Hi all!

This topic will discuss my three CW1 map series:

WARNING: the comments of my maps contain tips & hints how to solve them. Don't read them if you don't like spoilers, as I wasn't able to hide all of them by using the spoiler button.

The maps of each series don't follow a consecutive story line, so they can be played individually as well. Please feel free to comment, criticize, compliment or complain. Feedback will be reflected in future maps.

Title:
Nice Job 1: The Hydraulic Engineer
Difficulty:
Hard
Creeper type:
Land only
Remarks:
Can be played laid back. It takes just one blaster to defend your initial position, but a few more to finish the map. Use of some storage is recommended.
Description:
26% of The Netherlands (also known as Holland or the low lands) is located below sea level. Windmills were used to create land out of sea. As the highest 'mountain' is only 322 meters, flooding is a constant threat to this flat country protected by dunes and dykes.

Today you are an hydraulic engineer, safely operating from Germany. On the map you'll see Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague and Utrecht (the four largest cities) and some smaller towns.

Your job: save the people in the southern province called Zealand. During the flood in 1953 this went terribly wrong. After that activate all windmills and help out the friendly Dutch population. When done, please pick up the message from our Queen.

Note: by law new nuclear reactors are not allowed in The Netherlands, but you can use the only one we have and those in Germany and Belgium.

Title:
Nice Job 2: The Athlete
Difficulty:
Expert Only
Creeper type:
Land & Air
Remarks:
Normally you are after the creeper; this time the creeper is after you! Beat Mr. Creeper and Mr. Spore in a quick head to head battle.
Description:
Today you are an athlete. On the program is the 400 meters hurdles. You are up against Mr. Creeper and Mr. Spore. In sports only the first place counts, so do a nice job.

"On your marks...."

"Get set...."

"Go!"

Title:
Nice Job 3: The Farmer
Difficulty:
Medium
Creeper type:
Land & Air
Remarks:
You'll be under attack from all sides. Don't advance too fast or too slowly. Positioning of weapons and choice of upgrades will make a difference.
Description:
You are a farmer in the dry lands of Africa. Today you have some trouble with your irrigation system, donated by the United Nations. Unfortunately you are located in its water basin.

Your job: quickly power all water pumps and save your family working on the plains.

And oh, don't forget about the swarms of grasshoppers; your family is rather allergic to them. Better use some insecticides.

Title:
Nice Job 4: The Plumber
Difficulty:
Expert Only
Creeper type:
Land only
Remarks:
No tricks or luck required, just skill and persistence. Definitely the hardest map I've made (and will make). I hope you don't mind a few tries to pick up necessary items (sacrifice some collectors), find a good starting position and build up your initial economy. Your first attempt WILL fail. Tips on request (see comments).
Description:
Today you are a plumber and you have been called for a job:

- Check the tab above the sink.
- Check the shower.
- Check the gooseneck of the toilet.
- Check all drains to the sewer.
- Fix the two leaks in the sewer.
- Mop the mess with Cillit Bang lime power cleaner.

Unfortunately you were clumsy and dropped your tool box, so your equipment is all over the bathroom.

Title:
Nice Job 5: The Clockmaker
Difficulty:
Hard
Creeper type:
Land & Air
Remarks:
NEW: First map with automatic spore direction indicator, so no more surprises! Not that hard, but you'll need quite some blasters to be able to cross the clock. May be a little CPU intensive in the final stage.
Description:
You are a clockmaker and today you received an unusual clock for repair. It got wet and it is not water resistant. Luckily you start next to the battery compartment (1.5 Volts).

The main clock indicates the seconds passed. The small one on the bottom right displays the minutes this repair is taking you.

The gauge on the top left seems to be a weather sensor. It shows from which direction the rain will fall. As long as you keep it powered, it will show you useful information!

You are not sure about the gauge on the top right. It looks like a count down device....

Please repair this clock before it's completely filled with water!

Title:
Nice Job 6: The Travel Agent
Difficulty:
Hard
Creeper type:
Land only
Remarks:
You start with plenty of space to build your initial economy. After that you'll have to cross some tough mountain ranges to reach your goal. Can be played laid back, unless you go for the highscore.
Description:
As tourism is a growing business in Russia, you started your own travel agency in Moscow.

Today you have a booking from a wealthy customer who likes to visit the following places:
- The geysers of Iceland
- The green hills of Ireland
- The soukhs of Morocco
- The northern lights of Norway
- The tundra's of Siberia
- The mob scene of Sicily
- The beaches of Cyprus
- The old civilizations of Mesopotamia (once between Iran and Iraq)

Please do a nice job and plan this trip efficiently. You can ask the branch offices in Berlin, London, Madrid, Rome, Athens and Istanbul for help if you need to.

Title:
Nice Job 7: The Supervisor
Difficulty:
Hard
Creeper type:
Land only
Remarks:
You have enough space to build, but you will need it all. A little planning ahead will make your job easier. Don't underestimate the amount of energy you'll need. Have fun and please leave a comment if you (dis)liked it!
Description:
Today you are the supervisor of a swimming pool.

Besides a normal bath you facilitate a jacuzzi and a wild water slide.

It's your job to inspect all baths for safety. You may have to remove some water to accomplish your task. Warning: this job will cost you a lot of energy!

But first please help the little boy who lost his mother.

Title:
Nice Job 8: The Lifeguard
Difficulty:
Medium
Creeper type:
Land only
Remarks:
- 536 emitters including: 4 with 1000 intensity, 28 with 750 intensity and 40 with 500 intensity.
- 3 little children lost at sea.
- 1 person who can help them: YOU! What are you waiting for???
Description:
Today you are a lifeguard on a beautiful sandy beach.

Three children left the swimming area, indicated by the buoys. They got surprised by the tide, but were able to hang on to some cliffs. Luckily all children wear a safety ring, but how long will these last?

Do a nice job and safe the children in time. After that put up a flag on the southern hill, indicating the dangerous conditions.

Title:
Nice Job 9: The Explorer
Difficulty:
Hard
Creeper type:
Land only
Remarks:
Time to act fast! First defend your initial position before you will be able to advance. After that it will be tough, but pretty straight forward. I've tried to create a different look for this map; please let me know if you like it.
Description:

WOW! You've finally found it!

For many years you've been an explorer, searching in the dense forests of South America. This must be your lucky day!

