Title: A mission objective: BEAT ALL "Number" maps 1-1000~
Post by: Colin on August 03, 2011, 01:29:41 PM
UPDATE2:

I have adding another section on the third
post on this page! I like to call it the Trophy
selection but that might change if someone
can think of a better name.  ;)

UPDATE2 END.

UPDATE:

An announcement has been posted on page 10.

Things have really been slowing down in the code
maps section of the forums. However I will still be
checking on this thread regularly, and I will still be
answering PM's from those interested in helping
with this!  :)

UPDATE END.

Hello all, I'm starting a forum challenge for us all, if
you want to participate please post here or PM me.

Here is how this will work:

I am going to post sets of maps, from 1-1000~, now
I checked the code maps and some of these have been
beaten already but we will re-do them anyway!  :P
Because the main goal is to beat them all! It doesn't
matter if you're 'fast' or not, just if you beat them were
not going for record time or anything, just have fun.
Here is an example of how it will work:

~START OF EXAMPLE~

Note: when someone is asked to complete a map set,
they can set the complexity and size as desired.
Unless stated otherwise.

current map sets to be played:
map set1a = 1-4
map set1b = 5-9
map set1c = 10-14
map set1d = 15-20
map set1e = 21-25
ect...

... "x" contacts me:

"I'll do map set2"

... I edit my main post:

current map sets to be played:
map set1a = 1-5
map set1b = 6-10---(being done by"x")
map set1c = 10-14
map set1d = 15-19
map set1e = 20-25
ect...

... "x" contacts me and says maps complete,
... I edit my main post again

current map sets to be played:
map set1a = 1-5
map set1b = 6-10---(done by"x")
map set1c = 10-14
map set1d = 15-19
map set1e = 20-25

Additional Note: You MUST wait until I edit the main post
saying you're working on the map BEFORE you start playing
the maps, because it will get too confusing to keep track of
who has done what maps.  ;)

Additional Note2: I will be making the map sets different
sizes, so if someone wants to do 50 maps they can.  ;)

~END OF EXAMPLE~

Anyone interested in helping me beat 1-1000~ maps?  :P

I'll start this up on Friday if enough people are interested.
So contact me via pm or post if you're interested!

well, I just ran the numbers, and every forum member would have to play nine maps to get this done

Nine? hmm, can't count on EVERY member to
participate, but that would be awesome. MadMag
suggested I take the number down to 1000~. So
we will start with that for now, that would bring
the number down quite a bit!

Well if you can pick . . . wouldn't you do them all
on small/low? whats the fun in that?  :D

Quote from: Colin on August 03, 2011, 01:29:41 PM
Note: when someone is asked to complete a map set,
if the map is impossible on large/high (for them) you
may set the complexity or size down as desired.

Well... Maybe you can do them on medium/medium.
I'll have to think about this.

Well, I suppose the mission here is to BEAT the maps,
meaning you can play them on any complexity/size
you prefer.
Title: Re: A mission objective: BEAT ALL "Number" maps 1-1000~

So, play on small/low to speed things up, or large/high if you're kithros.

Post by: mthw2vc on August 04, 2011, 06:39:53 AM
Eh, this mission isn't terribly crazy if you get enough people... When Fisherck and I counted out all of the ore in each of what were then 4 map sizes for 50 maps, it took less than a day of actually working. If you can get 30 reasonably fast people working on them, even on large/high, it'd only take ~8 hours of work from each of them, plus perhaps a few more for any really difficult maps found. Of course, the problem is finding 30 reasonably fast people to work for you...

(If these 30 people were dedicated enough, you could "easily" reach your original goal of 1 through 10000 within a week.)

Post by: Colin on August 07, 2011, 02:50:30 PM
Well Ebon, everyone can play the maps on whatever
complexity/size they want, except for a few that I
have noted as you have to play them on large/high
or whatever. I would have liked them to all be done
on large/high but not everyone can beat all maps on
large/high like kithros, fisherick or any of the other
"Pro" players of CW2, and it would take about 40x
longer. Like it is were making very good progress and
everyone seems to be happy with that.  ;)

I had completed my set (S) - maps 186 to 195. Had done them all on large/high because I think it is most fun.

Maps were actually challenging and interesting (some of 10 not all). Especially 189 and 195 have extremely difficualt and tricky starts (encourage anyone interested to try them out on large/high). Few more required some LS dancing to avoid early drones etc.

I will pick another set later when I have time.

All you need to do for the maps is type in the number you want. For example, if you are doing map 671, type 671 into the code mission select.

Kind of off topic, but this is how I started 428 on small/high (or medium/high potentially - I think medium/high is a bit easier because of crystal placement though) - I don't think this one on small/high is possible without abusing the LS drone evasion quite significantly.

For the more interesting one this is how I would start it on large/high (this strategy should work even more easily on medium/medium I think where you don't need to worry about the creeper field):

From here I build shields as necessary to stall, and whenever the fields turn left and up I can rebuild the shields forward again. Build up reactor farm and such and it's pretty straightforward from there.

Ah! But did you try med/med?! The constant stream of drones and phantoms was a killer!

