Title: Particle Fleet Demo Now Available!
Post by: knucracker on September 28, 2016, 10:56:00 AM
I don't have the website all updated yet with a main landing page for Particle Fleet.  But, that doesn't stop me from putting the demo up.
You can get it from the demo download page here:
http://knucklecracker.com/common/demo.php

In a few hours I'll tweet, blog, facebook this link.

If you download, please post back to let us know if the download was successful and whether the game could run on your system (and what system you were on).

There will not be a Steam version of the demo. While Steam permits demos, they do not encourage it (at least as I understand the situation).

Sounds like a corrupt download.   I'd grab it again and see if you get the same results.  There definitely shouldn't be a corrupt install.  I just tried it myself.
Which platform are you trying? (windows, linux, or osx).

What version are you trying to  download?  Can you re-try the download again? We can't recreate this.

I've started up the demo and I've been following the tutorial. The first mission (Naivety) takes a while to beat, and when you move on to the next mission (Indelible), it's easy to forget about how to place the HQ, because it's a separate button from the other units.

It would help if more of the tutorial missions pointed at the HQ button with an arrow, so new players don't forget about it and get lost.

Just for those who are following. We've tracked this issue to a permission problem on the user machine with writing to certain folders. OP resolved the issue by running as Admin. An updated version of the game will test for this situation and more gracefully exit while notifying the user of the problem.

Just to verify, did you change gatekeeper to allow the app to run?  Apple has continued along their march to get everyone to sign apps with their keys.
http://osxdaily.com/2016/09/27/allow-apps-from-anywhere-macos-gatekeeper/

Just wanted to double check this first.
(At some point in the next few months I'll jump through their hoops and get a key from them, in addition to the signing key I already have from a different certificate authority).

Sierra is really new and I've not tested on it yet.  I'll see what my system does later today (after it updates).  A hard crash like that usually means something between unity, the OS, and OS or permissions settings.  So things I'll be googling for relate to unity games crashing on sierra.

I right-clicked and clicked "Open", which allows me to bypass the MAS-only restriction.  The first two dumps may have been because of that I guess.

Edit: nope.  I alternate between the KERN_INVALID_ADDRESS and the EXC_I386_GPFLT error.

Hi.

I'm playing on Archlinux 64 bits and I have an issue on the first story mission, "Naivety". After the first dialogue from COO Amicus explaining how to jump in with the HQ, I don't get the rest of the tutorial and I can't complete the mission. I can build the energy mine and the omni and mire the land but I don't get the other dialogues, the lathe, etc. I don't know if I'm doing something wrong or if it's a bug. Is there a log file I should post?

OS X version 10.11.6, 2.5 GHz with 4 GIG of ram. Everything worked fine. I did notice a missing word and a misspelled word in the mission 5 conversation. I will try this again tonight at home on a windows 7 64bit system. So far it is awesome.

I just installed and played through the story demo on a Lenovo (Thinkpad) Yoga 14 with Windows 10 Pro 64-bit.  No major issues, but I did find a couple of tiny bugs.

1) The ship editor doesn't let you back to the main menu if you are in edit hull mode.  I'm guessing this is intentional, but it isn't clear.

2) When trying to build an Omni on mire it is immediately destroyed, but you get the notification 3 times.

3) The game doesn't appear to allow you to use a touchscreen to click on anything, nor does my Lenovo pen work to click within the game.  I don't know why anyone would want to play using these things, but I figured it was worth mentioning.

Overall great work and I look forward to playing the full version.

Take a look at the attached screen shot.  That should be the stage you are on.  Do you see the red arrow pointing to the cancel button and the "Press cancel" text at the top of the display?  My suspicion is you might not see that text and you don't notice the cancel button.  Perhaps that text isn't showing in the linux version...

I don't have the arrow or the text. I tried clicking the cancel button after building the mine and the omni, it didn't do anything.

None of the help shows. just the dualogue text.
It is the same in the preview version.
It shows normally when I ran the preview version on a 32 bit processor.
Just can't understand why the processor makes a difference, when I have the 32 bit version of Kubuntu installed.

Can you post a screenshot of what you see when the tutorial seems to stop?
Also, can you still interact with the game (move the ship around ,etc)?

It's a very odd error.  Seems to be at a very high level.  There's nothing strange in the log either.

I just tried it on a ubuntu 15.10 system (running in vmware with a hacked up opengl driver) and everything seems find (text, arrow, etc).  So I'm at a loss as to what would cause the tutorial to stop like that.  So, I'm looking for other issues that might give a hint.

Having played the demo from begin to end (prologue - 5 + the 2 extra missions), this game is as awesome as I had hoped (Although I could already tell from the videos posted by virgilw).

Also, karsten, why are you listed in the credits as bridge painter? I'm very curious as to the origins of that credit :P

What's the 2 extra missions?
Look at the Inception menu, next to Story. You can play two more missions there, which are much more involving than the first 5 campaign missions.

