules are under the section for A Tragedy Forgotten Part 2. And since it's been long enough, I'm going to release some hints with this new sneak peak.
Hint 1: Look not only to the past, but also to the future.
Hint 2: If you think you might know the answer, you probably don't.

He speaks the truth. :P I was too tired to make a post... I decided to end the plot contest early because we weren't getting any more entries, and the wait was just pointless. Mpete's entry was as follows:
"hmmm, the only female mentioned in part 1 is Anatasia and the other one looks a lot like Leoros so...
maybe he starts to remember a conversation as he grabs the sword(dark beam?)
the spirit possibly corrupted by the power of the sword defends it (to the death?)
maybe some questions if it was worth it to kill him?"
It's pretty close, but not dead on. I'll wait to let you see what he got right when the map comes out.

too.... much...... Part 2 is nearly completed, and we have decent starts on parts 3 4 and 5. We had to do the sort of all at once because PeterPower has to leave soon, so we wanna get all graphics stuff taken care of now.

You killed a physical manifestation of the dragon, but Pandemalzu's spirit is still very much alive. And that was from feeding off a small underground magma pit... wait till you see him in his cave! With 15 fire crystals to feed off of. :D

I ran into a slight setback in ATF2, for anyone who was expecting the map to be released last night. Some drones were killing anti creeper that was used for a trigger, effectively fooling the game into thinking you had dug up terrain before you had.

I'm putting the finishing touches on ATF2 right now! They're all very complicated maps, so they take a while. :P Parts 3, 4, and 5 are started as well, so those shouldn't take as long. We did them all as a group to get art and stuff out of the way before PeterPower left.

I need to tone down those bottom emitters..... before those break loose, it's doable. maybe even fields to keep them contained where they won't cause issues... Also, there's something wrong with the combination lock.

I had the very great pleasure of testing ATF Part 2, and I'd like to relieve you all by saying that you should feel free to let your expectations go ridiculously high. The beginning was an excitingly desperate struggle, and the ending is...well, uh...broken. But fear not! Ebon Heart has already nearly fixed it! In fact, I don't want to raise any false hopes, but the map seems to be nearly done!

I didn't fix it... per-say. I just removed the combination lock altogether. It was too confusing, and didn't really add anything... plus it was really finicky. So instead, I have an even more devious concoction in store. :D

I'm staying off the forums this weekend until ATF2 is done, but I came back real quick to make an announcement. If you want to see how ATF2 is progressing, send me an email at EbonHeartCW@gmail.com and I can send you a link to a screen sharing program that'll let you see what I'm doing on the map. I wasn't happy with the boss fight... it was a fairly anti climactic ending, so i'm actually redoing it to hopefully make it more epic. :D
(no, sharing my gmail account set up specifically for creeper world is not giving away personal information. I will rage if you sensor it.)
link taken down. and I'm about ready for bed. send me an email tomorrow and I can set up another link

Odd, I was monitoring the old subspace channels this morning.  Normally, there's nothing but static... But the strangest message just came through.  The message seems to have a transmission ID, but it's a bit garbled.  All I received for the transmitter ID was:  "E_on H__r_"

Message follows:
--
Good news everyone! I am receiving a prophecy from the creeper world gods. It appears to be about the future of this adventure. I will relay the message to you now.

6#+* !3#%% 2#=8 #+~ 6#+* !3#%% @2*
9&5 #! $?2 538 !#=8, 38 14%% +?5 ~48
6?28 @3#%%8+=8! #1#45, ~? +?5 ~8+*
$?2 6#+* #+~ 6#+* # ~2#=?+ !3#%% $%*

# 382? !3#%% 6?&2+, #+~ # 6#4~8+ !3#%% ~48.

The message seems to have been garbled. I'm sorry, I've done all I can. Perhaps you will find a hint as to the meaning of this message later on.

That was kind of my mistake. He originally had, "out" and I had thought it was supposed to be, "and" so I had him change it. We were both wrong. lol.

EDIT: I had presumed it was a mistake in my code, and the grammar error in his version bugged me. Glad to know I got the code right, though.

It's fairly simple once you know how it works. Each symbol corresponds to a letter, you start with the most obvious words like "and" and you can use the letters you find there for the longer words. That said, I would never have the patience of Echo to crack the whole code.

Hey, ATF2 is done and out there. And it's amazing. :D sadly, I'm on the move right now, and it will be at least 3 days before I can submit the map at a minimum, but probably longer. So last night, before I left, I gave the map to Shroom_Agent to submit. If you message him, he can send you the map so you can try to get a score. It needs one score and he can submit it. Does anyone want to help? It will be appreciated.

