that could be helpful, but it could also suck if yours mouse freezes up and you point it in the exact wrong direction.

Why would your mouse freeze? Anyway, it's a good habit to pause while adding, moving or adjusting units and it will solve any potential problem. :)

I know of quite a few places where the mouses' trackballs get stuck (halfway across the screen)

So here's something that might be really simple:
How about I just default the Maker to 4x production?

Grauniad

Nooooo.... We'd run out of ore that much faster.

when we're in the maker menu, can't you simply use keys 1, 2 and 4?  Or S(mall)/L(ow), M(edium) and H(igh)?

I use the maximum I can, which differs per map.

How about using '+' and '-' to increase/decrease the production?

and how about you start them active too, (it is annoying to have to set a lot of makers to 4x and arm them)

I like it this way (disarmed), as I like to keep my ore in store until I really need it.

The 'show FPS'-key would have to be reallocated, but that probably isn't a major issue (and not documented anyway).

U=1x
I=2x
O=4x
(These three are near the Pause button)

My suggestion would be one key to scroll through the intensities. This would keep other keys free for other shortcuts in the future.
