I play with the keyboard, and my finger is always hovering near the 'p'...

Instead of using hotkeys to select buildings (to build) I simply hit 'p' and click them with my mouse. Take your time to complete maps, if I don't know what to do next I pause the game and think instead of letting the game run while slowly thinking about what to do next.