We can call off the hunt for scores, I found a wifi network. And I'm about done and the map is going to be submitted soon. The final battle could go either way at this point. lol.
EDIT: dominated, even with a stray energy ball demolishing most of my reactors on the left side. (drone made a hole, and a bullet punched through) The map is in the que now and awaiting approval... big file.  ;D

So... I'm not dead. In fact, I've been working on the third part of this series. I've posted some pictures of a very very early version of the game.

picture 1: There's a lot of things to note as soon as you open this map. For example, survival pods. You instantly know that this will be a problem. They cost 100 energy to save, and you have to do so quickly before the fire kills them. It is also important to note the parts of the buildings slated for destruction. But fear not, for you can combat this. The third feature is an anti creeper well that pumps "water" throughout the entire village. By digging through walls where the pipes connect, or by building shields and overflowing the pipes, you can douse the evil fires! Speaking of fires, look at the bottom of the map. There are 2 wizards, and 4 orbs. The wizards protect the orbs with creeper, and wizard on the right will try to destroy your buildings. The wizard on the left is one to be worried about.

picture 2: Not a whole lot to see... my stuff is getting destroyed, and I've built a shield in the upper right to burst the pipe and cover the buildings with enough water to ensure that I won't die.

picture 3: The wizard on the left comes into play, and wouldyalookatthat?! Drones. Who would have guessed?

picture 4: You're probably telling yourself, "That looks way too easy." Well... you would be right. Just wait... >:D

future: The wizards will have some cool field programming, mostly dealing with hurling fireballs everywhere. But very offensive things that will attempt to destroy the well. Notice that the solid terrain that makes up the well has emitters in it. If those get loose, you will have problems, since they will pretty much negate the entirety of your water supply in an instant. So protect that at all costs! The wizards will also attempt to hurl large fireballs at the weak spots in your walls that will be created by attempts by the gateways. This can be deadly for your poor survivors. Nothing is set in stone right now, but I have a concept down. This map definitely has the ability to meet the same high standards of the previous 2.

I had thought that you died. You have been missing for a while. I will be excited to play your map when you get it finished. The others have been great.

I've been a busy person. :P I'm doing the best I can with what free time I have. And no, not all of my free time goes to cw2, sorry I have a life outside of creeper world.

Don't we all, and don't we know it. You know, if you're going to make a series, next time, even though the first 2 maps were nice (I am still struggling to beat the second part actually), maybe they should all be made before releasing any of them so time is less of a factor to consider.

Or keep doing them how you are doing them. If you would have waited until the whole series was done, there is a good chance we would have never been able to play them.

exactly... I'm kind of running into a wall on the 3rd map, but maps 4 and 5 should be fun. (though mind-bogglingly complicated) If Part 4 has field-related-lagg-issues, I just give up.

Give up ,and you might look as bad to a lot of people as the Firefly TV show series. (maybe not to me, but you may to plenty of others). It cancled before finishing its first season.

I won't give up, don't worry... though I may have gotten addicted to a game called League of Legends that seems to have killed what little free time I tend to have now adays. :P

Don't blame those who made the series, blame the network that cancelled them.

They completed the series in a movie and released unexplored backstory in graphic novels - the makers of the series didn't abandon it.

I'm back from the dead!~~~~~~~~
And with that comes more work on this dead series. So far I have given up on ATF3 and moved straight to ATF4 because reasons.
Part 4 is going to feature a boss battle with the dragon from the first map, and I'm working with two basic ideas for it. Both of these are very rough and would be tweaked hugely, of course.
Idea 1:
Spoiler

This features a large open map for the dragon to fly around. It can fly into/out of any of those fire portals around the edges. Reactors in the walls give you power if you can manage to build beacons and keep them alive. The emitters in the middle purely feed creeper to the dragon, which spits fireballs and summons drones as it comes out of portals. The numbers represent a possible order.

Idea 2:
Spoiler

This is a less open map with more to fight through. There would be a segmented level of some kind (with gimmicks in every section I'm sure). The dragon has less options, and will go between the sections ruining your progress and potentially forcing a hasty retreat. After you've taken out all the emitters the dragon will stop being fueled and can be killed.

Both of these can be tweaked a lot, as I said. Also, a note on this fight: After the dragon goes leaves the map, it will likely stay off for 5-10 seconds, or maybe more, during which time you will have a visual cue of which portal it is coming out of next. This will probably be bubbling creeper, or even something as simple as an arrow. Regardless, I'm going to try to keep as much randomness out of this fight as possible, as this has a tendency of ruining every single boss made in this game. I solemnly swear the dragon will be predictable and you will be able to deal with him without studying the map in advance.

No I super died again. But I did promise that I would post some beta versions of parts 3 and 4 of this series. They'll just be less refined.
One of the big issues with continuing this series is that part 3 will NOT live up to the expectations of the first 2 maps no matter what I do.