You arrived at the outer walls of the ancient city you've studied for so long. Many treasures must be hidden here. And even more important: eternal fame!

Suddenly your hear a strange sibilant sound in the far distance. When you pay more attention, the sound seems to get closer every 15 seconds....

You quickly decide to take the two closest towers, before they take you. Damn! Why do you never get an easy job?

Title:
Nice Job 10: The Teacher
Difficulty:
Hard
Creeper type:
Land only
Remarks:
This time the start will be easier as you only need 2 blasters to defend the teacher's desk. All emitters can be capped by placing blasters on the heads of the children. Believe me, they deserve it.... Have fun!
Description:

Although you rather elaborate on Einstein's theories (see blackboard), good jobs are hard to get, so you are a teacher at an elementary school today.

Please make sure these children are learning something instead of annoying you.

Although the kids can be a real pain, never forget that each child has something special to offer!

Remarks:
Quite hard, but rated 'Expert Only' because you will also need to hurry to be able to save the princesses. You'll need all your skills (but no tricks) to bring this map to a good end. Tips on request (see comments).
Description:

Title:
Nice Job 12: The Collector
Difficulty:
Hard
Creeper type:
Land only
Remarks:
During the initial phase you will have to retreat after picking up the items of your preference. Defending this position will be the hardest part and might cost you a few tries. Once established you'll be able to advance rather fast. From that moment moving to the 2nd page will be the toughest job.
Description:
You are not only a Creeper World addict, but also a dedicated collector. The CW items have become your collector items that you store in a special book. One day this collection might be worth a lot of money!

Today is a happy day; you've finally found the Thor tech and your collection is complete!

Emitters can't be stored without being capped!

Title:
Nice Job 13: The Soccer Player
Difficulty:
Hard
Creeper type:
Land & Air
Remarks:
Only 12 days left till the World Championships of the most popular sport on Earth: soccer! Now combine your soccer skills with your CW skills and make it to the next round. Just 11 players up against a fearless opponent; will you be able to score a goal?
Description:
For once you start off with a completely green field. You can still smell the freshly mowed grass of your home stadium, where you will play your first match as a soccer player for the Red Raiders.

Today your team is up against the Blue Bullies, feared for their relentless style of play.

Your coach, Mr. Drone, quickly gives you the last instructions for your new job:

- You will be playing mid-field today.
- First play one-on-one. Later on you might want to change your strategy.
- Beware, defenders are always stronger than attackers.
- Make sure you substitute the two players in the dug-out.
- After 30 seconds the enemy coach will start shouting very loud and will keep doing so every half minute; don't let it hold you back.
- Finally, score a goal. One is enough if we keep our defences tight enough.
- You can always ask me for support.
- When it takes the crowd too long before they see some action, they will start throwing trash on the field. Make sure they don't hit you.

Good luck and don't disappoint me! We've paid quite some money for you....

Title:
Nice Job 14: The Squad Leader
Difficulty:
Medium
Creeper type:
Air only
Remarks:
After a couple of rather hard maps, this time a quick and fun map suitable for every player. Please save the president of the United States of America and 7 other world leaders from the terrorist attacks!
Description:
You feel honoured, as you were given the lead over an anti-terrorist squad. But you also feel a bit nervous, because today is the big day....

The president of the United States of America will travel by Air Force One to the annual G8 meeting, accompanied by 7 other world leaders. You are responsible for their safety during this flight.

As you walk through the airport terminal, you suddenly hear somebody laugh:
"Hahaha! I have placed quite a lot of semtex. This will be tough for them, heheh!"

You look around and notice a guy with a laptop, staring at his screen. Without any hesitation you take him into custody, as you are well aware of the danger of this plastic explosive. "I have heard everything you said about the semtex, so don't deny it!"

"What about the SAM techs? I'm UpperKEES and just creating a Creeper World map!"

"Yeah, yeah.... that's what they all say! Now where did you put the semtex?"

Nice Job 15: The Gravedigger

Remarks:
10 emitters trying to kill you, 6 emitters trying to save you. You've never been so close to death as today. But hey, it's your job, so you can handle that. Right? Try to use all available space as efficient as possible; this will certainly help you finishing faster.
Description:
Finally, the last grave for today....

Your new job as a gravedigger is pretty tough as it involves a lot of hard work. You've just let the coffin down when you realize how little space you must have in such a small case.

At that moment a powerful gust pushes you forward. You fall down into the grave onto the coffin. When you look up you see nothing, but you hear a frightening dark voice saying:

"HAHAHA! You buried me alive, now you will experience the same thing! Die!"

Remarks:
The creeper may flow a little differently than expected at first glance. You will have enough space to start building, but how many techs and upgrades are you able to collect before you have to set up your defences?
Description:
Exploring caves has always been your passion. Now you're getting paid to study the biological life forms it even got better.

Today you've entered a cave with huge stalactites hanging down from the ceiling and enormous stalagmites raising up from the floor.

The cave doesn't seem to be very stable; big rocks might be falling down occasionally.

Nice Job 17: The Gamer
CW:US
(http://www.greenfunder.com/icon_trophy.png)   (An easy version of) this map has been selected for CW:User Space! Are you able to finish the hard edition as well?
Difficulty:
Hard
Creeper type:
Land only
Remarks:
Ever dreamt of making money by playing games? This is your chance! Don't worry if you're building with a slight deficit for a while; the few shots your blasters can fire should be enough to maintain your position. You might need a few restarts to get it all right. Recognize the map within this map?
Description:
Why didn't you think of that before? Gaming is what you like, so why not earn your money playing games all day?

So you paid $10 to subscribe for the OCWC (Open Creeper World Championships).
You can earn $10,000 by winning this tournament.

You went to bed early this time and you feel confident at the moment you take your seat between thousands of other gamers. You even recognize a few familiar faces from the photographs at the KnuckleCracker forums.

"Hey Spiffen! Good luck man!"

Title:
Nice Job 18: The Chemist
Difficulty:
Medium
Creeper type:
Land only
Remarks:
This map is probably on the edge between 'Medium' and 'Hard', but I've chosen for 'Medium' as you never have to engage the creeper in the parts where it's deep and intensive, which makes this map definitely easier than my hard rated maps. Put on your lab coat and enjoy!
Description:
When you arrive at your chemistry laboratory, you notice that your set up looks fine, but your formulas are all over the place.