I doubt it will make a difference, but try downloading the demo again.  I just built the demo again off of the 1.0 source (mostly typo fixes).  If you had a corrupt version or something odd like that, grabbing it again would help.
http://knucklecracker.com/common/demo.php

Other than that, I'm at a loss.  No errors or exceptions in the log, and it looks like the mission started.
You might also click around on the other things on the main menu (the help, credits, etc) to see if there are any problems with those.

Unfortunately it's still the same thing with 1.0. The rest of the game seems fine, including the available inception missions.

Really.... those inception missions work but the first story mission doesn't.  That makes basically no sense :)

All I can figure is it has to do with the overlay text.  That is used in the first two story missions and never again I think.  It may be trying to use a system font - perhaps one that doesn't exist on your machine.  I would expect some error in the log, but who knows.  That is really the only thing unique about the story mission.  It also tries to show that overlay text right after the first conversation box is dismissed.

That overlay text should be "Arial".  See if you have that font on your system.

I do have that font. I tried renaming the font file with an uppercase letter since file names on Linux are case sensitive but it didn't change anything.

However, I tried the Windows version with Wine and the result was rather interesting. The tutorial is working and I'm able to progress through the mission but most of the interface text was missing (the buttons were still working). I've attached a screenshot but unfortunately I was unable to find the log file, it doesn't look like it was generated.

macOS Sierra here, and I've already played the first four levels. The game has worked flawlessly for me.

I'm using the trackpad, so I end up fighting it when I need to scroll, but other than that, I have no complaints. Great game as always! I can't wait for the full version to go on sale :D

Works on Debian Sid amd64, wirks on Ubuntu 15.10 running in VMWare...
Not on Kubuntu 14, not on Kubuntu 16, not on Archlinux...
OK, not that I know why it whould be on that level, but right now it looks like wither kernel or processor problem.
My processor is a dual core Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU B815 @ 1.60GHz .

I will try to set up some other systems running from an UB stick during the week.(DebianSid andUbuntu 15.10) If any of those should work we will have something to start looking at at least...

I cannot decide wether to play with creepified or discrete particles.
The option works - but i don't know which i prefer...   ;D

After binge playing through the demo i can say several things:
- Nice work Virgil!
- Everything worked fine for me so far, so good job done Virgil!
- Story missions make me want more
- To the Inception map maker: you little *insert favorite insult here* - you tricked me into a wrong strategy for a way too long amount of time  :D

System specs:
Win10 64bit
AMD 6100 and 16GB RAM
AMD 380 with 4GB and latest Radeon drivers

I Found a Minor Control Issue, when you have cancel set to right click you can't remove areas marked by rock burner. it just cancels the menu instead instead

I'd have to guess that this problem is unrelated to your previous one, as text showed up just fine there (on the UI at least)

I was able to smoothly play through all 7 missions of the demo on my win 7 x64 desktop PC. Some time on the weekend I will probably test the full release on my laptop and see if any issues pop up

I don't know if this is a bug or just a visual problem, but it seems like if you start a map with a custom fleet, save the game, abort and then reload the game from that save, when the game loads into mission boot screen, the high score options are weird. Example:

http://i.imgur.com/hXq3BbJ.png - As you can see, the only setting visible is "Default fleet", whereas my fleet is clearly custom (as can be seen on the thumbnail, or here http://imgur.com/l3kdv2C.png)

I tried to reproduce this on the other inception mission but that time I got both "Default" and "Custom".

I think it should only give you the option that you chose when you started the level. I'm also not sure if this selection affects post scoreboard.

I was able to play fine on my MacBook Air with Sierra, so I don't know why my iMac crashes on launch... one weird thing was that it brings up the loading screen but also throws up a "Validating" progress bar, which usually happens before an app loads (i.e. when you first download something from the net).

There's a weird issue when trying to play with the trackpad, you can't scroll with two fingers to aim the grabbers, it locks into "map drag" mode.  The only way I got out of it was to hit all of the control keys and cmd-Tab to another app to get out of that.

Windows runs fine.

Try fiddling with gatekeeper to allow the app to run.  Mac crashes are almost always related to some permissions problem (either write permissions to the file system, or app execute problems).

I try to re download it.
I get the error with syspolicyd
20:20:22.987394 +0200   syspolicyd   MacOS error: -67050
/usr/libexec/syspolicyd
/System/Library/Frameworks/Security.Framework/Versions/A/Security.

Get another error
AMFI: allowing exception handler for 'ParticleFleet' (2683) because the process is unsigned.

I'll continu to try to find a solution with the gatekeeper problem without disabling it.

Ok, made a Live USB stick with Debian 8 (amd64)
Demo works with help tects and arrows.
Now I just have to find out what the differences between Debian and Kubuntu are so Virgil have a chance to fix it.
Or at least tell people on which Linux system it works...
Due to an earlier message here I will make a run on Unbuntu 15 also.

/UncleBod
At least some success....
