Title: Custom Map #1251: A Tragedy Forgotten Part 2
Post by: AutoPost on July 03, 2012, 11:01:04 PM
This topic is for discussion of map #1251: A Tragedy Forgotten Part 2 (http://knucklecracker.com/creeperworld2/viewmaps.php?mapid=1251)

Desc:
The second installment of my series. Sorry it took so long guys, the third one should be coming shortly. Warning: the map laggs a bit at the end, but it's well worth it. And make sure you read the text, it's a cool story, and there are a lot of helpful hints there. The map will be easier if you don't have to feel your way around in the dark. (it's a joke, you'll see why)

After a few minor setbacks, the time has arrived. The second map in the, "A Tragedy Forgotten" series. If you haven't played it already, try Part 1 (http://knucklecracker.com/creeperworld2/viewmaps.php?mapid=768) before playing this map. This map is a bit more difficult than the first, so just tread lightly. Don't let the vines intimidate you at the start, build lots of shields, save frequently, you'll do fine. Make sure to read, there's some helpful tips that can keep the map from biting you in the butt. Knowledge is power, and know that at 10 minutes, things get crazy. Save before then, if you figure out what's coming and figure out how to prepare it, it's pretty easy. Remember to use your anti creeper. For full enjoyment, mute the game and play this suggested soundtrack. (http://www.yourepeat.com/watch?v=d2hRTLdvdnk&feature=related)

PeterPower did the tile design, and designed the temple up top. He also made the epic dragon at the bottom. I did the field work and everything else. PeterPower kind of left halfway through this map, and I don't know where he is right now.  :'( But at least he's done a lot of stuff on the other maps. He did most of the design for Part 3 already, and Part 4 is layed out already, as is part 5. (with some epic creeper art already) :D So I think I can still make this work. The next map should not take quite so long. have fun everyone!

If you guys have questions about this map, ask away! I can almos guarantee you are not the only one with that question, and if I know what advice to give, it can help everyone. The map is difficult, I'll give you that. And more two times as many thumbs down as scores makes me uneasy. :P would anyone be willing to do a video of this map? I'd like to, but I don't do videos. I fail at them.

The surprise Creeper from nowhere is always a little disheartening.
I have good 'saves' I can go back to and build all the additional Shields, but will have to decide if I want to.

It was a very fun game up until that point. Clever start and fun working through the 'riddle' of the impossible by-pass.

I'm not doing one of your "rage quits" (love that phrase), but will take a break.

Ahh, I made sure to not do any teleporting creeper, but at 10 minutes stuff starts flying around. That's why I kept stressing, build shields everywhere! And beware the plant, but I figured people would be able to get that part easily enough. :P the only teleporting creeper appears when you should already be in the boss pit and prepared. I wonder if I stressed that enough. Lol. Everything up top is supposed to be destroyed, you have to build a system that can support you in the arena at the bottom before grabbing the beacon tech.

just one little hint:

it's possible to move the LS straight through the green snake to pick up the last holocube without killing much creeper or gateways.

Perfect, you have no idea how badly I need someone to bounce ideas off of for ATF3. I've been Inc at random people on chat. :P and you realize launchers help a lot with that boss battle, right? (PS. Terrania will likely be the third most difficult battle in this series)

Thanks for all the positive feedback you guys! With the amount of work that went into this map, I'm glad to know it was appreciated. Even if I wasn't clear on an ending detail... Lol. :D I'll cover that now. When you grab the beacon tech, the top of the map floods. I should have stressed that more, but I figured it wouldn't matter much since you have to be safe to grab the beacon, anyways. The creeper up top is to keep you from running from Terrania once you get him out. You must stay and fight, the coward's path is closed!

The side emitters teleport creeper into the center, so it's impossible to pass until they are destroyed.

though there is a way to get through without destroying them....  ;)

Spoiler
A: Anti creeper and B: shields up top? All anti creeper in that area is teleported to the top (where the big plant is at the start) right before the side emitters teleport creeper into that area to destroy all nullifiers.