Because this is your first day as a chemist you really need them. Fortunately your chemicals are still in their test tubes and the beaker.

Please use all chemicals, collect the formulas and light the Bunsen burner before you get killed in that Erlenmeyer flask!

Title:
Nice Job 19: The Paleontologist
Difficulty:
Hard
Creeper type:
Land only
Remarks:
You'll have a rather easy start, but as the emitters increase slightly during the first 15 minutes you won't be able to just sit and wait. Can be played laid back though. Have some prehistoric fun!

Description:
For weeks you have been escavating the fossile remains of 5 prehistoric animals.

As an experienced paleontologist you realize how lucky you are to find so many different species at one site.

Finally you and your team are finished and all creatures seem to be perfectly intact:

- a Tyrannosaurus Rex
- a Pterodactylus
- a Stegosaurus
- an Apatosaurus (also known as Brontosaurus)
- a Trilobite

At the moment you take your camera to make some pictures, the animals turn out to be less fossilized than you expected....

Title:
Nice Job 20: The Snake Charmer
Difficulty:
Expert Only
Creeper type:
Land only
Remarks:
Probably between 'Hard' and 'Expert Only', but definitely harder than my other hard rated maps. All emitters can be capped, only the snake eyes will free themselves after a while. Do you dare to go in between or rather play it save and go around?

Description:
Because you needed even more excitement than you experienced during your previous jobs, you applied for the vacancy of snake charmer.

"Show me what you've got!", says the owner of a Thai snake farm.
"Are you ready to show your skills?"

Before you can answer him he shows you a room with some giant snakes.
When you take your magic flute out of your bag the door is closed behind you.

Nice Job 21: The Diver
Difficulty:
Hard
Creeper type:
Land only
Remarks:
All techs available from the start, plenty of space to build, six upgrades, no spores, each emitter can be capped by just one blaster and no emitters near (a moveable) Odin City. Easy? No, Hard. Keep breathing!

Description:
You hear on your marine radio that a sailing yacht has sunk close to your location. The ship has broken in two parts and has become a wreck.

Valuable goods are scattered around on the ocean bed. Wreck diving is your specialty, so you decide to give it a shot.

Enjoy your dive! I hope you'll have enough oxygen to make it all the way down....

Nice Job 22: The Artist
Difficulty:
Expert Only
Creeper type:
Land only
Remarks:
I don't expect many scores for this map, as only the true masters of the game will be able to finish it. Again no tricks required, but you might want to have a look at the comments for some tips (as I don't have enough room here). Enjoy!

Description:
You are a special kind of artist, as you love the combination of math, geometrical shapes and art.

You're inspired by your great example: Maurits Cornelis Escher.  This famous Dutch artist is well known for his repetitive patterns and impossible 3D images that deceive the human eye.

Looking at one of his bird creations you get the impression these birds are looking back at you....

This time Escher isn't fooling you! Better get ready for the toughest battle you've ever played!

Title:
Nice Job 23: The Train Driver
Difficulty:
Hard
Creeper type:
Land only
Remarks:
My last geographical map in the Nice Job series. You'll have to figured out how to accomplish a save initial position. Every lake, sea and ocean will start filling up after 1 second, except for the tiny lake in the heart of China which will start after 1 minute to give you some extra time.

Description:
Why not the longest railway in the world? This is what you asked yourself when you applied for a job as train driver on the Trans-Siberian Express.

The Russian railway actually consists out of 5 main lines:
- Trans-Siberian line (northern route to Vladivostok)
- Ural line (southern route to Vladivostok)
- Baikal Amur line (a strategic alternative to the Trans-Siberian line)
- Trans-Mongolian line (via Mongolia to Beijing)
- Trans-Manchurian line (via Manchuria to Beijing)

Please make sure each line makes a stopover at the desired locations. These include historic places like: Saint Petersburg, Moscow, Perm, Omsk, Tomsk, Krasnoyarsk, Novosibirsk, Irkutsk and Ulanbator.

Unfortunately the drone tech got stuck in the permafrost of northern Siberia, so it will take some effort to obtain it.

Nice Job 24: The Astronomer
Difficulty:
Medium
Creeper type:
Land & Air
Remarks:
Probably the easiest map in the Nice Job series. All techs available from the start, a lot of space to build your structures and enough time to prepare yourself. Better use it well, because the existence of our entire solar system is at stake!

Description:
On a warm summer evening in 2061 you take your state-of-the-art telescope to study the return of the comet Halley.

When you were a kid and first saw this comet by the naked eye in 1986, you decided to become an astronomer. And so you did; you even became world's most famous astrophysicist, advising many influential world leaders.

Finally you will be able to see this phenomenon again. With your mini Hubble telescope you are able to observe our solar system by daylight.

While searching the sky you suddenly notice something odd: what is happening to the sun? It seems to be growing! Is the end of the world coming sooner than expected?

You quickly call the international space station to warn them for this dangerous threat. Hopefully they will be able to do something about it....

Title:
Nice Job 25: The Developer
Difficulty:
Expert Only
Creeper type:
Land only
Remarks:
The last map in the Nice Job series and dedicated to a developer we all know: Virgil Wall.

Ever considered creating your own game? This map will take you through the six phases of the software development life cycle.

Probably the nicest job in the (creeper) world, but also one of the hardest.

Description:
*** This map is dedicated to Virgil Wall, the one and only developer of Creeper World and a very nice person. Many thanks for creating such a unique and great game! ***

After attempting 24 jobs you give it one more try. Because you always loved gaming, but weren't able to make money out of this (see NJ-17: The Gamer (http://knucklecracker.com/forums/index.php?topic=3556)), you decided to become a developer of computer games.

However developing games is not just coding and creating nice graphics. You'll have to go through the complete development life cycle. This map will show you how it works.

You will have to go through the following phases:
1. Analysis
2. Design
3. Implementation
4. Testing
5. Deployment
6. Maintenance

During each phase you will have to think about your customers/users/players. If you don't, your project is doomed. Also don't forget it's a development life cycle; when not executed correctly you're back at square one. Now, let's make a game!

Why did you place that message so far away? I hate it when you've obviously won a map and then still have to fight a long way.