Actually, med/med was the only way I tried this level.

It was really interesting to see your screen-shots and I appreciate the effort you went to to bring them to us.

It was good to get someone else's take on how to tackle a problem. I'm kinda playing CW2 in a vacuum here - for all I know I'm the only player in the darn country so I'm kinda making it up as I go along!

428 was a good challenge after a stream of straight-forward code maps.

Hope you enjoyed it.

Oh, and we're probably not too far off topic - this pertains to the challenge Colin set!

Post by: Kithros on October 26, 2011, 07:39:34 AM
428 on large/high is pretty much a harder version of the medium/medium one - the build directions are worse (didn't realize that they were all direction until my position was already secure, there are no fields, the max drone count for the gateway was a lot higher and 10 phantoms instead of 4 - in medium/medium I just fly into the left emitter chamber, pick up the green gem, dig the LS in, and pick up the white gem just to build up faster. The creeper will pretty much never threaten the LS (or rather, you should be on the offensive long before that happens). Use shields to block the drones as necessary.

RE: 428 -
For Medium/Medium, I found it easier to take out the top right Emitter first and then work my way clock-wise...using the gravity to carry AC across the Creeper fields.

I do like that concept of hiding the LS in a cave though.

That's the way I did it - but I found it was a death match against the drones with limited resources and nowhere (safe) to build, and just as you're starting to make progress the phantoms show up!

I edited that comment to show they were finished, but will post a new comment if/when I get through this latest set.

"Long" is right!

Just for grins, start doing #552 on Large/Medium and tell me how long it takes to get the first Emitter.

Fun stuff.

Map set1R 401-410 has been completed.  I think I got them all uploaded (though some I had to tweek the settings away from medium/medium because my game play is woefully weak.

Next set?  I'll just take whatever is next in line...

Oh and, I did it by 1:45.  :)

I am definitely NOT one of the speed merchants around here, but drop the LC down as far as it will go - at the same time go after that green jewel.

At the 10 second mark, start building your Nullifier off-set to the right side of the Emitter.

You should just barely kill the Emitter at the 26 second mark.

If you have any objections I will change

I was stumped for the longest time.

I finally ran down and hid in the furthest lower-right position I could get the LS, then started drilling to build Reactors.
One Blaster will get you through the first wave or so of Drones. Long enough to build up your power - and don't forget your Phantom Coil.

DO NOT go for any of the Jewels/Gems - keep your terrain solid between you and all Creeper.

When you get your second Blaster - then second Phantom coil - built, you will be safe to keep drilling all the way down and letting the gravity work the AC.

Very impressive to think that this was auto-generated.

My reasoning for posting the announcement
is to clear up all of the maps penguin, if you
have indeed completed them I will list them
as done and this solves one more problem! ;)
It just seemed to me that a lot of the map
sets were sitting there as "work in progress".
However since I haven't heard from some
people in awhile I figured maybe they had
either forgotten or I had missed them posting
that they had completed the map sets. Keep
in mind that I actually do not go through and
check to see if everyone has indeed done
the map sets, because for every map there
are 9 "possibilities":

Small/low
Small/medium
Small/High
Medium/low
Medium/medium
Medium/high
Large/low
Large/medium
Large/high

For me to go through every map in the high
scores looking at (possibly) all 9 of them
would take a very long time, so I just trust
that everyone will do as they say they have
done.

Ummm...

At the time of writing, 54 and 55 (being done by thepenguin - I know that's the first thing you'll check! Sorry to drop you in it Pingu!) are not showing any posted scores on any size/complexity combination.

Just don't ask me how I know.

It's not like I'm a sad git who has nothing better to do than go through checking up on the first 1000 numbered code maps just to see if everyone has posted scores where they said they had...

;)

Actually, I was typing '549' in when I noticed a really cool looking map pop up when I got as far as '54' - give it a go!

I was so interested that I took a look at what scores had been posted and was surprised that there wasn't a single one.

It's obvious what we have to do now.

Get Virgil to make a search program to trawl through every number map up to 1000, checking every size/complexity combination and report back to us any that don't have scores posted. It won't take him more than 10 minutes.

;D

Any combination except small or low.

It's rather like several 'authored' maps I've seen.

I didn't post a score 'cos I didn't want to steal anyone's thunder.

Colin - I took a run at that one. Had to start by moving the LS far left, using a couple of Shields & Repulsars...then digging for gems.
That gave me plenty of time to build up some energy/weapons and start the long fight down to the bottom.
Let me know if it works for you.

Are you sure you mean 160? 160 on large/high will never have any drones reaching the surface (until you dig to them)...

It's not that hard, if you're on the far left side the creeper won't be threatening - build 4 shields to let the drones crash into, dig to the green gem ASAP and as soon as you have the green gem start building 2 blasters - for me the blasters finished just as the last shield died (if you need to just build 5 shields instead)

I remember one the maps I did was close to that (med/med actually) but my skill level didn't allow me to find a way to live, as the gems would open MORE pathways for the drones to get me. But never played a map with the gateway in the open like that.