Glad you liked it! And glad I left the boss battle how it is, I think it's a decent challenge for the average player. :P There will be much more elaborate battles to come, though. 2 boss battles that will be harder. And ATF3 won't have any kind of boss. And ATF5 is a credit map.  ;)

Glad you liked it Tricky! And I'll probably send you a message. I need ideas for ATF3. There's not a whole lot to do with it, but I want it to be held to the same high standards as the rest of the maps in the series. So I don't know. I'll think of something. I always think of something.  8)

Title: Re: Custom Map #1251: A Tragedy Forgotten Part 2
Post by: Ebon Heart on July 10, 2012, 09:06:41 AM
I'd say so. :P that's one of the few speed demon tricks in there. The teleporting creeper doesn't touch the dead center of that middle pit, so you can still nullify the gateway and dig the terrain out to get the LS through. That was one of the only intentional ones. If you're really good, a lot of the fighting up top isn't necessary, though the boss battle is a pain with drones attacking you from the top.

Just amazing.
Whoever is voting this map down is just not good enough to beat it.
...
...
Well, I also failed it. But i anyway think it is amazing :)
keep ATF going, i wanna see some more maps and some more TSFH-Soundtracks xD
Are you going to include the "Exodus", or "Strength of a Thousand Men" Tracks? Personally i like those two most.
Title: Re: Custom Map #1251: A Tragedy Forgotten Part 2
Post by: Ebon Heart on July 12, 2012, 10:27:23 AM
It's a matter of what fits the map. While I'd like to keep the epic atmosphere up, the series is going to get very morbid very quickly. Also, that's exactly what my thought the down votes were for. It's to be expected with any difficult map, really. Noobs don't understand the difference between a bad map and a map they can't beat on the first try. Don't expect this to effect the difficulty of the other maps, though. I can tell by the comments that the maps are still appreciated.

ebon your field work is amazing I got caught off guard a few times but In the end I didnt have much trouble with the final boss because I could just
Spoiler
nulify the gateways move the LS to the left of the dragon and go straight to the holocube with just enough time to collect it

the hardest part was the plant for me but that was just because I forgot to build a micro rift to keep the beacons lit.
looking forward to the next parts of the series

The third one should not be that bad. It's mostly going to be a story building map... with some cool field effects, of course. And possibly an interesting battle... I wouldn't really count it as a boss, though. The biggest challenge in ATF3 will likely be a time crunch. Survival pods to save.

lol, I had to tweak a few things I found in this map to turn them into some easy speed demon tricks. But the flying the LS down below the dragons thing was an accident... I still need to do a speed run of this map at some point. I've never been one for speed runs, even when I know (and placed) all the tricks. :P

ok, call me lazy, call me tired from a long day at the office, call me what you will - but I just want to flip the game on and blast a bit of creeper without strategizing for half an hour. I got exhausted just planning my initial approach!

Liked the first one though :)

Yes, this map isn't very much of a, "just blast the creeper" map. It requires a lot of excessive planning. Remember shields and repulsors!
Yes I'm back on the forums. Might even play some creeper world later this week, (one test to get out of the way tomorrow and I'm basically done for the week) and who knows, maybe even mess around with the map editor again. xD

Even if i have all of 3 KC games, I still continue to amuse myself with CW2  ;)

Maybe my old age, I'm 46, but I'm still loving this old school game, a superb one.

BTW, thanks a lot for first two episodes -  Impressive work!

Now waiting for 4th game on  sept, 30... I think it will be... WOW!!!!

Have a nice everything!

I'm glad to hear that some people still enjoy CW2. This game has always been my favorite. And it's amazing to me that people still haven't forgotten about this little project I did years ago. I mean, I was only 14 when this map dropped. O.o
If you want, I could potentially polish up the half completed rubble that is parts 3 and 4 of this series and try to give you something to play around with. :P part 3 was almost done but I just never got around to finishing the text and testing. Also it just looked bad compared to the other 2 so I didn't feel good about posting it.
Part 4 got delayed indefinitely due to technical issues, but I recently thought of a way to simplify it a lot. I doubt it will ever get done though.
Part 5 I straight up lost due to hard drive failure. I had the other maps backed up to my google drive but not this one.

Just played through both maps; am impressed, you do good work ^^
Shame it seems the story is stopped; would love to know what the rest of the story would have been, and/or see the WIP versions or 4 and 5 ^^

Regardless of whether you feel up to that, good job; got linked to your maps from a guide on advanced creeper field work, and your maps certainly demonstrate that :)