But for the rest I liked the map, it's like you said easy but still offers a challenge. Also I like the accurate map of the Netherlands, but it seems like you've already drawn Easters and Western Flevoland who were only created in 1957 and 1968, while the date of the flood was 1953.

EDIT: Forget about the Flevoland thingies, didn't read the description right.

I do believe that changing the external file name will not have an impact on the map's UID. So feel free to rename it to something that wil not bomb out on your computer.

I just finished the map myself (in the 2nd attempt :P) and was able to post a score.

I noticed the hyphen '-' in the file name was replaced after uploading by an underscore '_', but normally that shouldn't cause any trouble. I will prevent this anyway with future maps.

I have Vista .

I manage to downloade the map after i change the name ,
i give it an try now to see if i manage to post an score .

And it would be nice if you had the same name for your map ,
the name of the map is different from what you see here and there =P
( If you understand what i mean )
Title: Re: Nice Job! - Map series by UpperKEES
Post by: UpperKEES on April 01, 2010, 07:21:00 PM
I use Vista as well, so you should be fine.

The names I use are actually the same, but I am limited in the number of characters I can use. Because of this I have to shorten the internal name to "NJ-1: The Engineer". All future maps will have this prefix, so they'll group nicely together when you sort on 'map title' in the custom map screen of CW.
Title: Re: Nice Job! - Map series by UpperKEES
Post by: SPIFFEN on April 01, 2010, 07:37:31 PM
Then use that as the map name for the map and the file plz ,
maybe skip the : if that might mess it up .

Then use the full name in the description ,
if you cant manage to make the name short enought .
Title: Re: Nice Job! - Map series by UpperKEES
Post by: UpperKEES on April 01, 2010, 08:12:23 PM
Like I said, there is no colon ':' in the file name. A colon in the internal title is no problem; many other maps use that. Others have no problem playing this map.

Future titles will be shorter anyway (as you might have seen), so names won't be different.
Title: Re: Nice Job! - Map series by UpperKEES
Post by: SPIFFEN on April 01, 2010, 08:38:53 PM
Hmm then i guess i have something on my computer that mess this up =P

Because this is what i see : Nice Job 1: The Hydraulic Engineer

And after i deleted it in my downloade , ( i used : save as )
i manage to downloade it to the game ( and my computer ) .

But the name in the game has :
there its called : NJ-1: The Engineer

So i dont know why it does'nt work for me ,
maybe it because im from Norway =P
( Or because im SPIFFEN =D )
Title: Re: Nice Job! - Map series by UpperKEES

Oh, strange. The name of the file I uploaded was: Nice Job 1 - The Hydraulic Engineer.cwm and the title was: Nice Job 1: The Hydraulic Engineer. Colons can never be used in file names (that's not different on my computer ;)).

Thanks for the feedback anyway, I'll try to avoid the hyphens in the file name as well.

It's just that once you've secured the totems on the Netherlands you're sure you've won and it's only a matter of time, every map has a breaking point where you get the upper hand against the creeper, I just hate it that you know that you've won but still have to build a lot of blasters and engage a sea of creeper.
But that's just my opinion I'm sure there are people that like to cap all emitters who would be angry if you wouldn't have placed that artifact there.

And it doesn't make sence that your queen is going to the middle of the North Sea ;), what's wrong with just a city-trip to Belgium.
Title: Re: Nice Job! - Map series by UpperKEES
Post by: UpperKEES on April 02, 2010, 01:02:15 AM
Well, actually you haven't 'won' this map once the totems have been activated, as the amount of energy available is limited. Capping the emitters without enough resources might cause everything to collapse (as happened to me before). You don't need to cap all emitters by the way, as long as you can create a save path to the top left corner. Just beware when the drones start refueling.... ;)

She normally goes to England, so this is the closest point. Especially you should know how dangerous Belgium is! ;)

But obviously I wanted the player to get there without putting a 'windmill' in the North Sea.

Edit: response to Sqaz's edit.

Well, atleast Belgium doesn't flood when it rains a bit.

EDIT: By the way, Londen the place to be for your queen is way lower than the message, I think the closest point to England would be a little bit above the Belgium coast.

I thought you said you posted a score?

It is too late now, but next time, after you post the score, if you click the "Online" button next to the map name, you will get a message saying that the map does not yet exist in the database and it will give you the map uid.  If you save that uid, then Virgil would be able to troubleshoot why the map score is not appearing once the map has been approved. Although I know it works in some instances, I  know I have tested it with test maps.

Yep, I posted a score, but didn't see it. No problem, I'll submit a new one (cause I know I was 15 seconds faster during testing anyway). ;)

Thanks for the info about the map uid!
Title: Re: Nice Job! - Map series by UpperKEES
Post by: UpperKEES on April 10, 2010, 10:40:41 AM
As Miss Melissa was the only one besides myself to submit a score till now, this map (http://knucklecracker.com/creeperworld/mapcomments.php?page=&sort=&author=&id=1416) probably is a little harder than I expected (I even considered rating it as medium).

Therefore a hint: you can easily pick up the prebuild blasters by just building one relay. These blasters can be used to protect the connection between the totems.

I really liked this one, it took me a few tries to get my strategy right, and I found it very challenging.

However I think it's more Hard than Medium as I found it very hard to build 6 blasters in time.

I can imagine you had a hard time when you tried to build 6 blasters (and succeeded!).

Quote from: UpperKEES on April 16, 2010, 07:18:48 AM
Positioning of weapons and choice of upgrades will make a difference.

I only build 4 blasters and go for 3 upgrades before the walls break. With the right positioning and choice it won't be hard at all.

To be honest I thought it wouldn't be possible to build 6 blasters in time without suffering from a severe deficit and even being able to build a few SAMs in time, so all credits to you!

