Yep, threw me for a while too.
That energy syphon is not only unneeded, but is actually detrimental to go for!

go top left. A single cannon keeps the creep tower suppressed, and taking it out not only eliminates ALL the spores, but gives you 3 PZ to play with.
I went for 2*reactor, and one sniper to keep the crawlies off

Went again, climbed on the elevated track to nullify the top nest early.
This allows more all 3 PZ to be reactor, which shaves another 10 min off the time needed.