For the first spore wave I didn't build any Sams, the blasters were enough to hold them back (and I had the luck that the on that wasn't destroyed landed on one of those islands where the survivors used to be)

After the first wave, the rest came pretty easy once you get a few reactors and more SAMs as the waves get stronger

Overall, I liked it, good challenge
Title: Re: Nice Job! - Map series by UpperKEES

Heheh, funny how everybody plays it differently. I don't build reactors at all for instance, only blasters (first 4, later 2 more to move them closer to the emitters), some SAMs (that I rotate) and collectors of course. I have wondered however if I should try it with some reactors to finish it even quicker.
Title: Re: Nice Job! - Map series by UpperKEES
Post by: Vexsin on April 17, 2010, 04:27:18 PM
i'm able to get 3 upgrades right away (blaster, reactor, sam) and 6 blasters up before the walls break, and from there, surviving the first missile attack, then I can just make a few reactors and cap off all the emitters.

quality over quantity, nothing against spiffen but UpperKEES works to make each of his maps very unique from one another as well as playing with some of the mechanics of how the map will work with the emitters and the landscape.
Title: Re: Nice Job! - Map series by UpperKEES
Post by: UpperKEES on May 19, 2010, 02:13:57 PM
Thanks! :)

That's indeed what I try to do, but let's not compare maps or map makers, as we all make something different. Spiffen's maps are also liked by many people, maybe even more than mine. Not everybody is looking for the same thing, so let's be glad that so much variety is offered here at the custom map page.

I tend to make my maps quite hard (maybe too hard sometimes), because I can't bring myself to creating a map that's not a challenge to me. After finishing it I often make it even a little harder when I found some weak spots. Consequence is that not everyone will be able to play them till the end or that players even quit after failing the first time within a couple of minutes. Too bad, I can't please everybody. When I fail playing a map (or lose too much time according to my standards), I'll try again and again until I find the best approach. I realize though that I can't expect the same amount of patience from everybody, as most people probably just play a couple of quick maps for fun and don't like a couple of restarts or spending 15 minutes just figuring out how to place the first 10 collectors efficiently. That's all fine with me, as long as they don't give my map 1 star because they weren't able to finish it in their first attempt....

I like UpperKEES maps alot , he's maps are up with the top of all maps .

Its hard to say what maps are the best maps , because all players like different things and like different maps .

And there are some players that has only made some few maps that is very good ,
Karsten75 has made 2 maps or so , but those maps are spesial ,
Hi has made some lession maps that is spesial also ,
and virgil who made this game , that has made all this possibel .

And there is alot of others out there who has made alot of good maps .

And i try to makes maps that can be finnished by everyone ,
and inspire others to make maps too .

There's one underneath each item and they get progressively stronger (from top left to bottom right). Because you can place a blaster in between 2-4 pools you can cap them rather easily.

ok this might be in bad taste but when i thought of it i couldn't stop laughing.  here'e one for ya, "oil spill container"  the description could read something like "while the workers to deal with their problems in the real world let's solve this issue creeper world style'.  maybe a few survivor pods to be animals to save and you'd get upgrades for saving each one, then the inspectors would require  you to connect to each totem to pass the new inspection to make sure things are contained.  Just something I thought i'd put out there, after all you are talking about a soccer player map that you bumped back to go in time with the world series. (If I had any experience with the map editor at all I'd give it a shot myself)

Seriously ever since the oil spill i've been thinking 'it's practically a real life case of creeper world'.

Thanks for the idea, but I know of 2 players who already did something with this:

- Exxon Valdez (http://knucklecracker.com/creeperworld/mapcomments.php?id=1180) by Mothwentbad

The Soccer Player will be published today, but I first have to set a score myself....

Edit: and there's another oil map in queue.

Both Germany and the US play in white as far as I know.

I'm very happy how the artist turned out. It is inspired by the work of a famous Dutch artist and will make me recant my statement that I wouldn't create a map as hard as The Plumber (http://knucklecracker.com/forums/index.php?topic=2804).

It's a result of a discussion I had with mthw2vc about the use of mortars, so I wanted to create 2 maps that really needed them (very hard to replace by blasters). The Diver will be the other one.

Awesome looking, will play in a few minutes!
He he he , tucatana was easy for me!
And question, is the developer the last map in this series?
Title: Re: Nice Job! - Map series by UpperKEES
Post by: UpperKEES on June 12, 2010, 08:36:46 AM
My first attempts on Tucana failed miserably half a year ago and when I finally beat it, it took me about 45 minutes. After improving myself and trying again I managed in about 9 minutes.

I also failed on my own map (after tweaking it) to get the initial build up right, and finally beat it in a little more than 19 minutes. You tell me which one is harder.... ;) (Post a score!) It's a kind of tribute to Tucana, the map that made me learn most about CW.

And yes, 'The Developer' will be the last map in the series, so 8 more to go. They are all finished and it will take 4 more weeks to release them. I can always change my mind however and insert a map somewhere in between. The Developer will stay the last map though, as it is dedicated to Virgil.

NB: next Tuesday 'The Chemist' will be released, based on your idea. :)

I actually planned for a series of 20, that's why I reserved 4 posts. Recently I had to shift a few of them backwards to be able to fit 25 of them in 4 posts, so the fourth post will contain 7 of them. Now let's just hope I don't hit the maximum number of characters per post.... :P

I've added a new map: Bored To Death (http://knucklecracker.com/forums/index.php?topic=3953).

This map is not part of any series and isn't representative for my other maps. It's the exact opposite of my style, so don't let this one scare you off. It's a statement against boring maps; play it and you'll understand. Or even better: don't play it, as I want this to be the map with the longest completion time (without the extensive use of decaying walls). If you dislike boring maps as well, please rate this map with 1 star! *

Title:
Bored To Death
Difficulty:
Expert Only
Creeper type:
Land & Air (but only as time limit)
Remarks:
I recommend this map only if you like very long fights, because it's boring! It features crazonium, high intensity emitters, Thor and a time limit; things I'm not very fond of myself. Don't play it! If you do so anyway, you'll have 7 minutes to prepare yourself....

Please rate this map with 1 star (see intro text why).

Description:
There I am, fallen asleep with my nose on the keyboard. I could actually be dead.

You know why? Because I just downloaded the most boring map ever and so did you. It features crazonium, Thor, many high intensity emitters and a time limit. People who know me a little bit will understand that this is not my kind of map, but some others seem to love it.

I even bought a pink MacBook to find out if I would like the crazonium better when it matched, but to no avail. Soon I will be drooling out of my mouth onto the laptop, so the slobber will start pouring out of the ventilation grilles and the DVD-player as well.

Please rate it with 1 star, because boring maps shouldn't be rated high, even if you are able to finish it or just survive. Don't give stars for the concept or graphics either please! Boring is boring. Comments are welcome of course, just like requests for hints how to survive. I won't give away how to complete it however and I kindly ask you not to do so at the forums either.

Are you able to finish a little faster than me so it won't be the map with the longest completion time ever? I sure hope you won't!

Because this map is a statement against boring maps. ;) See also my response at the comments page.

Oh, too bad. I'm used to my spell checker correcting me in Firefox, but it seems there's no Map Editor implementation yet.... ;)

Edit: I just noticed I also spelled 'mounth' instead of 'mouth'. Corrected both in the forum text though. Thanks. :)

Edit 2: I just translated 'drewling' into Dutch with Google Translate and it came up with 'kwijlen', which again is translated back into 'drooling'. Is 'drewling' slang? Or is Google Translate even worse than I already thought?

I don't think drewling is a word in English. It could mean "a baby drew", much the same as a duckling is a baby duck, so you could save it for your next fantasy novel. I wonder what a drew looks like.  ???

If you typed your text into your word processor, could you copy and paste it into the map editor? Then you would have the benefit of spell check.

Title:
Hard Art 1: Horsemen
Difficulty:
Expert Only
Creeper type:
Land only
Remarks:
My first map in the Hard Art series. Your initial space is limited and the emitters can be hard to cap due to their location, although their intensity isn't very high. See intro text for more details.

Description:
This is part 1 of a 10 map series called 'Hard Art', inspired by well known artists (from both the real world and the creeper world).

I'll start with my favorite artist, known for his regular divisions of the plane and his 3D illusions.

ARTIST: M.C. Escher
TITLE: Horsemen
MATERIAL: lithograph & woodcut
YEAR: 1946
DIMENSIONS: 37.5 x 29.2 cm

The emitters will increase their frequency after 6, 9 and 12 minutes, but their intensity will stay the same.

Hard Art 2: Envy
Difficulty:
Hard
Creeper type:
Land only
Remarks:
Based on a painting by Miss Melissa.

The more envy (green), the creepier it gets. Make sure the survivors won't become a victim of envy.

Description:
This map is based on a painting by Miss Melissa, probably the best known artist in the Creeper World. Not (yet) because of her works, but just because she's a very good and regular player as well.

Her paintings (for sale!) are very suitable to be translated into a CW map, so I've decided to use another of her works for a future one.

The more envy (green), the creepier it gets. Make sure the survivors won't become a victim of envy.

Title:
Hard Art 3: Color Planes
Difficulty:
Hard
Creeper type:
Land only
Remarks:
This map contains 2 new types of emitters. The first kind will only start when the creeper has reached a certain level and the other type can be prevented from starting by keeping it safe for a couple of minutes. How many emitters will be active? It's all up to you!

Based on a painting by Piet Mondriaan.

Description:
Piet Mondriaan is well known for his art experiments and is considered to be the pioneer of modern art. Most of his works consist of straight lines and only use black, white, grey and the 3 primary colors.

This map is also an experiment, because it contains 2 'new' types of emitters that you can control yourself! (See below for more info.)

Every plane with the same color has its own characteristics:

Level 1, WHITE: contains upgrades or techs.

Level 2, GREY: contains emitters capped by a wall element. These walls will only dissolve when the creeper level above that plane is 2 elevation layers thick, so better prevent that! When the creeper levels go down again (below 2), the wall will stop dissolving, even when the creeper still touches it. Once the wall element has dissolved completely the emitter (intensity 2, interval 0.1 sec) will start.

Level 3, YELLOW: these planes are the same elevation level as the dark grey borders, so they are actually a little larger than it seems.

Level 4, RED: these planes also contain emitters capped by a wall element (except for the one with Odin City). The walls will start to dissolve immediately when the creeper touches them, but the emitters (intensity 8, interval 2 sec) will only start after 8 minutes. If you manage to keep the wall intact during the first 8 minutes, you are safe and the wall won't dissolve any further, thus capping the emitter for the rest of your game!

Level 5, BLUE: these planes contain normal, rather weak emitters (intensity 1, interval 0.5 sec). These are the only emitters that will emit creeper from the start of the game.

So it's up to you how many emitters you will be fighting! You'll notice that mortars and capped emitters don't go very well together, just like with 'normal' emitters, so pick their location carefully.

Please let me know what you think of this concept.

Hard Art 4: Impossible
Difficulty:
Hard
Creeper type:
Land & Air
Remarks:
Is this impossible cube impossible to you? Don't worry too much about the spores; there will be only 1 from each side and you have 6 minutes to prepare. After about 1 hour 6 of them will arrive from the top, but you should be finished by then.

Based on a detail of a work by M.C. Escher.

Description:
M.C. Escher is not only well known for his regular divisions of the plane (like Nice Job 22: The Artist (http://knucklecracker.com/forums/index.php?topic=3787) and Hard Art 1: Horsemen (http://knucklecracker.com/forums/index.php?topic=4032)), but even more for his impossible buildings and other structures. Most of these are rather hard to depict as a CW map, unlike this simple cube (also known as a Necker cube), which is based on a detail from his famous work Belvedere (see below).

Please note that every 3 minutes one spore will arrive from each direction, starting at 6 minutes playing time. Emitters will increase in strength (both intensity and frequency) after 2, 4, 6 and 8 minutes.

Hard Art 5: X-Ray Visor
Difficulty:
Hard
Creeper type:
Land only
Remarks:
This map is based on a painting by Alexander Betts (better known to us as NNR_Alex), who got inspired by the computer game Metroid Prime. I undid his work and turned his art back into a game again.

You'll be looking at your own hand through the X-ray visor. Literally a knuckle cracking map!

Description:
This map is based on the painting 'X-Ray Visor' by NNR_Alex, who is not only an artist, but also a very persistent player of my CW maps.

Creating his work he was inspired by the computer game Metroid Prime. Main character Samus Aran can use this visor upgrade to spot invisible enemies, areas and items. It also allows her to see through human flesh, thus showing the skeleton of her hand when she lifts her arm.

Every 2 minutes (starting after 10 seconds) the visor will need to recharge. This will temporarily blur your vision, which can be prevented by using the appropriate equipment.

Your weaponry is currently not available however. Like in many computer games you start with an empty inventory. Besides fighting skills you'll also need some puzzle skills to gather all of it and activate the rift.

Title:
Hard Art 6: The Screams
Difficulty:
Hard
Creeper type:
Land only
Remarks:
You will probably need every type of unit to stop these screams; a mirrored version of the famous painting The Scream by Edvard Munch.

Although you'll find some details about the emitters in the opening text don't expect to beat this map on your first try.

Description:
This map is based on a mirrored version of the famous painting The Scream by Edvard Munch. He probably created this work after observing a blood red sky due to the 1883 eruption of the Krakatoa volcano when overlooking the Oslo-fjord.

The emitters are located underneath each totem and will increase in frequency at 3, 6, 9 and 12 minutes of playing time (their intensity of 5 will stay the same).

The emitters near the water will start after 30 seconds and the two bottom ones after 1 minute.

After 6 minutes the person on the left will scream very loud and both people will keep responding to each others screams every minute.

Hard Art 7: Blue Studies
Difficulty:

Creeper type:

Remarks:
Blue + yellow = green when mixing paint. Can you do that? You'll start off with quite some blue, but the amount of yellow will increase during the first 10 minutes, so make sure you've got your defences up in time! Emitters can be capped by 3 blasters, although one of them can't be capped forever...

Description:
Kandinsky was like Mondiaan one of the pioneers of modern art and compared colours with music.

I wasn't able to use the original colours (see map comments) and keep this map playable, so I transferred it into shades of blue and made the map more interesting by playing with the emitter frequencies; between minute 2 and 10 these will increase gradually.

Make sure you get your defences up quickly and use your limited space as efficient as possible!

Description:
This is my second map based on a work by Miss Melissa, who also is a very good CW player.

Fight you way through the moons and intersections of lines to reach the totems. All emitters (of intensity 5) can be capped by just one blaster and will increase their frequency after 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 minutes.

Title:
Hard Art 9: Firebirds
Difficulty:
Expert Only
Creeper type:
Land only
Remarks:
Up for a real challenge? Good, because you'll need some stamina for this one.

Last map in the Hard Art series and about as tough as the first one. Strategical choices will be more important however and bad decisions will be punished severely. See the opening text and comments for some tips.

Description:
This is the last map in the Hard Art series. It's a complete remake of Nice Job 22: The Artist (http://knucklecracker.com/forums/index.php?topic=3787) (which turned out a bit easier than I intended and could be finished within 10 minutes).

Changes include:
- Shifted the entire map 1 block to the left to make it perfectly symmetrical.
- Changed colors and added enhanced graphics (which will be the case for all of my future maps).
- Decreased the starting time of the delayed emitters; they now start after 9, 15 and 18 minutes of gameplay.
- Increased the intensity of all emitters slightly.
- Relocated all emitters one block to the left or right to make them less annoying. They now flood the adjacent higher elevations less during the first part of the game and are easier to cap (without your blasters getting damaged).
- Removed the two pre-built structures.
- Added three more upgrades and changed their location.

The main difference in gameplay is that you will need to cap most emitters to be able to finish the map. One blaster is still enough for each of them, but only when this blaster doesn't get distracted by nearby creeper. If you don't take this into account before the first increase at the 9 minute mark your entire network may collapse.

Don't focus on blasters too soon however; your primary defence should consist out of mortars that you may have to send on a bombing run to clear some terrain. Make sure you plan the layout of your network well, so you'll have some space left to add blasters later on. Your choice of weapons and their placement will be crucial!

When you find this map is too hard, you may want to play Nice Job 22: The Artist (http://knucklecracker.com/forums/index.php?topic=3787). The comments for that map also contain a lot of hints that can be applied to this one. You might need them, because this is going to be a rough ride. I sure hope you're up for a challenge!

No need to tell more about M.C. Escher I guess, as you've probably already read enough about him when playing some of my other maps. He's my favorite artist!

Well, I hope you enjoyed playing my hard art maps. Starting next week it's time for something completely new....

Thanks for missing them Spiff. :)

I have a new one ready (only have to set a score for it), but I've been rather busy playing the Chronom maps for the tournaments (http://knucklecracker.com/forums/index.php?topic=4621.0) lately. Because many people participate I figured custom maps would be played a little less for the time being. I might upload it tonight though.

Edit: it's not gonna happen before Tuesday as I don't have time this weekend.

I have already done 3 works of him, but the next map (Hard Art 9: Firebirds, the last one of this series) will be a remake of a drawing by him: Nice Job 22: The Artist (http://knucklecracker.com/forums/index.php?topic=3787), that turned out a bit easier than expected. Which is rare by the way, as it is often the other way around. ;)

I love those endless stairs though! :)

Title: Quagmire Quest 1 - 4
Post by: UpperKEES on November 29, 2010, 03:26:21 PM
Title:
Quagmire Quest 1: The Golden Maze
Difficulty:
Expert Only
Creeper type:
Land & air
Remarks:
This is part 1 of the Quagmire Quest: a series of Expert Only maps that will all feature a combination of new game mechanics, tough battles and a puzzle element. Only suitable for all-rounders!

The Minotaur of this crazoniumless maze was replaced by the Creeper. And worse: you can only build SAMs!

Description:
The Quagmire Quest will lead you through various Creeper invested wetlands to the sacred grounds where your final task will await.

The golden maze gives and the golden maze takes. It will give you enough blasters to reach every corner, but it will take them back just as easily when you fail. Losing more than one blaster will probably mean the end of your mission, so save them quickly when something goes wrong.

Some advise:
- Deep is deeper; high is higher.
- Too far or too close; both are just as bad.
- Have a look at the map comments for more tips and don't hesitate to ask for one yourself.

Title:
Quagmire Quest 2: The Busted Bunker
Difficulty:
Expert Only
Creeper type:
Land only
Remarks:
Today you'll need some special purpose ammunition to be able to bust a heavily armored bunker. First however, you have to obtain the weapons to fire this ammo.

This map requires both thinking and fighting. A hard puzzle that allows you to use the game mechanics to your advantage in an unusual way. The sequence in which you execute your plan will determine whether you fail or succeed. Time is not important; it's all about escaping alive!

Description:
You just entered a military domain, currently occupied by the Creeper. The totems and available weapons are heavily guarded. Will it be possible to get out of here?

There's one bright side however: the two only survivors were able to lock themselves out with 4 techs and 2 blasters. Get these and you may be able to survive.

Unfortunately the bunker is made of plate steel and massive concrete, so you'll need a kind of ammunition that is able to penetrate through the walls.

Some advise:
- You can only blow the bunker when you don't blow your upgrades.
- Sometimes you have to be fast; sometimes you have to be patient.
- You may have to build something to break it down later on....
- You only have 8 weapons; lose one of them and you're stuck forever!
- This map is not about setting the best time; it's about being able to solve it.
- Have a look at the map comments for more tips and don't hesitate to ask for one yourself. I would appreciate it when you don't post hints and clues for this map yourself however! This is intended to be a hard puzzle that you probably won't solve on your first try. Spoilers will ruin the fun for others, so please demonstrate your intelligence by just posting your score. Thanks!

Title:
Quagmire Quest 3: The Dabbed Dam
Difficulty:
Expert Only
Creeper type:
Land & air
Remarks:
The dam is breaking and you are trapped at the banks of the lake.

Help is on its way however: friendly creeper is coming to your rescue!

CW2 game mechanics now available for CW1!

Description:
Today Odin City is trapped at the banks of a giant lake. It seems there aren't many places to go where you are save, so you'll have to work your way out of there.

On the other side of the dam the creeper levels rise fast. Every two and a half minutes an enormous gush of creeper will be flowing towards the dam, so it won't hold for ever. Small amounts of creeper already pass the dam where once water was used to generate electricity.

Unexpected help is on its way however! A rebellious bunch of spores has chosen your side and turned themselves into friendly dabs. These dabs will release super soaking creeper sponges. Each sponge is able to suck up a huge amount of creeper.

Although they are limited in numbers, they are very determined to help you out of here. They synchronized their flight schedule with the creeper eruptions to compensate for them:

8 friendly dabs will arrive after 2.5 minutes
6 friendly dabs will arrive after 5 minutes
4 friendly dabs will arrive after 7.5 minutes
2 friendly dabs will arrive after 10 minutes

There's just one drawback: the dabs have to be guided where to drop their sponges. This is why 8 beacons protect the dam. The beacons can withstand the creeper for quite a while, but after every gush 2 of them will break down.

I sure hope you will be able to use them to your advantage, because the dabs will definitely save you minutes of time!

Title:
Quagmire Quest 4: The Twin Gates
Difficulty:
Expert Only
Creeper type:
Land & air
Remarks:
Creeper attacking from two sides. Eight emitters to be capped. Only six blasters available. How are you going to handle that?

Description:
The true battle between good and evil begins!

Surrounded by evil creeper Odin City seems lost. There's no safe place, so it seems you can only defend yourself.

But how to defend yourself without the ability to build weapons? How to cap 8 emitters with only 6 blasters?

The answer is simple: rely on the friendly spores and use them to your advantage! They can not only hold back the evil creeper, but they are also capable of capping emitters for you! How? That's for you to find out....

Hundred friendly spores will arrive after:
- 10 seconds
- 3 minutes
- 2.5 minutes
- 2 minutes
- 1.5 minutes
- 1 minute (repeating)

Title: Quagmire Quest 5: The CERN Concern
Post by: UpperKEES on November 29, 2010, 03:26:57 PM
Title:
Quagmire Quest 5: The CERN Concern
Difficulty:
Expert Only
Creeper type:
Land
Remarks:
This rather hard puzzle map will require you to build CERN's Large Hadron Collider. You'll need this particle accelerator to be able to build the only super weapon capable of stopping the Creeper.

Many thanks to MadMag for creating the magnificent graphics!

Description:
The Creeper finally realized humans are a severe threat to its existence, so it decided to destroy our main research facility, because it brings us close to understanding the universe.... and the Creeper.

The CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research), located in the Swiss Alps, has built the LHC (Large Hadron Collider). With a length of 26.7 kilometer this particle accelerator is the largest machine in the world. A few facts:

- More than 10,000 tonnes of liquid nitrogen and helium are used to bring the temperature down to -271.3 degrees Celcius (1.9 K), making it colder than outer space.

- Trillions of protons race around the LHC accelerator in 2 directions, travelling at 99.9999991% of the speed of light.

- When 2 beams of protons collide, temperatures 100,000 times hotter than the heart of our Sun are generated.

The LHC experiments will hopefully answers questions like:
- What gives matter its mass?
- What is the invisible 96% of the universe made off?
- Why does nature prefer matter to antimatter?
- How did matter evolve from the first instants of the universe's existence?

Unfortunately the Creeper doesn't want us to use this useful research data against it and tries to prevent scientists from finishing the LHC.

The scientists in their turn have designed a super weapon, called Thor, but they need the LHC to be able to build it at the right moment. Can you help them out?

Please note this is a very hard puzzle map. When you can't figure it all out by yourself, have a look at the tips and hints in the map comments at the KnuckleCracker forums.

Also note that my other maps are easier and require more fighting. Good luck!

Thanks Koolvin! :)

But please note that you won't be able to finish the map with 'normal' gameplay (see the comments (http://knucklecracker.com/forums/index.php?topic=3953) for that). Better have a look in the map editor and study it a bit if you insist on finishing it.

I recommend to play some of my other maps though! They're much more interesting.

Well, as far as I know maps are also being approved during the weekend, so that shouldn't make a difference.

I still have to submit a score myself for QQ-4, so it will probably take another day, because I'm playing a few custom maps by others at the moment and still testing the basics for QQ-5 as well.

I'm not in a hurry however, as I've read that CW2 will take at least two more months to finish....

This will probably be my last map, as I have decided to leave the forums. I have a lot of things to take care of, so I won't have time to play CW or create maps any more.

I would like to thank all of you who:

- played my maps;
- created maps for me to play;
- participated in the tournament and quizzes;
- contributed to the forums;
- entertained me in chat.

I've had a very good time here and I really appreciate this community. Keep it up! :)

I have one unfinished map left (that already took me about 2 weeks of testing and fine tuning due to its complexity). Maybe I'll post it some day when I have a lot of time left, but I'm not sure yet.

The same goes for dropping by, because I really have to concentrate on some more important things now. No worries though; my maps will always be there to play.... ;)

Any further discussion of UpperKEES' leaving should be directed to this thread (http://knucklecracker.com/forums/index.php?topic=5679.0), or I will split it off.

Please keep the maps discussions on-topic and relevant to the specific map it pertains to.

I am not splitting the off-topic posts here, because to do so would add them in chronological order to the newer topic, and thus mess up that topic's flow.
